New Cities Added To OAG Site

Sat Sep 23, 2006 1:24 am

Hello all....

Just in time for the weekend, another large city has been added to:

www.geocities.com/departing1983/index.html

The new addition is LAS for 1989.

In addition, GRB and SBN for 1979 have been added.
The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Southwest Airlines.

Hey 702ML, could you add TYS and MIA to your 1979 list, please? I know MIA might be a lot of work, but I really, really enjoy your site. As much as I love collecting timetables, your site (especially 1979 and 1983) has given me great insight into the legacy route structures at that time. I have a very keen interest in the route development of AA, BN, DL, TW, and UA in the late '70s-early '80s. I always wondered how many flights/cities TW and UA served from PIT in the late '70s. Now I have a much better idea. Keep up the great work!

I cannot believe that I missed MIA 1979 all this time! I thought I had hit all of the major cities from that year! I will get right on that, my friend!

Interesting site, but why not show return flights too - not just flights TO those cities?

First of all, thank you very much for doing this for us "Airline Geeks." I really enjoy looking at old OAG timetables. The oldest I have is from April 1988. Is there any chance you can post the service for RIC and possibly ORF in 1983? Thanks for all your help!

OAGs are always listed backwards from what system timetables list. OAGs have flights from other cities to the destination listed, while official airline timetables do it the other way (from-to). It's still better than trying to collect all the major airline timetables for the period, especially for 1979. I love the site personally.

Yes i know. I'm just saying that we're only seeing the schedules in one direction. Why not do a 'FROM' for each of the routes you show too. Itll give us the whole picture rather than just seeing it one-way. Afterall, its just a matter of turning to the appropriate page in the OAG right?

No offense intended!

Yes, I figured you were too. I just thank you for taking the time to do this. I sure wish OAG still printed their timetables. (At least I don't think they do.) I use to subsribe myself a few years ago before they stopped printing them. I loved the OAG magazine too. That always provided new air service updates for each particular region in the U.S.

Thanks for your awesome site. Its always fun to take a look at the past. I espically like the BDL listing.... tons of BDL-BOS/LGA/EWR/JFK flights, handfulls of tiny commuter lines plying northen new englnad... Shame those days are gone

Oh, Ps and can you look up to see if there was any scheduled service to BAF or CEF with the info you have on hand? I would really appreciate it. Im really curious as to CEF as its my home airport and inside the ga terminal there are checkin desks and scales.

I'm not home now so I can't check, but for at least a year or two in the 1980s CEF had a couple of scheduled flights-- to Atlantic City as I recall.

Quoting DILF (Reply 10):
Why not do a 'FROM' for each of the routes you show too.

What makes more sense, showing TO and FROM for each city, or just showing TO for twice as many cities? (More than that, actually, since the FROM takes much longer.)

I sure wish OAG still printed their timetables.

Who said they didn't? Go to eBay and search for "oag"-- there are lots of recent ones.

All i was able to find for sure was service from Westfield, MA in 1979:

Air East with Piper service to both Hartford Brainard Airport and Bradley International Airport.

I have added the service to the 1979 section.

Hope this helps!

Actually, ALL OAGs have always had the flights from the other cities to the destination listed....even in the Worldwide edition....Its never from what I was ever able to tell the other way around.....Even the ABC Travel guides did it the way OAG does it....

Unfortunately, looking up each destination is easy, but looking up all the reverse cities city by city is a definate pain in the hiney and prolly more work than N702ML would want to do....Itd be nice but hed ware out the OAGS and his fingers typing...LOL.....

You should see what airlines were flying and to where in my 1975 OAG.....North American Edition....

Some of the stranger things:

*Qantas 707-320 from HNL to MEX and on thru to Bermuda...then to LHR
*BOAC VC-10 HNL-LAX-JFK-LHR
*BOAC VC-10 LHR-Bermuda-MBJ etc....
*Air France Caravelles in the Caribbean..
*Air Canada Viscounts on a few routes.
*Eastern Provincial Herlads on a few choice flights.
*Delta 747s being used on many diverse routes
*National 747s being used on many starnge routes...
*TWA using CV 880 between ORD and EWR and DEN....
*Being able to fly on Delta DC9-30s from Portland, Maine and end up in Shreveport, La. on the same plane only 7 stops later....
*Flying from CVG to DCA on a Piedmont FH-227 or YS-11 making 5-8 stopes enroute.
*Delta DC8-50s flying on routes from DTW to CLE or CVG.
*Delta DC9-30s service between ORD-STL ORD-LIT ORD-ICT....odd things like that
*American Airlines DC10s from ORD-BUF
United DC10s and 747s from ORD to/from BOS, BDL, BAL(Now BWI), IAD,
PHX, LAS, DTW, etc....

Lots of goodies in that issue....I would love to get a copy of an older OAG perhaps late 1960s like 1968 or 69....
