Quote:
Move in more comfort and style
From January 2007, Cathay Pacific will be phasing in luxurious new seat designs, fresh cabin interiors and enhanced inflight entertainment options that will revolutionise long-haul travel.

We have worked with leading transportation design consultants to create an environment that is natural, soothing and exceptionally well appointed. Inspired by the textures of timber, bamboo, stone and water, our new opulent surroundings are supported by the latest materials and cutting-edge technology.

Our aim is to create a level of quality and attention to detail that will exceed your expectations, no matter which travel class you are flying.

Interesting to see CX's new long haul products. The new First class seats (or beds) are just remarkable! The business seats looks like one of those used by VS/AC/NZ though. Economy was a total surprise and I wonder how comfortable would these fixed economy seats would be (and wonder what the seat pitch would be after recline).

Not surprising they went for the same style seats as VS/NZ/AC...however the First Class seat looks really cramped!

The Economy seats look comfy, however...makes sense that they slide forward and at an angle in place of the physical seatback recline.

Business seems like Virgin's Upper Class. I can't wait to see the configuration on the 744.

Very impressive! I think the Y seats are the most innovative; hopefully more airlines will opt for this new kind of seat in the future.

Those Y class seats look excellent and mean that there should be no more limited recline seats on CX. Further, the AC style Business seats look like the best combination of a real lie flat and level seat but still save space.

I have been waiting for this for a long time.... impressive....

Notice that the new Y class is called 'Economic' class rather than 'Economy' class..... I wonder what's the story behind it?

The Business class seats seems to be the 'Solar' model from Contour Premium Aircraft seating, same as the already announced new Air Canada Business class. So in that sense its not really innovative... just an iteration from an existing product.

I am really surprised that they chose the new B/E Aerospace seat for economy class though.... CX has always been moderately up to date in cabin product, but not THAT pioneering... I look forward to trying out those new seats.

Just for your information though- the reason why a 3 point harness is used is not 'to give more stability during take off and landing', rather, its a safety requirement due to the unique fixed shell and configuration. for the Virgin upper class, they didn't use 3 point harness becuase they opted for the airbag instead.

I think that's a typo. Just look at the next page on the website and they call it 'economy' again.

I'm flying them in march (AMS-HK-AMS) Will they have the new eco seats by then on the a343's?

lol, yeah, I totally laughed at the whole "stability" thing...I was like, "urm...it's better in case there is a sudden impact..."

I thought it was interesting that the seat-belt design is actually based off bizjets. This must be the first major air crarrier to do this on their widebody A/C...exciting for safety!

This also means that everyone now needs to adopt a different brace position...instead of leaning over, pax must now sit up, put their chin to chest, and sit on their hands, underneath their thighs (palm facing up).

5 years ago? Well at least 3 but this is a vast improvement. The current seats have a 180 degree recline but it's not flat. One thing I hope for in the new Business is that a trolley can fit down the aisle. The problem with NZ is that they can't fit so the flight attendants have to carry it one by one.

Will the A343s be refitted? I doubt it.. Hoping for a 77W on the AKL-HKG route!

I definitely like the new seats. And they have an AC power source!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I wonder how comfy Y class will be if you're anything over 5 foot 8...

If seat pitch is kept at 32 inch, and the seat slides under u rather than recline, doesn't that simply reduce leg room even further???

hhhmmm - im not convinced, but will have to wait til it's released i suppose.

Audio Video on Demand in Economy class, that's a major improvement, plus an improved 9 inch moniter.

However, the 2 features that I am looking forward to the most is the personal closet in First Class (just for the fun of it) and the fully flat bed in Business  Wink

Oxygen > I agree about the business class possible manufacturer and also about the fact the economy looks like a B/E product.

Do you have any feeling about who the F/C seat manufacturer could be? To me it could still be a Contour product (see some similarities with recently presented prototypes in Hamburg).

6th freedom > I would imagine that between two seats (one with reclining back and one with fixed shell and moving seat pan+back) , if pitch is the same, and the seat is free to move only in the length direction, then there should be no difference between the two different systems in terms of gained space (provided both have literature pocket placed in the same location).

What do you people think?

I would say the gained space comes more from a thinner backrest & new position of the literature pocket.
As a plus point, the tray table and TV screen will be less affected by front seat movements due to fixed shell.

Glad to see this and hope it works well for CX, venerable amongst the best!

However, to note that I was recently twice F BKK HKG JFK and KUL HKG JFK and very, very disappointed for the $$$. Seats on both A/C were worn and dirty, cabins were tired, lavs had minimal amenities. Meal service was adequate but not outstanding- 2nd trip HKG JFK attendant kept getting everyone's orders confused, never handed out kits, had to ask twice. CX World AVOD system was not fully operational....(heard the purser complain that they had written up the same A/C week before and nothing had been done about it!!!..... boarding in HKG was a cattle call...F/C pax mixed with econ to form LONG LONG LINES...never expected this from CX.

By the way the VS J class seats are terrible....feel like a damn casket....and not much for facing sideways for T/O and T/D. Several colleagues spoke the same.....lots of plastic and very hard cushions..on VS.

SQ is still tops...say what you may, but they just get it right, everytime.

Cheers!  twocents   airplane

The story is that the person who typed the page up confused the world Economy and Economic.  Smile Anyway, it has been corrected back to Economy.

The new product is very impressive. And CX has taken a more revolutionary and innovative route which I have seldom seen for the past ten to fifteen years. In the past they tended to follow other airlines.

Oh so 'Ecomonic' Class is just a typo..... hoped there would be something interesting happening. Hahaha, anyways....

MarkHKG: oh yeah, I haven't thought about they needed a different bracing position. So that implies a new safety video and safety cards coming too.

Ikarus2006: I couldn't tell from the pictures which manufacturer made the First class... I seem to find characteristics of different companies- However, based on the rumors I have heard for a long time (for like 2 years), its probably B/E Aerospace. What I got from the rumors is that B/E is the supplier to all new cabin products, so I am surprised when it turned out that they are using Solar. Moreover, last year at the Hong Kong Aircraft Interior Expo, I happened to stand near some B/E guy, and he was explaining to other people that since all their new products are with CX and are confidential, they have nothing new to put in the booth, and so they'd rather not have a booth at all. The economy class seat has already been published in the Aircraft Interiors International already at that time, so I guess the confidential product he talked about should be the F/C.

Anyway, that's just my guess.... need to get confirmation

Very interesting the 3 point seat belts, extra safety concern by the airline is always good, but I wonder if regular passenger would use it as a 3 point seat belt or as a regular one.

Also, the extra stowage space for carry-on baggage is a nice improvement it it does not come along a restriction for check baggage.

I thought CX's newer seats that are currently installed to be the best found in economy anywhere. Goes to show what a classy airline they are in that they strive to improve something that is already a great product. I love that airline and have been flying them exclusively across the Pacific for the past few months. Can't wait to try out the new seats starting next year.

I would imagine most pax would use just the lap belt except for critical phases of flight (takeoff and landing)...the cabin crew would probably insist that passengers wear the shoulder belt in those cases...I couldn't imagine trying to sleep in a 3-point belt.  Smile

Anyone know who's making the economy class seats? I don't think its Contour.

If I'm reading this right, the new CX business class seat is not flat -- even at an incline. I'll stick with SQ, thank you. At least SQ have inclined flat seats on their long-haul business class, as everyone but CX seem to be adopting. I haven't seen the new SQ business class seats though which should be unveiled soon with EIS of the B777-300ER.

Actually, personally, when I am in a car, I feel strange and uncomfortable when NOT having a 3 point harness.... so perhaps those new seatbelts would be even better for me !

MarkHKG: You are right, the economy class seats are not from Contour- contour basically only make first and business class seats, hence its full name 'Coutour Premium Aircraft Seating' The economy class seats are from B/E Aerospace.

Zvezda: In fact, the new CX business class seat can be turned into a fully flat bed, as described in the website:

'''The new luxury seat transforms into a 6-foot 6-inch fully-flat bed for a more restful sleep on long-haul flights''''

You are reading it completely wrong. It is the same seat as AC just adopted and BA is likely to adopt for their new Club World and is both flat and level.

Wrong again. The Spacebed style, Flat but not level seat is no longer at the forefront. VS and NZ have their new seat which is just a hair below a First Class pod and allows for a double bed in the middle of the cabin while AC and CX are using a space saving, but still ultra-lux and fully flat bed.

Zvezda was correct. The original CX press release about the J class seat said a "lie flat bed". CX has since corrected their press release to say "fully flat bed. When I read "lie-flat" yesterday, I too was shocked that CX would stick with "lie flat" beds. Thankfully, it was only a typo on the part of CX.

Hi well i have to say i do like the new first class offering ..It seems to be very good especially with its own wardrobe..

Business class just seems to be another similar take on VS/NZ

Economy looks very good the only thing i dont like is where the magazine pocket is . To me who likes to put a book and all in it and a bottle of water it will be in the worst possible position to grab with ease..

well i will say that its great that they are regoing their products... I will have to try them going to NZ!

one thing is that I hope they use a different seat color for First class. The color right now looks old (i guess thats the right word). the grey just looks drab and not like a new first class seat should.
I'm looking forward to the new seats!

Having flown business class on CX in the past (AKL-HKG, HKG-LAX), I am really impressed that this airline is already reinvesting in their premium product (well, economy too). What a great airline, I loved their product and service in this class and found it more enjoyable than QF first class (LAX-AKL) because of their attentive cabin crew.

It's a shame but, I don't think I'll get to work on a job out of Hong Kong for a while so probably won't experience it any time soon.

The first aircraft to feature the new cabin will be B-HKJ, an ex-SQ aircraft which has recently served with El Al. The aircraft has already been ferried to Xiamen for overhaul and preparation for CX service. Looking forward to seeing the seats!

I am afraid I do not know. CX will not plan or actively advertise the new product until they have enough aircraft in the new configuration. This will happen in 2008 sometime. They do not want to market the product until there is a fairly good chance that a passenger will experience it...otherwise there will be a lot of disappointed passengers.

Does anyone have better pictures of the B/E Aerospace seat or a link to a website with other pics of the line of seats? It's hard to see it in the Cathay pictures.

Very innovative.

Most airlines trot out new First and Business Class products, but don't give a damn about the majority of their passengers - those in the back. Looks like Cathay has changed that trend.

Very nice...I don't see why anyone would shell out for First at this point though, except for those with ridiculous amounts of money and/or miles. The J seat offers everything the F seat does, with a little less space, and probably less personalized service...but you're not getting SO much more as to justify the exponential leap in price. I guess I'm too practical in this sense.

Also, I am excited to see someone finally using a truly invoative Y seat design. We really haven't seen that in a very long time now. Any word on what the pitch will be for Y? Does this seat design require more pitch to work, or less, or does it just slot into existing seat plans?

Cathay is paying more attention to the little details... for example you can now widen your seat in business, and the adjustments made in economy so that there is back support, AVOD ect. Great job, can't wait till they come out in 2007 (I'm taking a flight with CX Dec. 2005, so it's a pity I can't experience the new fleet  Sad)

Isn't it amazing that we are seeing likes of cathay go to second generation 'lie flat type' seats (regardless of 180 Degrees or sloper) yet our friends with November registered aircraft haven't even got to the first generation yet?

...and making several hundred million a year in profits is helped tremendously by not having to offer "domestic" service or compete with a large array of domestic competitors!

The interesting thing is that this concept of fixed back, sliding cushion in economy class is not new, despite what they claim.

In the mid-60s, Aerotherm (a predecessor company to B/E Aerospace) offered the 'Zephyr II' seat, which was billed as having 'controlled living space' in the brochures (that's the phrase they're using now as well).

Ozark, Mohawk and National (Miami) used these seats. Aloha had them in their 1-11s. There may have been others. I can't find a pic handy but there may be one on the web somewhere.
