The King Who Lost His Throne And Became A Pilot

Sat Sep 23, 2006 4:24 am

A brief overlook of history regarding King Michael I of Romania…

He was the son of Crown Prince Carol and Princess Elena and the grandson of then reigning King Ferdinand I of the Romanians.

He was ousted by the communists and sent into exile in Britain and eventually settled in Switzerland. Because of financial problems he was forced to take “a job” and ended up becoming a commercial pilot.

Does anyone know what companies he worked for and what airplanes he flew? It’s not every day that a king would end up on the flight-deck trying to earn a living. I wonder what his crew thought of that… flying with a monarch.

What are your thoughts on this?

An article about this...

It'd be cool if he had flown for Monarch Airlines - they could brag about having a real monarch in the cockpit! Big grin

There's a book "Ploesti" by James Dugan,it is about the low-level bombing raid on the oil facilities,King Michael was a teen at the time and befriended many of the downed pilots, they shared a common interest in airplanes, fast cars and guns,it's a pretty good read.

All goes to show, if you have to slum it, you might as well do it right: fly for a living.  Big grin
