Tornadic Thunderstorm Headed Towards ORD

Sat Sep 23, 2006 7:28 am

According to WSI and the National Weather Service, a tornado was nearly right on top of ORD at 1715 today. Apparently the storm became tornadic near Schaumburg and moved to Elk Grove Village. ORD is currently in a ground stop. Any word from Chicago area a.netters about the status by the airport?

As of 18:38 EDT traffic is experiencing Gate Hold and Taxi delays between 16 minutes and 30 minutes in length and increasing. Also, arrival traffic is experiencing airborne delays of 15 minutes or less. Due to WEATHER/WIND and WEATHER/TSTMS, there is a TMP in effect for traffic arriving ORD. Some arriving flights are being delayed an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes.

I am 80 miles away from ORD in Rockford and it is perfectly sunny here, so I'd expect diversions normally, but there is an airshow and the airport is shutdown because of the Air Force Thunderbirds are practicing. So diversions won't come here.

There are some really nasty storms though. Chicagoland is getting smashed. Tornado watches are active for pretty much the rest of the day.

Fortunately the storms have passed ORD for the most part. It should just clear up, but United's operations for the rest of the day are going to be horrible. Average departure delays are just 45 minutes, but arrival delays are 4hrs 40min.

A report from here on the ground... we had some really fierce storms, especially for September. Some parts of the city got more than 10 inches of rain, and there was tornadic activity in several areas, including the downtown Loop.

It's cleared up, but I don't even want to think what ORD and MDW must be like right now.

The weather was not fun tonight. I was in heavy traffic in the Buffalo Grove area on Rt 83 and I heard the tornado warning sirens going off, at first I thought it was a sound effect from a radio commercial. Looking around, I had no where to go if there was a tornado in the area. I've worked in the area for 4 years and that was the first time I heard them go off.

You AA and UA people should just admit it. You created this storm so B6 would stay away from your airport. As far as anyone can tell, it worked.

By the way, what is UA 8120. The number seems to say charter flight, but it operates everyday.

Carbondale is nowhere near the Chicago area, that is more near the St. Louis area. However, my dad lives near EVV, and he said that they also got some strong storms down there, so maybe Carbondale got some as well?

The automatic doors of T3 in front of Delta was being blown open with windy rain coming in. I have never seen anything like that before. It became so dark out there. I'm sure glad Iberia got out in time because you know weather and ORD. AA's board just started turing yellow with delays and cancellations.

Then I get home and there wasn't so much as a stain on the road!

I have never heard the sirens go off lol. I spoke with my high school band director while I was on the Kennedy heading home and thats when I found out about the sirens going off. That was pretty odd for September in Chicago in my young memory. I hope the doors in T3 didnt break since the winds were just blowing them open like nothing. I wonder what ORD looked like from up above then? Very dark with storm clouds and all the lights from the runways, Terminals, and Aircraft still on the Tarmac!

Thats the first time I've heard the sirens in the city, I didn't even know we had them, luckily all passed with what seems to be minor damage, up here by Wrigley it was just about 20 mins of heavy rain then the flights came right back on the 27 L/R approach.

I am still waiting for my best friend to arrive from MIA, he is on final. I was amazed that AA waited so long to let them take off, one look at the radar and it was easy to see that the storm would be over as quickly as it came. There must be a ton of planes backed up.

My brother who lives in Wilmette said that there was 18" of water on the streets and several trees crushed cars on his block alone! I live in Chicago, we barely got a sprinkle.

Yea im on the south side of the City and my folks said it really didn't do anything. I'm glad it was over by the time I got back to my car. Before the storm hit I was sitting at the end of concourse L watching all the International, AA, and UA heavies arriving into T5 when Delta came on and said "The tower cancelled the flight do to weather going in that direction". I was thinking "what weather"? I sure got my answer less than an Hour later!

I'm on the north side of the city, it got very very very dark and then it started pouring. I heard the sirens go off but didnt think much of it. Apparently at work in Niles, IL, you could see a funnel cloud trying to birth itself but thankfully it never happened. I didnt see a tornado go over my part of town but tonnes of small hail and just heavy heavy rain. In all we got 1.30 inches of rain. I heard tomorrow is supposed to be worse?

holy mackerel...what a storm that was. and i was at ORD from 4pm to 9pm trying to get to Atlanta.

ORD is built on one gigantic slab of concrete..there is no basement to retreat to. some (a few...just a few) people were getting ancy about 530pm. it rained, blew and a fog rolled in that left you with about 10 feet (literally) of visibility. i mean we deal with this on a regular basis in the midwest, but it's not common for weather that severe to reach quite this far north.

Yersterday evening at 1720 I was driving around the ramp at CVG and noticed a UAL 733 waiting by the fire house across the field. I figured it was due to something in ORD as it usually is it was WX. Well a half hour later, I saw that same UAL 733 sitting there, same spot. A half hour after that it was still there, the last time I was on the ramp and saw it was 2015. I would have been fine with it, I love planes. But I'm sure that had to be horrible for some of the pax.

Well ORD got it bad yesterday and work was not fun at all, However DFW is getting it right now and there are some impressive holding stacks forming. Not close by any means of what ORD saw! But just day two of messing up AA/AE's main hub operations and more fun for passengers trying to recover from yesterday in ORD.

Seeing all the diversions to MKE was awesome. I lost count but I know there was a scandinavian A340, United 777, American 757, America West 757, A300...I was kind of busy unloading our A300 so I lost count. But it was awesome. The terminals quickly ran out of room or couldn't fit the wide bodies so they were all lined up by the cargo area. It was one of those days I wish i had a camera. But It was cool because i got to stop what I was doing at work and watch the 777 takeoff.

and the monitors read ATCDELAY, or CANCEL on just about every flight listed for NWA and CO
I finally made it onto the 6 pm flight that left around 10 pm, and today im in the process of trying to locate my lost baggage.

Good job RoseFlyer,

222249Z: 22nd day of the month at 22:49 Zulu (ORD is Zulu+6)

Just a minor correction, Ord is Zulu-6 - but since daylight savings time is in effect it is currently -5. So that METAR was at 22:49 - 5 or 17:49 - for most Chicago residents, 5:49PM CDT

I watched the heavy squall line pass through downtown, very dark and threating, but no tornado luckily.

I flew DCA-ORD on UA yesterday morning. We were due to arrive at 7:50AM. However, at that time there were already weather problems. We were in a holding pattern for quite some time. We were on the verge of diverting to South Bend or Ft. Wayne when the captain got persmission to proceed to ORD.

Based on several recent trips with ORD weather delays, I decided to rent a car and drive from ORD-BMI. I made that decision a few weeks ago when I bought my ticket. If not it is entirely possible that I would still be at ORD , 24 hours alter, with the masses waiting to get out of ORD. Been there and done too many times to do it again.

Strangely that was the second flight, in a row, where we were seconds away from diverting when we got the go ahead to go to back to the original airport. Two weeks ago UA ABQ-IAD was diverting to BWI due to thunderstorms when we got the ok to proceed to IAD.

Just to weigh in....especially being like a day late, I was there the entire time. The rain was coming down so hard that I could not see the planes that were parked a the gate. Half the flights cancelled and the other half were delayed as mentioned above. The CS lines were a mile long and yet, every one was (for the most part) calm.

I was there with a bunch of TVC people and their flight was cancelled about 20 or so prior to the flight. Their gate was at the F11 downstairs part and people were playing cards in the stairwell, some were sleeping there as well...lol. But it gave me a flashback to 1999 when I was stuck with the 'rents in the C concourse in CVG. That was a nightmare.
