Jets With Exceptional Takeoff And Landing Ability

Sat Jul 01, 2000 11:42 am

Aside from the BAe146 (Avro RJ), what other jet aircraft have great takeoff and landing ability, from strips as short as LCY?

Thanks!

A 757 at London city, I'd pay five bucks to see that!!!

Actually as regional jets go only the Avro/BAe has any short field ability. The other RJs use a much runway as a typical mid-sized jet.

The Dornier 328 Jet has a good takeoff capability as well as the MD-80.

I think for everything I have seen, Bombadier's Global Express ( I have some pictures posted of it here, look under my user name) can get off in less than 2000 feet and land in less than 4000 feet fully loaded. The Gross on it is 99,000 lbs. 49,000 lbs of that is fuel. ( thats as much as a 757)

The Global Express is one of the best for it's size I think. I could use runway 24L at Montreal St-Hubert which is only 4000feet long. I remember reading something about it departing from an airport with a runway of 3000 feet. It has very wide wings which creat great lift. For more info on Montreal St-Hubert Airport go to http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/shangrila/cannes/66/st-hubert.html

The most impressive Take-off (and indeed landings) I have ever seen are those of the Boeing/MDC C-17. That baby can really take off!

Fully loaded (huge MTOW!) with full fuel and can take off in 1,500 or 2,000 feet - and can land in a lot less. One reason is that the Reversers deploy before touchdown (or so I could perceive.)

I saw it at Farnborough a couple of years ago. And boy those things are real quiet too! They really are whisper-liners.

757 holds 75,400lbs fuel

Taken from Boeing's webpage:

"During normal testing, C-17s set 22 world records, including payload to altitude time-to-climb and the short takeoff and landing mark, in which the C-17 took off in less than 1,400 feet, carried a payload of 44,000 pounds to altitude, and landed in less than 1,400 feet."

Impressive...

UPS 757 at PVD was off the ground after about 2500 ft where as the airborne ex DC-9 that followed needed the whole runway (7000ft)

Yes, the C-17 is amazing! Even more so considering it is in the same weight catagory as the DC-10 and 767-400!
