Delta MSY-LAX. Southwest Missed The Boat.

Sun Sep 24, 2006 2:16 am

I applaud DL for starting MSY-LAX in December. Of course DL flew the route for years, usually with widebody L1011 and B767 equipment through the 80's and 90's. It was cancelled in 1997, operating as a daily B727 both ways.

Southwest has decided not to resume MSY-LAX for whatever reason, so it's nice to see DL pick up the slack and become the second carrier in the market.

I wonder if RDU-MSY will come back?

Maybe DL will expand further at MSY to fill the void that WN has created by not adding manty of they flights back again

Could DL Connection also be interested in SAT-MSY, which I think UA Express/Trans States are giving up

If Southwest was somehow precluded from again offering MSY-LAX non-stops just because Delta started them first, then I'd say your topic line was correct...

I'm sure that it's probably just a matter of priorities, and that we'll eventually have MSY-LAX non-stops again at some point.

The eastbound LAX-MSY schedule is kind of at a weird time with a 6:30pm departure with no real DL connecting possibilities, except maybe for some Asian flights by CA, SQ, MH, and BR arriving LAX at the 3-4pm timeframe. All the other LAX transcons are pretty much red-eyes (RDU, CMH, BDL, BOS, JAX, JFK, TPA, MCO) and will start to benefit soon from the SFO, LAS, OAK, SJC, and SMF feeds.

I hope so. And I do think it is a matter of priorities for WN...DEN is obviously more important to the airline than MSY is currently.

At least some of the majors here are picking up some of the slack.

I would like to see it...that route did very well...but I don't see that coming back for at least the next six months. That being said, I didn't think DL would add LAX-MSY again, so nothing really surprises me anymore.

Well good for your home port - but try a different thread title, my friend. Delta has missed the boat many times more than WN ever will. Last time I flew DL, I missed my connection.

Hey man! Well you know I was just talking about post-Katrina MSY flights...WN has been slacking....sure they have the most flights (not by that many) but the pace of the growth is painfully slow. Everyone here at the airport from the director down shares that viewpoint.

BTW, I am sad to say that the guest house you stayed at here probably won't reopen anytime soon. Remember that car ride?

I am not a Delta fan, so I don't really care that much. I am happy that United is planning on bringing back the second of their 3 dailies pre-storm and going back to Mainline.

The two Ted 320's go to two mainline 319's in December. An upgrade as far as i'm concerned. The market needs F class seats.

Why post about how you don't care? How useless. Just don't post in the thread then.

WN's main problem is aircraft, isn't it? They cannot get enough and during Katrina used those aircraft to start/increase service elsewhere, now making it impossible to replace in MSY until more aircraft are available.

A lot of us at MSY wonder what is up with WN's snail's-pace return. Our traffic is around 65% of its pre-Katrina levels and growing.....yet WN is running a total of only 23 daily flights...there were nearly 65 pre-Katrina.

Glad to see DL pick up some of the slack.....though I would agree with OPNLguy that WN will eventually return the LAX flight, and I would hope OAK and SAN would follow.

Just a question is the current population base big enough to support the full service that WN had before? Seems to me you need people and enough people with disposal income to be successful.

I'd say that the current population could support 45 flights a day on WN. Perhaps not 60 like they were running before Katrina, but certainly a lot more than the 24 that they are flying now. The metro population is still down from before the storm, but not by much. The big thing is the lack of tourism here still, which should change in the upcoming months with the return of the cruise ship industry.

I can only imagine it will happen sooner or later. They were filling their 1 A320 per day before the storm, lots of it with Asian connections. It was definately their worst performer, but 1 flight isn't hard to do.

Good for DL. Now if they could bring back LAS-MSY. That was a great flight for nonreving in the mid 90s. Used to leave LAS around 2 or 3am. Took it 3 times and always a B767 on the route.

This weekend marks a very important turning point in New Orleans Recovery.
The show and spectacle of Monday Night Football marks an extremely important event. The reopening of the Superdome. With this, a lot of companies and people will have booked hotels and rooms for the spectacle of the home games for the Saints, Tulane and high school foortball. . Another important result, is that New Orleans will now have a big part of their convention infrastructure returned. By the time Mardi Gras rolls around this year, things will be getting going. Tourists, businesses and conventions will start driving the rest of the rebuilding left to be done. The return of conventions and tourists is when you will see WN return much more strongly to MSY. I wouldn't be surprised to see them start the RDU flight.

Northwest flew the first post-Katrina flight into MSY.

It was an A320 operating MEM-MSY. Brought in something like 17 passengers if I remember correctly.

Having recently flown through MSY it's nice to hear that more service is comming back. It wasn't as deserted as I had expected but it was clear that traffic was way down (but the flights I was on were nearly full).

It was also cool to see the display case by the CO gate I flew out of full of Continental/TansTexas/Texas International artifacts rather than sweeping all that history under the carpet.

Quoting MSYtristar (Reply 21):

It may just be the people I met while I was down there (or the fact that I was in Lousiana for less than thirty hours) but it left the poorest impression of any city I've ever been in, and I'm in little hurry to go back. "Customer Service" -- when it came to dining, renting a car, asking directions-- even trying to check into my hotel room was nonexistant. (And in some cases just downright rude -- Avis got added to my "Never again" list).

(I do have to give kudos to the N1120A for his offer of hospitality and the agent working at the CO ticket counter who effortlessly accomidated me on a flight an entire day earlier than origianally booked).

Another thing to consider and this is just me talking.

DL and SWA have different situations going on, WN is more focused on other cities, and DL is in BK doing other things.

WN does know what they are doing and maybe just can't see an opportunity to make money in the current situation at MSY, but DL does see an ooportunity.

WN has done a good job of trying to help MSY in their own way, not just by adding flights.

If WN sees an opportunity to expand more flight wise at MSY they certainly will. If it won't make them money, they won't fly it, its very rare WN does it just for market share versus other airlines.

Good luck to DL on the MSY-LAX route.

I've got the video proof of NW being the first airline back.....I'd just jumped off from my second helicopter ride viewing the damage, and the 320 was rolling out on landing runway 10 as we jumped in the car to come back to the terminal.
