Why Does BA Have Cloth Seats At Rear Of B767s?

Mon Sep 25, 2006 3:46 am

I travelled to Barcelona recently with BA, on one of their Euro fleet Boeing 767s. I noticed that the rear of the aircraft had cloth seats, and the front had leather.

What is the reason behind this? Will they eventually be changed to an all leather material? Is it like this on any of their other aircraft?

IIRC, they put people with bladder control problems up front.

I think it's because the leather seats are the convertable C/Y seats and the cloth seats are bog standard Y seats.

Can't they have non-convertable seats which are leather though? Like some of the other seats in the BA short-haul fleet?

Are they going to change it every? Looks very messy!

There's another thread about that very subject. Apparently the short haul fleet is being reconfigured to squeeze more seats in - maybe that's the time they'll dump the cloth seats.

I think that Sky736 got it right - the cloth covered seats at the rear are not interchangeable to the front of the cabin. I also understand that potentially 'troublesome' pax - i.e. a party of kids or otherwise will usually be seated at the rear of the cabin where any damage caused to the seats is more easily repaired.

However, leather seats are more easily cleaned, which is why many LCCs have leather seats, even if they advertise them as a luxury item!

Maybe it's the people in the front of the plane who, ahem, soil their seats more  Wink

Soon only the 767 will have the rear cabin in fabric rather than leather. The 757s will be comdified to the new SpaceSaver seats, and that will mean the rear cabin will be changed to leather. No word on the 767s yet, I guess they don't have that much longer to go to warrant a cabin change.

The Airbus has always had leather seats throughout, even the old BCal ones!

Thankyou! The most decent answer I have had so far!! It is a shame the Europe fleet 767s don't have any plans of becoming and all leather cabin. You would have thought they would have 'dusked' ALL the 767s, even when the long-haul ones were being converted!!

Dusk is only for long haul planes, as it means the installation of the Club World beds and World Traveller Plus, so short haul planes were never going to be dusked.

Personally, I think that the remaining short haul 767s will eventually be converted to long haul, so BA can expand its long haul network without buying new planes, until the new 777s are delivered in 2008. The arrival of more 320/321 will fill in the gap for the European network. That's just my guess though.

Yup, they are dusking all as all 767's are going long haul, they won't be operating any short-haul for BA soon. I think your also right in saying that buses are going to be taking over all euro routes. Should be interesting to see what the new club world seats (747 first, 767 last) are like and the new IFE (AVOD) Audio and Visual on Demand IFE which is being fitted to the 767 (G-BNWC first)

Hope that helps

Sorry to be ignorant, but whats does that mean? Seen it in quite a few topic discussions on a.net.

Also, will the rest of the 767s really be converted to long-haul? I think its a brilliant idea by BA if they do, so they can fill in some of the niche markets available by other european airlines currently.

Before the 767s were dusked, what classes were available? Traveller, Traveller Plus and Club? Were the two former the same seats as they are now but just without PTVs?

I thought they were not going to put the New Club World seats on the 767s, because they have only just been dusked?

There was post on here already about the dusking of 767's. I believe the first dusking 767's will go on DTW route as a a-netter indicated in a prevous post.

I think there is some confusion here. All long haul 767s have been dusked already. The NEW Club World conversion is called "streched" (as supposed to Dusked). 767s are not going to get streched (no New Club World) because they have only just been dusked and it is widely expected that these aircraft will be retired within a few years.

Before the 767 were dusked, they were configured with First (8) Club World (Cradle seat) and World Traveller. Once dusked, First was removed, and the New Club World, World Traveller Plus seats were put in, and the World Traveller seats got the seat back screens added.

The true reason, is because when they were converted to leather seats, BA was in financial trouble, it would be too expensive for BA to convert all the seats to leather, so they decided that on the 757 and 767 fleet, they would leave the rear cabin with cloth seats, as they weren't convertible seats, and the airline would probably fill up from the front of the cabin, so to save money, they only converted club and the convertable cabin

As said before, "dusk" is the name given to the installation of the Club World beds from the previous Cradle seat, and the addition of the World Traveller Plus seats on the aircraft.

All 747/777/767 at BA are now dusked.
