Qatar Airways Choses GE For Their B777s

Tue Sep 26, 2006 4:24 am

Was going to place this in other Qatar/B777 thread but was too rambling. For everyone's information, though I'm sure not surprise:

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - General Electric Co. said Monday its aviation unit received an order for 40 GE90 engines from Qatar Airways for the airline's 20 longer-range Boeing Co. The order is valued at more than $750 million, GE said.

Not surprising since they are the exclusive manufacturers for the 772LRs and 777-300ERs, thanks for the link anyways.

Well they didn't have much choice  Wink  Silly

The 777-300ER's and 200LR's which they have ordered are only made flown by GE's exclusivly.

It was a close run thing between established player General Electric and upstart rival GE, generating a bitter bidding war, cutting margins to the bone, but GE won it in the end  Wink

With earlier 777s having 3 suppliers, I imagine that airlines got much better terms for their engines...

GE got an exclusive deal on the newer 777 because they made an arrangement with Boeing for underwriting R&D on other projects, I think the 787 but I'm not sure.
