747 LCF Is In The Air Again

Tue Sep 26, 2006 8:36 am

For those that missed it arriving from Taipei, it's just lifted off from BFI a few minutes ago for a round trip flight back there on a 1hr 50 flight.

When is it going to Everett to be painted? Does anyone know?

I saw it making the wide turn to the north over Kent while at my son's soccer practice. It was pretty impressive - from a distance, it reminds me of one of those big Antonov transports. Except for the fact that it's green.  Smile

I'm pretty much worthless at his practice. I spend most of my time watching the various planes fly over - it's actually funner than watching a bunch of defiant 7 year olds take turns rolling on the ground  Smile.

I wish I had my camera, but it was impressive nonetheless.

Do you know if a scheme had been chosen and if so what will it look like?

My thoughts exactly. I'm hoping it will be the "new" 787 scheme, rather then the boring Evergreen livery.

Bummer! So they're waiting until right around when it's supposed to start hauling parts? I guess that makes sense.(?)

The house "Dreamliner" scheme is quite heavy with the metallic flakes in the blue belly paint, and carrying that extra weight across the Atlantic and Pacific is something that Boeing will not do.
If it was said by us, then it must be true.

They can't miss on the opportunity to provide a flying billboard for their continued investment in local business though...it will just be something simpler, though large, I would guess.

Every place that monster flies, people will know that their city is involved in the civil aerospace industry...it is a tremendous (pun intended) bit of flying billboard. Painting it white is missing out on the chance to make sure locals and Congress members remember that "What's Good For Boeing is Good For Town X".

I was actually driving (well, sitting in traffic) on NB I-5 and noticed it taxiing and taking off. Talk about a lumbering beast leaving a trail of smoke. It certainly doesn't get many points for beauty.

In fact, when my wife saw it for the first time a week or so ago, she mentioned that it looked kind of like the snake that ate an entire sheep.

RE: 747 LCF Is In The Air Again

Fri Sep 29, 2006 2:40 am

According to internal boeing people familiar with the project (747/787 people in general) there was an email/notice/ect that went out saying that the Aircraft will be painted in the airlines colors that are operating that route:

EVA for the Pacific Route
Cargolux for the Atlantic Routes.

It makes sense and its better than just white (the most "efficient") but won't be nearly as gorgeous as the Dreamliner colors.

As a side note: A friend of mine who is a procurement agent for Boeing (in charge of getting parts from Charleston to Everett on the LCF) said that the LCF during wind tunnel tests actually came out to have equal aerodynamic efficiency of the normal 747-400, it just displaces more air.  Wink

Additionally that a "loaded" LCF with a full 130,000lb 787 "parcel" will be way under the weight of the MTOW 744. He said they are still toying with the idea of putting a "hybrid" Dreamliner/Airline color scheme on it because the weight really doesn't matter on that aircraft.

Just passing that information along. If its truely legit(the source is) time will only tell, so don't shoot the messenger.

IIRC, I was under the impression that Evergreen was going to operate all three LCFs, and those would be U.S. registered (Boeing owned).
Any further information/clarification would be appreciated.

Slightly disappointing if true. Like I said, it's a tremendous PR opportunity for Boeing. It doesn't have to be gaudy, just professional and recognizable. "Dreamliner Transportation" in large stylized lettering would do the trick, or something along those lines. Silhoutte of the 787 perhaps to go with it.

I'd like to see a livery similar to the 747 with the China tail and the dreamliner body paint.

Do the same with these. Dreamliner paint on the body with some kind of title signifying the task, and then the tails in the airline liveries...

Here's an idea that would be really fun...instead of doing the Dreamliner paint on the whole LCF, you paint a to-scale 787 (in the Dreamliner colors of course) on the cargo bulge going back to the vertical tail, which you would paint part way up. That would make for quite a show, in my opinion.

You should see this thing take off from BFI. It kicks up huge clouds of grass and dirt, then they have to use the runway for taxi'ing because of all the shit on the taxiway(s).

Oops... sorry... in my mind i was thinking EIA but wrote EVA.

That whole multiple evergreen (EVA Airlines owns Evergreen Aviation Technologies who did the conversions of the aircraft: Evergreen International Airlines is a subsidy of Evergreen International Aviation) thing gets very confusing. LOL

It's down at BFI today (28th) - I wonder when it'll be heading out again? I ran down by there during lunch today and got to look at it for a few minutes from one of the parking lots. Definitely has the "pregnant" look!

I also got to see the new 737-900ER come in for a landing. Another pretty aircraft.

I was stuck in traffic going north on I-5 this morning, and I almost crapped my pants when I saw the LCF taxiing for takeoff. I had a perfect view of it as it got off the ground, and watched it head over downtown Seattle, then do a little zig-zag before turning east.

One thing I noticed is that the engines seemed to putting out quite a bit of smoke (soot) compared to every other 747-400 I've ever seen take off. Does anyone know why? I could literally see the dark smoke trails for miles, and it definitely wasn't condensation-related. It was reminiscent of the water-injected 707 engines! Well, maybe not that bad.

Around what time? I saw it being pushed out of the hangar around 7:30...I have great views of BFI at various parts of the day, except at work. Stupid Redmond.  Sad

My father flew on FISTA (NKC-135A: 55-3120) and FISTA II(KNC-135E: 55-3135). FISTA was known as "Steam Jet One" because of its water injected J57's. Holy cow those were loud and put out one heck of a smoke screen.

Of course the TF33's they pulled off the 707's for the -135E's weren't much "quieter."

It was about 9:20... I had to go into Seattle for a meeting, so it wasn't my usual commute.

I have views of RNT from my bedroom, but the most exciting action I've seen there lately was the takeoff of the first 737-900ER. Woo hoo. I miss the 757s.

I'd still take it over not having a view at all. I love Seattle just because you never know what kind of weird random ship is going to pass right overhead on it's way to BFI. A few days ago I saw a 737 that caught my eye because it was entirely unpainted. I don't mean that weird green primer coat either, it was all that very green anodized aluminum that the plane is built up with...so it was BRIGHT shiny metalic green. It stuck out like a sore thumb when you combined it with the fact the plane was low over SoDo.

It's a shame they can't make the planes skins anodized like that...it's really quite an exciting look. I assume ramp rash means that the second it got dinged you'd be in trouble, because you can't exactly re-anodize a skin panel while it's actually on the airplane...oh well.

Thank you. I have the honor of working on this particular aircraft many times, and each time it comes into the gate it took my breath away.
Also the lower part of the skin (the blue part) is a beautiful shimmering blue...I guess all the metal flakes put in there. Surprisingly it is not heavy, as expected. B-18210 is lighter than -11/-12/-15, which all had same equipments. Those 4 are the last 747-400 PAX versions made and was delivered the same time.
One little detail: The Dreamliner 744 is almost NEVER dirty. Either it's the paint or CI in TPE has been washing it often.
