Feds Write Check For US Southwest's Newest Airport

Wed Sep 27, 2006 2:06 am

After many years, and multiple noise impact studies amid lobbying, the FAA green-lighted the new airport for St. George, Utah. It even made the homepage for the FAA.

Excellent news! I knew from the title just exactly which airport this would be.

They are tearing down the old airport correct? It will be a sad day when they do that!

They are going to build houses, parks, and public buildings on the mesa. I'm sure another round of heavy-duty environmental study will be needed to ensure it'll be safe for future residents.

I'm sure skywest will be starting service on the airport's opening day.

My dad attended Dixie Junior College in St. George in the early 1950's, when the entire area had less than 10,000 people. He came there from Las Vegas (LV High School class of 1949) before it exploded in growth. He also worked part time as a park ranger at Zion National Park from 1955-1971.

I bring this up because the last time he visited he couldn't find anything familiar except the Temple and the airport. He told me once that he was always sure somebody was going to descend too low and hit the side of the mesa before the runway. Thankfully none ever did (to my knowledge).

I am glad that the St. George area is finally getting an airport suitable to its needs. Hopefully, in addition to SkyWest, USAirways Express will provide service to PHX and LAS.

You will see CRJ service to SGU rather than just EMB-120s that were used due to the short runway up on the Mesa. SGU could possibly even see some 738, or MD-90 service from DL mainline before much longer.
