My dad attended Dixie Junior College in St. George in the early 1950's, when the entire area had less than 10,000 people. He came there from Las Vegas (LV High School class of 1949) before it exploded in growth. He also worked part time as a park ranger at Zion National Park from 1955-1971.
I bring this up because the last time he visited he couldn't find anything familiar except the Temple and the airport. He told me once that he was always sure somebody was going to descend too low and hit the side of the mesa before the runway. Thankfully none ever did (to my knowledge).
I am glad that the St. George area is finally getting an airport suitable to its needs. Hopefully, in addition to SkyWest, USAirways Express will provide service to PHX
