Kalitta Air 747 Engine Fire 9/26/06

Wed Sep 27, 2006 5:00 pm

Last night 9/26/06 at JFK around 2230 local Kalitta Air had a fire in its number 4 engine, from the looks of it didn't appear to be major ( I got there after the fire was extingushed. I am speaking of cosmetic damage), Port Authority thought otherwise. There had to be at least 15 PANYNJ Fire trucks along with dozens of PANYNJ Police cars and another 10-15 FDNY Fire trucks staged at the PA Police station. The reason I made that trip over to Lufthansa ramp was the abundace of Emergency pesonell. Was there more to the story that I did'nt know about becuase that seemed liked over kill.

Probably wasn't overkill as to emergency/fire staffing as to be ready had the fire spread into the fuel tanks, hydraulic fluids or cargo areas.
I wonder if this was the same a/c I saw at EWR a few weeks ago or the one that had a loss - actually a detachment - of an engine over Lake Michigan a year or 2 ago?

Quoting FlyDeltaJets (Thread starter):
that seemed liked over kill.

Whilst not a professional firefighter or emergency responder, my experience has been that these folk feel much happier responding in force and standing around for a bit than they are attending official inquiries as to why a disaster occurred while they were sitting around the Firehouse drinking coffee.
If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

I once landed at an airport in Germany. We had a problem with the landing gear. But not the normal problem where it would not go down. Rather, it would not retract. We had to return to the airport and the place was lit up with emergency personel from what seemed like a 100 km radius!!

StealthZ is right. They would rather bring too much out than not enough.

Agreed better safe than sorry but all of the NYFD respose is what I am talking about. What about the large residental area of Jamaica. What was to happen if say a large house fire were to break out. Also I think the 15-20 Port Authority fire trucks were enough to handle any thing major.
