Southend In Talks With KLM

Southend Airport are in talks with KLM

Quote:
Royal Dutch airline KLM could be expanding to Southend Airport with several business flights a day, it has been revealed.

The news of an international airline being interested in coming to Southend is a boost for the airport's regeneration proposals.

Originally, a planned new railway station and terminal building were scheduled to be in place by 2000 and now the aim is for 2012 to tie in with the London Olympics.

continued...
Southend Business and Tourism Partnership is being asked to back the idea.

The airport's operators have been working with Tony Le Masurier, former general manager of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in the UK, who now runs his own commercial consultancy, TLM Consulting.

In a letter to partnership members, Mr Le Masurier said: "The object is to establish an operation which will serve the main European and intercontinental destinations through a feeder service several times a day from Southend to a European city.

"Although several European cities would be suitable, the best option is undoubtedly Amsterdam, from where all the world's main business centres are accessible on a daily basis."

As someone that hung around Southend Airport in the 60's and 70's, when the airport was bustling with passenger flights, it's about time that an airline saw the merits to serving the 500,000+ population in the South East Essex region. Stansted and other airports are still a drive away, especially in rush hours, and this airport has great potential. There have been B.737, MD-80, Caravelle, BAe 146, and Fokker F-28 scheduled flights in the past to name but a few jet types. Regional Jets or similar types would be a perfect fit as long as the pricing structure is not too far off from that of Ryan Air or Easy Jet. Still, I'd prefer to see Carvairs and Viscounts on approach like the good old days!!! Big grin

Good for Southend. I live in the town and am a great fan of the airport. I know it has not been at its 'peak' over the last few years, but with a new terminal and railway station underway for the London 2012 Olympics, I am sure it will be a great base to fly to and from.

I reckon other airlines/destinations seving it could be FlyBE to

Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Manchester, Dublin & Paris CDG? (and possibly some seasonal flights to Palma, Alicante, Malaga, Geneva etc?)

Eastern Airways to Newcastle and Aberdeen

and VLM to Brussels?

I know there was a recent topic about this and people were saying they didnt think it could work for Southend because of its close proximity to London City airport and London Stansted, but I think if that was the case, then the Southend Borough Council (or whoever is funding the airport) would not have all these plans for a new terminal etc.

Any thoughts?

I wish EGMC well, but having met the the airport's management you shouldn't believe all you read in the Echo.

Proximity to the Channel Tunnel mean CDG and BRU IMHO won't work.

Being in the highly populated south-east, I would imagine there is always the possibility of new services to the traditionally popular destinations. The number of passengers poached from LHR or STN would hardly be noticeable given the vast numbers handled there.
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

That will be the 15th destination in the UK for KLM, quite impressive if you ask me...
