Major US Airlines - Why Blue Seat Covers?

Thu Sep 28, 2006 9:45 am

Why do most major US airlines use blue seat covers? I remember that airlines used to use more different colors than they do now. Delta used to have a mix of red and orange seats on their domestic 767-300s. The red/orange seat covers have been replaced by the blue pinstripe design, and now some of the domestic 767-300s have the new blue leather. Song, although a modern concept, used light blue with colored sides. However, with Song folded into the Delta fleet, the colorful seat covers are being replaced by the standard blue leather. Does anyone know why blue is the color used nowadays? Just curious.

Blue is a pretty prominant part of the paint scheme of most carriers, for an obvious reason, the sky. Further, blue is relaxing and helps passengers stay calm during a long journey in cattle class. It also gives the illusion of cool. Beyond this, blue is easy to keep clean.

I don't know but I am guessing it is because blue is a safe color because most people would rather have a calm color than a bright color on a plane. Blue doesn't show stains easily so it is economical. The color blue is also an appetite suppressant which could help with the lack of meals served on most U.S carriers. Most U.S carriers have blue in their livery and the blue also coordinates with that.

I think blue is a professional and calming color. There is a reason that not only the seats are blue. Almost all the uniforms of airlines in the United states are blue as well. Everyone from pilots, to gate agents to flight attendants often have blue/navy as the dominant color.

Those blue seats are so much more comfortable than seats were 20 years ago. They are contouring to the body and not have features like winged headrests.

And the best part is that some airlines have managed to find cows that have blue skin so you get leather and blue too!  Silly

Psychologists have done a lot of work into people's reactions to different colours and blue is clearly associated with quality. It inspires trust and reassurance. You might also note that both Boeing and Airbus have recently changed their house liveries and both are substantially blue.

DL has also gone the simple European way of doing the interiors. Not to much flash, but a nice comfortable seat once they get worn in.

I never really paid that close of attention, but just about every plane I have been on in the last few years had blue seats. I remember seeing, other colors in the past; gold, orange, red, grey, green, tan, etc. Sometimes the seats were different colors throughout the plane, I always thought that looked weird.

I like the multi-color look, which is mostly blue, on the NW DC-9s and the rest of the NW fleet.

Now that I think about it, everything on CO is blue as well - the seat covers, the F/A's uniforms, the gate agents' uniforms - even the carpeting on the planes is blue!

Who says all seats are blue? You must've not have flown on commuter planes, F9, and WN:-P (gray, green, and yellow/brown respectively).

I'm curious about your definition of major. Last I checked WN was pretty major... more domestic passengers than anyone else.... more profit too....

Ironically, it is next to impossible to buy a new or nearly new automobile with a blue interior. The automotive industry has virtually given the consumer only 2 color choices and they are grey and brown/tan. Interesting.

Chrysler has grey leather in a few models and I drove a 2004 Mercedes-Benz C230 with white leather. Remember the canary yellow Cadillacs with yellow leather?

I used to have a 78 Chevy Caprice Estate Wagon with red interior. The plastic pieces all faded to pink. I was able to remove them and paint them with some spray paint I found at a hobby shop that was the same color as they used to be. They looked brand new again.

My last three new cars 97 Saturn SL 2, 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis, and 2005 Dodge Magnum had either grey or tan interiors.

The "newest car" I remember seeing a blue interior in was my dad's 1990 Buick Skylark. He got rid of that in 1995.

My 85 Honda Accord has Blue interior and my 80 Mercedes has tan.

other cars and interior colors I have had:

85 Ford Bronco II/ tan
64 Mercury Comet/ tan
64 Mercury Comet/silver/tan
85 Buick Rivera/ tan
72 Cadillac DeVille/ green
77 Pontiac Trans Am/ black
84 Olds 98/ blue
96 Chevy Lumina/ grey
65 Dodge Polara/ red
77 Ford F-150/ black
66 Ford F-100/ tan
80 Cadillac Fleetwood/ tan
93 Chrysler Lebaron/ grey
89 Mercury Sable/grey
71 Mercedes 220/ tan
72 Mercedes 220D/ tan
74 Mercedes 240D/ tan

Wow 22 cars and only 2 with blue seats. But just about every plane I have been on in the last five years has had blue seats. Interesting...

You beat me to it. But I agree, while it is different, I am thinking blue would do them better. The grey looks worn very easily and the interiors of the planes look very dull. I am dissappointed with the A330, such a new 'flassy' airplane and the inside is very dull.
There is something special about planes....

While the Boeing scheme is nice, it's got so much blue to the point it's almost visually annoying towards the front of the aircraft. The new Airbus livery I don't like at all. The old one had a lot more character, was more bold, and just looked cooler.

For some reason I think this shade of blue is rather depressing, no surprising many topics end up with people "fighting" and giving out sarcastic responses etc.  Wink Even though blue is my favorite color I'd make it white or perhaps another shade of blue.

WN recently revamped all its interiors (IIRRC the design's called 'Spirit' interiors) to a 2-tone dark blue/tan.

BTW, YX's 717 fleet uses tan leather for their seating.

Part of that may be due to those colors can go with nearly every exterior color offered.

One more item to add (I thought of this while away at lunch); TZ's 738 fleet has (or at least in 2004, had) dark brown leather seats.
