With an announcement of expanding Boeing's India Managmeent Team, I wouldn't be surprised if some of these UFO are for Indian carriers, even some of the 787 UFOs. 9W has been interested in the 787 and they may have pulled the trigger.

At the beginning of the year, I didn't think there was much chance that Boeing would repeat 1000 sales in 2007. Now it's looking like there's a chance. Wow. This is definitely not sustainable.

My question is what airlines Airbus will find to sign 700 orders in Dec/Jan to pull another New Year's Surprise.

I can't believe the number of 737's going out the door, but the real interest is in the widebody competitions going on. I really want to see at least one order of significant size for the 748i.

I would lean toward a smaller carrier, and agree 9W sounds like a good option. I think when AA finally orders the 787, they're going to mean business, and not make a piddly little order for 8 planes. Might as well fill up as many "early" delivery slots as possible rather than chopping up the order and risk losing them. I think the same will go for UA or DL.

Certainly possible, though IMHO I expect "only" around 900 orders for the year, of which 600+ will be 737s. I mean, already 503 orders for the 737 alone, wow. Now it's time to wait for the monthly update to see which exact types all these UFOs are, then it might be easier to tell for who they are.

I agree... think about how huge AA's fleet is and how much they will be "replacing". Most legacy carriers orders are going to be pretty hefty given the size of the airlines.

The big question is when will they get to one-triple-oh triple-sevens. Only 150 to go.

Where are the freighter sales? After the mysterious A332F launch order, the 777F is looking lacking.

That's amazing...if they only need 150 777 airframes to reach 1,000...then it surely can't be that much harder to reach 1,050. That's how many 757s were produced. There have been 969 orders for the 767. The 747 has sold 1,441 (through August) but the 777 has sold at a much faster pace.

The 777 line is along term investment. I think they'll get 150 more in orders but it won't be this year. Perhaps in three to four years time they'll have it.

It's good to see that B787 sales have not slowed down in spite of the A350XWB announcement. Several months have passed since Farnborough, and except for the SIA "endorsment", there has been very little public interest from other airlines in the "new-all-new" A350, while the B787 continues to pick up a steady flow of orders. I think this is partially because airlines perceive the B787 as a more advanced airplane with bigger potential, as well as because Airbus credibility to deliver a completely new product in a flawless manner (meeting schedule commitments) has been compromized with A380.

Quoting Glom (Reply 19):

I think this is because the B777F is very expensive, and has strong competition from converted B744, as well as the B748F. Both represent a hell of good value. In case of a converted B744 you get more freight capacity for significantly less money (at the expense of fuel economy, but the initial price differential pays for many gallons of jet fuel). On the other hand, the B748F is not that much more expensive, has more capacity AND better fuel economy.

777F sales may soar if Boeing offer's it as the new USAF tanker. you're talking about over 500 tankers that need replacing that a KC-777 could fill. That would be an enormous boost that that line and keep it going for a very, very long time (20 year perhaps).

Zvezda,
Don't forget that DL could easily place 100 orders next year (especially if the price of fuel keeps going down)... and if EK waits 'till next year to place that alleged order, then you're off to a pretty good start to al least come close to this years pace.

I would say if not when. There is a good chance the B777 could reach 1000 orders, but it's not a certainty. The A350 and B787 both make the B777 a lot less attractive. The only major advantage of the B777 now is availability 3-4 years earlier. Relative to the B787, that is a direct reflection of the relative desirability.

You sure Boeing aren't giving these planes away? It's an astonishing year of sales for them.

Though I have a hunch that a third of those 787 orders as recorded today, and I repeat, as recorded today, will never be fulfilled for one reason or another.

Hardly an unsurprising comment coming from an Airbus supporter like you. What tired of hearing how many times the A380 is being delayed that you have to come up with a ridiculous statement like that? Sorry to burst your bubble of unreality but the A380 stands more of a chance of having orders cancelled than the 787.

The 777-300ER will (IMO) be the aircraft to get the 777 line past 1,000 airframes, from 2007 on it will be the best selling 777. It's the perfect solution for airlines that want more lift than a 777-200 but less than a A380 or 747-8I.

In all fairness I would think that customers leaning towards this plane (and I'm sure there are many loyal Airbus customers interested) are waiting to see how the A380 fiasco works out as well as more specs on the A350XWB before making ANY decision.

You lose a lot of credibility and sound bitter in that response. Boeing is well past the point of having to post questionable orders (IE: Primaris) to prop up sales of this plane. If anything the reverse is now true: There is more demand than supply for this aircraft, a manufacturers dream scenario!

I never tire of hearing of that, I just get more and more anxious.

The only reason I say this is the volatility in the market, not only internal but external. With recessions and terrorism threats, SARS et al, not all those orders as recorded will be honoured, Just a hunch.

Also just a hunch that this is one of the factors stopping 787 backers stumping up the cash for a second production line, amongst others like, the super XWB on the horizon and not enough of the right plastic in the world to supply the expanded production line.

it is just a hunch so just take it as that ok?

Probably... i still have beleive the 777F will get its share.

Looking at these facts on range alone(found on manufacturers websites):
777F - 4895nm
744ERF - 4970nm
748F - 4475nm
763F - 3270nm
A388F - 5600nm
A332F - Less than 777F but more than 763F... can't find numbers (any help?)

The non-"heavy lifters" may want the added range of the 777F while still having a very decent payload. The 748F is going to have a shorter range than the existing 744ERF. The 777F will have a decent 420nm range over the new 748F. Thats almost a 10% increase in range, a very big selling point.
The 763F will have its market also and the A332F i don't see being a huge player honestly. It will have its niche but will not be "the next great freighter."
As far as the A388F... only time will tell, thats quite the range(IF it can be met...) but its not a heavy hauler.

Sorry... still living in a dream. SEA to BOS nonstop in a 738 isn't as much fun as it sounds...

i am sure it's a scream in a 320.

Yes BOS-SEA is a scream on an A320, it usually comes immediately following the announcement from the pilot that they have to make an unscheduled tech-stop due to lack of fuel.

Now this is great sarcasm!  Wink Definitely one of the better jabs I've ever seen here. Thanks.

Don't get me wrong... i love 737's... just 2650 miles is a LONG flight in them.

Yeah all those AS A320's... NOT!

OH... with all due respect to the A320 (very little...  Wink j/k) it could make it going eastbound with a half load of passengers. Though it would be gliding down the "glide slope" into BOS.

With respect to this week's orders, it gives the 787 program 2 milestones:

300 firm orders for the "too small" 788

400 firm orders for the whole program.

I believe the 8 787 UFOs announced today are for 2 carriers.

Could there be 500 ordered before EIS?
