NZ To Offer CHC-AKL-CHC Shuttle Flights

Fri Sep 29, 2006 8:45 pm

From a staff update to the media earlier today:

Air New Zealand is to introduce a special daily shuttle service between Christchurch and Auckland for Christchurch travellers connecting with international flights out of Auckland.

The new Boeing 737 service, which will be operated to/from the international terminal at Auckland Airport in lieu of a domestic service, is effective from 30 October (northbound) and 31 October (southbound).

The service will provide a streamlined connection to the airline’s long haul operations from Auckland to London, via Los Angeles or Hong Kong, and to Shanghai due to commence 6 November, as well as Apia. Similarly, direct connections would be provided from Air New Zealand’s early morning arriving flights from North America, Perth and Tonga.

Group General Manager Short Haul Airlines, Norm Thompson said the move was aimed at better supporting customers from Christchurch who travelled on Air New Zealand’s international flights via Auckland.

“The fact that they will be able to transit “airside” in Auckland before their onward travel instead of having to transfer themselves and their luggage between the domestic and international terminals, will make their experience significantly easier,” said Mr Thompson.

“We also anticipate more efficient operations from our perspective in that flight departures can be delayed while waiting for transferring customers.”

Customers will be checked through in Christchurch and on arrival at the international terminal simply transfer to their onward gate lounge. Likewise returning customers will transfer to the gate for their Auckland-Christchurch flight and clear customs on arrival in Christchurch.

Details of the new daily service are as follows:
Depart Christchurch 8.45 pm Arrive Auckland 10.05 pm
Depart Auckland 6.40 am Arrive Christchurch 8.00 am

Only customers travelling to/from international flights will be able to use the service.

This is not a "true" shuttle service. As can be seen routes such as SYD-MEL, LHR-MAN, CDG-LYS, SFO-LAX, LGA-DCA are "true" shuttle services. This is nothing more than an additional flight with a bit of fluff to sell it.

Very good idea. Transfering domestic to internation is very unconvenient in AKL. Hope they introduce the same kind of shuttle from WLG.

I am curious as to how immigration will work. Will the flight to Christchurch from Auckland essentially be considered international and passengers would go through immigration and customs in CHC? Or will they clear customs and immigration in Auckland and then go back to the international gates?

Regardless, it will make things nicer. Although that walk isn't that bad in the summer when it is light out, transferring between those terminals in the dark winter is not fun and the bus is a hassle. I'd still prefer LAX-CHC nonstop service, but this an attempt to make the transfer a bit easier. The walk use to give some great views, but now all you see is fence and parking lot. I remember the day when I was a kid and could see a gorgeous UA 747 at the international terminal that would soon take me home as I was walking over from the domestic terminal.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Well NZs LAX, LHR and SFO passengers from CHC won't be able to use this service

Quoting RoseFlyer (Reply 3):

A Transit means not going throu Customs at the first arrival International airport, but going throu Customs at the second arrival airport. You raise a good point thou as its considered a domestic shuttle

I wonder if they will consider using a 733 to run these sort of flights throughout the day? Say 1 733 running 3-4 daily return flights.

NZ2 departs at 11pm and goes to LHR via LAX.

Amen, may it return someday, the UA 747 that is. Or any UA aircraft.

It isn't the same a/c operating for sure, but it is a shuttle in pretty much any sense of the word.

Customers will clear customs/immigration in CHC in both directions.

The service is mostly for NZ2 and NZ39.
In the morning NZ1 and 5 as well as others should all link up fine.

That will save time considering you won't need to to clear Customs/MAF in AKL. Never enjoyed Customs and MAF in AKL due to the lines. If only NZ or QF would do a WLG shuttle now

NZ was talking about setting up a WLG shuttle also... they wanted to see how well the CHC shuttle worked first.
Main reason for the WLG shuttle is to shutup all the whingers (not you 777ER) who go on about how WLG should have this that and the other flight when its a tiny little airport with a small runway, noise restrictions, terrain restrictions, weather restrictions and relatively small population.  Wink

Oh boy, here we go again.

Wellington had the second largest population in New Zealand on 30 June
2005. Auckland had 1,241,600, Christchurch had 367,700 followed by Hamilton on 185,000

Its funny how we only hear about WLGs fog days and not AKLs fog days, like two in one week at AKL last week. But thats for another thread

Finally NZ has come up with a smart idea, connecting to CHC from AKL is awful and not a good entry to New Zealand (if your headed south). You have to get on the bus or walk with your luggage and then go to the domestic terminal which is in need of a few licks of paint, and compared to the other airports in NZ AKL's domestic is so far behind in terms of WLG and DUD.
It would be so much easier and so much less haste doing MAF and Customs in CHC.

So what is the new MCT for pax on these flights??? Presume it would be the same as Intl to Intl for AKL.

Good idea, although I'm not sure how much business they get. SQ, a partner for Star Alliance Miles, operate daily out of CHC in summer with convenient connections not only to LHR but numerous other destinations.

Perhaps they should have focused on ideas to streamline the process at the domestic terminal for those pax so that at least they have the option of selling excess seats to domestic travelers as well. E.g. airside transfer of pax and intl labelled ULDs..

That is looking like very tight connection times at AKL to LAX. About an hour. I'm not sure that I would want to risk times that close. If the flight from CHC is late, or has a mx issue there is no protection for getting to AKL in time. The times I've flown CHC-AKL-LAX I've given myself a several hour cushion of time. Always better to kill time reading, or looking at people/airplanes than having a missed connection.

One has to remember that Wellington tends to use a very broad definition of urban area (Hutt, Porirua inclusive). CHC has at least another 30,000 people living in close proximity in Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Rolleston etc. So make what you will of the official 2300 difference in populations of Christhchurch and Wellington.

Also the regional figures from the 2001 census:
Wellington Region 2001: 423,765
Canterbury Region 2001: 481,431
difference: 57,666
http://www2.stats.govt.nz/domino/ext...mProfiles.nsf/FindInfobyArea/09-rc
http://www2.stats.govt.nz/domino/ext...mProfiles.nsf/FindInfobyArea/13-rc

The difference is likely greater today as the population is growing more quickly in Canterbury.

NZs Domestic terminal at AKL is getting a new 'lick of paint' right now, in terms of a re-development of the terminal which will put the QF and NZ terminals under one roof, greater floor space, more shops, more Security screening space etc.

I personally think a WLG 'express' flight would do good because of the lower north island, like Otaki, Levin, Palmerston North, Masterton residents using it instead of having to go throu AKL Customs and MAF and then getting on a domestic flight from the domestic terminal which could take a few hours before the next flight to their home airport. The same can be said for the South Island. I presume the transit flight would be the same as the inbound fare to AKL, so no need to pay any more

I'm not so sure about this.
Otaki perhaps. Levin maybe. But if you're in Palmerston North there is no point in adding a 2 and half hour drive to the end of a long-haul flight and its tack-on. Far nicer to spend a portion of that time lesiurely transferring at Auckland, then having a 5 minute ride home from PMR.
Time for a new viewing deck at AKL!
