I hope they're not planning to tear down the old one with the portholes! It has character.

Oh well. Another loss for mid-60s architecture.  Smile

Here's some more info:

new tower to include a Category II Instrument Approach landing system, new tower to be built near the parking garage at the airport

What's going to happen to the old tower on top of AA's Concourse D? Is that what's getting replace? If so, I think AA should sink a few mil into completely redoing Concourse D and turn the old tower into the new Admirals Club. Wishful thinking, I know.

Hopefully this can end or at least substantially reduce the many countless delay times that LGA seams to be barraged with each day. LGA is so convenient to get to mid-town Manhattan when compared to EWR or JFK.

DAMMIT!

That 60's style tower with the potholes is a landmark! Probably one of the most recognizeable features there (aside from the welcome sign maybe). Shame it's getting whacked.

Tower improvement is important ant great - but why doesn't LGA fix its many other problems first!? The airport is dirty and I ALWAYS encounter lengthy delays when arriving or departing the airport. Also, LGA could definitely use a few escalators in the terminals - it makes no sense that passengers need to drag bags down stairs when going down to baggage claim.

Look forward to the new tower going up in a few years - should look nicer than the old one..

WEll hopefully this will be the start of a whole new redevelopment project at LGA, esp. the terminal. The CTA needs replacing and if somehow they could connect the US Air and Delta/NW terminals in one seemless terminal that wold be a great benefit. Lastly if they could relocate the runways (perhaps build up landfill in the bay and relocate them there, that would allow for increased traffic and simultaneous take off and landing.

The tower will probably come down when the concourses are replaced in the CTB. The CTB itself was completely rennovated in the mid to late 90s.

But for some unknown reason, probably because the Port Authority is incompetent, Concourses A, B, C, and D were left to languish in their 1960s origin.

Leaky ceilings, narrow hallways, rotting jetways, dangling wires, inadequate seating, lack of concessions, asbestos, and a basement-like smell are the best ways to describe this New York gateway.

Seeing how the tower is actually connected to Concourse D, I'd imagine they both have to come down together.

The new tower will be placed on the north-west side of the garage across from the AA section of the CTB.

They want to put a CATII control panel in. It's the typical FAA bullshit. "This will reduce delays", no it won't.. Nothing will reduce delays in New York. Atleast with getting rid of the old tower, the ceiling wont be falling down. That thing is basically built of mold.

There are no tower system requirements for CAT II ILS.

They might have a new lighting control panel, but all the systems are associated with the runway.

construction starts in Nov and should take 3 years to complete. Maybe the new tower will have the same design as the old one? wishful thinking!

What construction will be taking place? What are they going to do with the CTB?
