AIY To Close Tomorrow

Sat Sep 30, 2006 5:55 am

The city finally won... Bader Field, the first airfield to be termed an "airport" will officially be closed for good on Sept. 30th. It's really a shame, there is so much history there, which will be replaced by condo's or some crap like that

I hope the link works

This is a common problem with small airports throughout the USA, if near recently developed areas. When casino gambling was allowed in Atlantic City in 1978 and as it developed into the 1980's, the demand for housing for it's workers and others who want to live near it pushed out other available land. That Brader Field is so close to Atlantic City, and too close for the NIMBY's, did seal it's fate. Let us hope that some memorial will be place there and a significant amount of the development will be for affordable housing for the lower working class people and seniors with limited incomes, pensions and retirement savings.

Don't count on that. With the property being right on the water, whatever is built there will not be affordable. I expect it will be commercial of some sort, not housing.
