Aer Lingus To Leave Oneworld On April 1st

Sat Sep 30, 2006 11:21 pm

Aer Lingus has confirmed that it will be leaving the oneworld alliance on the 1st of April 2007.

The Dublin based airline will cease with all involvement with other oneworld airlines on the 31st March 2007.

Aer Lingus announced in March that it would leave the alliance as its stragedy had changed and it did not feature an Alliance.

Three new members will join soon; Malev, Japan Airlines and Royal Jordanian!

Sad to see EI leave the alliance  Sad

Do you guys think EI leaving the alliance is a bad or good move?

Will EI continue to codeshare with certain airlines such as BA?

What does the future hold for EI?

Note that this confirmation was annouced yesterday on the 29th September  Smile

I think that it is a bad move. That closes many options for EI's customers. Could this be a move to possibly switch alliances down the road? If EI feels this will help, all power to them.

I can't say this news has surprised me, Aer Lingus are going down the LCC road to try and counter Ryanair. But I think not being in OneWorld could be a bad move for their long haul traffic, especially those connecting through DUB from Europe to America.

What I am surprised at is that you say Malev is going to join OneWorld, I hadn't heard that news before, I thought they were firmly part of SkyTeam?

I must say, in a sense, it doesn't really surprise me; but as others have said; in the future, I think it could be a very bad move for them.

Hi everyone.

I, for one, will miss them as a part of oneworld.

Having flown a seamless ORD-DUB-SNN-DUB-ORD itinerary this past summer, with the first four segments on EI and the final segment on AA, I found the experience very positive. In fact, due to weather, our originally-planned BOS-SNN segment on AA was delayed and we were confidently re-booked on EI.

I like IE for the people, and, for the superb livery of its aircraft!

However, I must assume that the management team at EI knows more than I do about the future profitability and success of the airline - thus - while sad to see, changes such as these are a part of prudent business planning.

I do hope that EI remains as a player at ORD so that I can plan future trips aboard their comfortable and colorful A330s.

Best wishes to EI and to the wonderful people of Ireland.

God bless -

Well, I for one can say, I'll miss seeing the OW logo on the side of their aircraft. Since they claim that the "alliance model" is not what they're working towards a this point in time, I guess it's the right thing for them then. I just hope it works for them!  confused

It seems they are trying to go more of the low cost way. I think most of the low cost carriers have started out as that. It seems that any carriers who have tried to re-invent themselves as an LCC have an extremely hard time doing so. I would say especially in Europe with competitors like Ryanair and EasyJet as well as the evergrowing arena of Euro LCCs. Best of luck to EI.  worried

Will EI still cooperate with BA on the DUB-LHR route? Or are they cutting ties there too? If so, the competition could get even more fierce.

all involvement ?not necessarily - they will cease to be part of OW - but as per the link you provided they will try to keep some one-on-one relationships going - my guess would be with AA and BA as they make the most sense for EIs network

It is in talks with some other members of oneworld about maintaining some frequent flyer links with them on a one-on-one basis from then. Details will be announced by the individual airlines concerned if and when agreements are reached

Aer Lingus will keep links with BA and AA. They have started flights to DXB and are doing very well and may start code-shares with EK. They were part privatised this week and are now looking at new aircraft (A350/787/777) a new long-haul product both in Biz and Economy is expected sometime next year.
Things are looking up for EI even with FR after them.

It's good because they don't offer European business class. It's bad because they're the only airline between Dublin and London Heathrow, and I use them all the time to connect with BA flights to the rest of the world.

Qantas are also keeping involvement with Aer Lingus. About two months ago I e-mailed QF and was told that Aer Lingus would still be a part of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program after they left oneworld.
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

While unfortunate, this was to be expected. Aer Lingus was always the smallest and least consequential member of the alliance, and this shouldn't hurt the grouping too much, because as others have stated, many of the carriers will keep bilateral links with Aer Lingus and just about all the airports Aer Lingus serves are served by other alliance members.

Oh well, about time, we all expected it, no great loss to One World. Will BA/EI continue connections on the LHR/DUB rotations?

BMI serve the route (albeit badly at times) and they still have Business Class

I think we could see it coming from a long time ago...

... They're a low-fares national carrier. Do you see FR in an alliance?

Thanks - yeap I checked as well, you can earn miles and spend miles with Malev, which is why I thought they were actually part of it too. Hopefully the miles option will still be available next spring, I was planning to use Malev and partners to fly to China.

OW was getting more from EI then EI was getting from OW, it's a good move on EI's part and yes they will keep relationships with various airlines in the future. This has been known about for a while I guess there was no firm date set though.

EI was certainly One world's weakest link.... i don't think their departure will affect OW as much
