DL & US Hangars @ TPA

Sun Oct 01, 2006 2:04 am

Does anyone have any info on the DL and US hangars at TPA. I've only been down here a few weeks, and all that I've been able to gather on them is that they haven't been used in quite some time. I know that someone told me that the employees at one of them came into work on Thanksgiving and were told that they no longer had jobs. Anyone have anything else, or if there's any plans for another carrier to take them over?
United 717 heavy, you're facing the wrong way. Any chance you can powerback to get off of my deice pad?

DL closed theirs awhile back. According to Tony Charaf, DL's Sr VP of TechOps, when asked by employees about the future of TPA, his reply was......"Tampa's not even on the radar". It wasn't less than a month later and it was closed. Great guy that headhunter........they moved alot of DFW guys to TPA after closing DFW, then about 3 months later they had to move again. And they wonder why morale is low and nobody trusts management. Charaf is also the guy that gutted DL's heavy maintenance and has changed contractors 3 times in a little over a year...........great guy and solid manager.

Welcome to the neighborhood! I'm not aware of any plans for the use of the two hangers. Got to go inside both on a tour once--they look small from the terminal...they're huge...think it was US Air's that had three good-sized aircraft inside, with room to spare..

He was out in SLC recently. He would answer just about every question with I have the numbers/info you're looking for I just won't tell you because it might not work out the way we've planned. Then he keeps telling us to buy into the "plan", the same one he won't tell us about. Without a doubt, by far the most ridiculous, absolute waste of time meeting I've ever been to at Delta. I wouldn't trust the guy to manage the making of my coffee let alone the TOC.

So, he tells you and then...possibly for business reasons...the game plan changes and he is a bad guy.

So now he tells you that it might not work out so he won't say, and he is still a bad guy for doing the opposite of what he is being criticized for above.

Damned if he does. Damned if he doesn't.

There was an article in one of the newspapers a time ago that the layed off machinists were trying to form some sort of company themselves to do outsource maintainance. They wanted seed money from the government, but it was balking because their startup finances were weak. Apparently, nothing came of that initiative.

The status of a station with a few hundred employees DOES NOT go from "not even on the radar" meaning no cuts are planned to being shut down in less than 30 days. He had to have known when he made that statement that it was going to happen. If for some reason he didn't know, then he should have explained why he didn't and the exact circumstances for why events transpired as they did. He did neither.

A good honest manager never finds himself in the predicament you mention because he knows how to explain to those underneath him what he is doing without putting himself in a corner. He respects those underneath him and trusts them to be able to handle the truth. We all realize that mistakes happen and can accept that as long as those responsible are held accountable. That's the way it us for us front line employees, it should be no different for managers.

The bottom line is that the guy won't be truthful with us. I understand that there are non-disclosure statements and all that. But when our local managers met with COO Jim Whitehurst he laid it all out to them and they relayed it back to us. Charaf wouldn't throw us even the smallest bone to latch on to because he won't tell us anything without lying. He chooses to keep us in the dark so he doesn't have to answer for his lies. Oh how I wish we had Valeika back and upper management that would support his vision of Delta Tech Ops.

Question: now that Delta has shuttered DFW and TPA, is it still doing any of its overhaul MX in-house at the main ATL TOC? Or is all overhaul being outsourced? And if Delta is outsourcing heavy MX, what are they doing at the ATL TOC?

Hey now, US Airways closed its TPA heavy maintenance hangar on November 26, 2002, which I'll have you know was two full days before Thanksgiving.  thumbsdown   thumbsdown

While the company would no doubt have closed it anyway, word is that they intentionally picked the cruel timing because the TPA mechanics had voted strongly against the September 2002 round of concessions.  thumbsdown   thumbsdown

The company literally sent in security goons in the middle of the night without warning to escort all the employees off the property and to prevent anyone else from entering the premises.  thumbsdown   thumbsdown

And in their zeal to give the employees no notice, the company violated the W.A.R.N. Act and incurred who-knows-how-much in penalties. (Good luck getting a straight answer from US on just how much it cost them.)

US rejected the lease on the TPA facility (after defaulting on it) during the first bankruptcy, and no longer has any interest in the property.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

The DL employees no one? I'm surprised. I thought they still did SOME form of work over there. Come to think of it, I haven't seen those doors open for a while.

But the fares are kept low...how dare those greedy mechanics keep people safe.

The DL hangar in TPA usually has one or two DL planes inside of it.. meanwhile, the US one is usually used for the HCAA. One of the doors are usually opened

All overhauls have been outsourced.

767 Air Canada YVR
757 Timco LCQ
MD88/90 Aeromexico GDL, Timco LCQ, and AAR in OKC

I'm not sure of the 738 and 777 fleets.

ATL TOC does mainly non-routine and routine mtc. that takes 5 days or less.

We did a PSV-8 in the hangar before I left. I was told that it was equivalent to an HMV-1. 777 heavy PSV's are coming up shortly......

What's going on with the DL hanger in CVG? About a year ago, I saw an American Eagle ERJ in the hanger.

Now that I think of it, I have never seen a DL jet in the hanger while connecting in CVG then again I never connect late at night.

"What line stations are left?"

PDX and SAN still have AMT's there on temp duty. Not sure if the other "closed" stations still have AMT's or not.

Agree with the others about TT. He has destroyed Tech Ops and the quality of the mtc and I believe is willing to accept lower quality and higher risk to save a buck.

Time to bail out.

Sorry to hear that, more quality destroyed by pencil pushers...not only would Woolman be sick to see what's happening,so would Bob Six,C.R. Smith,Pat Patterson and allthe others that struggled in the early years.

I'm not 100% sure but when I was on an out of town trip to SAN a few weeks ago they told me that the two mechanics left would be gone "in a few days".
PHX was the same way. We've had two guys that are stationed here (SLC) do TDY there, one for a year and the other over this summer but there is no one there now. We've also had one guy here go on TDY to DFW over the summer.

The PDX and SAN temp guys are still tdy in PDX and SAN.

SFO also had some tdy, for "some" reason nobody wanted to recall there. They finally hired some people off the street.
