Kalitta Air - Any Plans For 744F's In The Future?

Sun Oct 01, 2006 6:16 am

Does anyone know if Kalitta Air plans on aquiring any 747-400F's in the future? Is there any reason for them to add a few to the fleet at this point?

Dont the B744 fitting Kalitta's business model for quite a long time.

In general Kalitta is a charter operator with hap-hazard aircraft utilization. They do have some psedu scheduled type work to Asia, Hawaii and Europe however not to the point of keeping up the high utilization a -400 needs to pay for itself.

Kalitta has done well for itself by purchasing some quite old/high time classics. The higher ownership cost of the -400s would change the entire economics the operation and would not fit in until the day cost of the -400s drops significantly.

Yes they are. But remember a new aircraft takes a lot of flying to pay for it. So if they do not have the utilization a high cost airplane will still have to be paid for even if it is not flying. While an old airplane may cost more to fly it does not cost much to sit when not needed.

If Kalitta is going to get 744s, they will be converted from pax aircraft not new builds. Most of Kalitta's fleet is made up of converted pax aircraft and they only have 3 747s with the nose door: N704CK, N705CK, and N706CK.
