AA New Biz Class

Sun Oct 01, 2006 5:31 pm

Has AA installed more new biz class seats on their 767? I wonder if MIA-GRU or MIA-GIG will have any of the new seats by december.

Thanks,
Tony

well.....the aircraft are for sure being overhauled as we speak. I'm not sure how many will be complete by Dec. though, or what routes they will deploy them on. A/C routing can change so much from day to day. I can say that u may see one by December. (my wife is my AA employee resource)

Cheers

By December, AA will have only one -- at most, two -- 767-300s with the new Business Class, so the odds are you won't have it on your flights. They are flying around a single plane for a few months to gauge reaction from customer sand employees before they roll out the new cabin across the entire 767-300 fleet. However, anything is possible as the planes have been rotating throughout the entire AA system since they were put into service a few months back.

AA Already has one, the second is being refurbished as we type, and they each take 2-3 weeks to do, so that mean they should have at least 4 or 5 with the new seats. I went to a presentation for it last week in New York and was actually pretty impressed.

The seat has a few more functions than most lie-flat seats - such as sliding forward and backwards. It felt a little bit cramped, but when put into the bed position, it was very comfortable. I've recently flown SQ spacebed, AF, LX, and LH in business class, and AA's seat felt the most comfortable in bed mode. These seats were for the 763s, so they are a bit thin - I wonder what they would be like for the 777. Having the armrests fold down and the large deviders helped imporve seat width in bed mode though.

Still, it's a shame that it is going to take them SOOO long to refurbish their aircraft with a second generation seat.

The portable entertainment devices seem

Sorry, the Portable entertainment devices are a little like a laptop, but fit nicely in the seat in front, so they are perfectly acceptable. I like the fact that they are interchangeable, so if one is broken, they can replace it without having to change seats. I do think that in seat systems are a little classier, but these are a good alternative.

And the Bose Q3s are excellent. Why other airlines - like SQ, BA, CX, etc don't also use these headphones. They seem to be the best out there.

I liked the "old" biz class. Kick back in a Lay-Z-Boy type of recliner, a cup of warmed over mixed nuts, a beer and snooze time.

But I'm looking forward to see if actual comfort improves, the Lay-Z-Boy concept has sold a lot of chairs over the years, where do you spend your NFL Sundays? Plus I wasn't stuffed into a BA type coffin.

Anyway, anything is better then cattle class, I'd rather have a sleeping bag in cargo then stuffed into the back.

I just don't understand why AA is WASTING 100 million+ to install seats only for their current customers' enjoyment. I don't know how this new seat would possibly steal away people from BA's CW which they are about to REPLACE, or VS. Other airlines like CX are already replacing their seats that are similar due to COMPLAINTS OF THE ANGLE while other airlines like UA are going to put in new seats that are on par with the top of the industry, like BA and VS (or so I've heard). What do you all think?

AA's goal is not to steal premium customers from the likes of BA, CX, etc. Their intention is to retain the premium customers they already have. And a huge component of that, which many people overlook, is that upgrades are immensely valuable to premium frequent flyers.

AA could have gone to BA, CX, etc. route and installed lie-flat seats in Business Class, but that would have had two adverse financial/market effects on their product and economics:

1) it would have eaten into the unit revenue they derive on their First Class cabin on 3-class 777s to ultra-premium markets (LHR, FRA, NRT, GRU, EZE, DEL, PVG, etc.); AA doesn't need nor want to canabalize the very profitable demand they already get for their First Class product in select markets by even further closing the gap between First and Business in many customers' minds.

2) it would have required AA to sacrafice capacity in the J cabin which would have had a detremental impact on AA's bottom line because in many markets, AA is already selling out the J cabin on the 2-class 767s, and cutting the number of seats would deprive AA of tons of high-value revenue, and it would also piss off many AA flyers who want upgrades on long flights and who, given the choice between a semi-lie-flat seat with a high upgrade propability and a fully-flat seat they have no chance of ever upgrading into, will happily choose the former.

checkmark  I couldn't have said it better! Not only AA but all N. American flag carriers have a very poor product.

I have flown in both versions off AA's 777 fleet and I am not impressed. There first class product can't compare to BA/VS.

I think its great that they are trying to upgrade there product, however they will have to go back to the tables with this.

ok, just so we're clear on this, I'm not talking so much about level of service or ammenities offered.........just about the seat itself. You hardly have any space to move in the VS seat...other than sit up/lay down or in-between(Not that it's it's not a comfortable seat....please don't twist my words). I just think the flagship suite has a lot more room than VS and BA and u can even turn the seat to have dinner or talk with others! Great concept I think.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference. The flagship suite is nice, but if you look at what others have to offer, I don't know.

Luckily US-based airlines are finally spending $$ on their premium cabins.

AA -> New J Class lie-flat-at-an-angle seats.

UA -> rumored new J Class seats

CO -> just installed newer seats on the 777.

DL -> new lie-flat (HORIZONTAL) coming in 1Q08.
Some see lines, others see between the lines.

The problem with this argument is that VS is BUSINESS CLASS and the Flagship Suite is FIRST CLASS. Of course AA's seat "should" be better and yet some will argue they would actually prefer VS's seat. Keep in mind, too, that the VS seat can be 7000 dollars cheaper!

OK....I knew this would happen in any case! AGAIN......I guess I should have been even more specific than I was. Within this subject arena, I am apeaking only of the seat itself and not of....service level, ammenities offered OR price. This thread began as a conversation about J class seats and grew. I just responded to a post about AAs F class seat.....with my opinion.....nothing more and nothing less.
