Possible Swiss Expansion...?

Mon Oct 02, 2006 5:00 am

Hello,
It may have been disscussed, so if so please direct me to a thread aboout it, but with Swiss getting a few a/c soon, that is a lot of extra capacity for them, will they be expanding, on routes already operated or even new routes?
Wow, that was a long sentence Smile

So, they are getting the last 2 of LH's 332's, 1 343 from AC and 1 320 and 2 321s from TK.

That is a lot of new capacity, no?

So, are some 32X leaving, ending leases, retiring, or is this expansion. Same for the Heavies.

Thanks for any replies.

I saw a reply somewhere (just searched, couldn't find it, sorry) that the 320 and 321s might be to replace the Swiss Sun 320 and 321s that are coming to the end of their leases. Don't know about the 340 but the 330s are definitely coming.

One thing might be to replace the Hapag Air A300 on the African routes.

I think that it was recently discussed that LX will receive some new A/C but will only add frequency not new routes, as the groth is some 7-8 percent already and more would not be good anymore.

There were talks about the AC 343´s and LX.....

The additional widebody capacity which is to come online with the arrival of the two ex Sabena A332s from Lufthansa will be used to replace the A300 which is currently plying the East and West African sectors and to reinforce frequencies to existing longhaul destinations. I guess that smartest move by LX would be to prioritize the establishment of daily services to its core longhaul destinations before embarking on the risky venture of opening new longhaul gateways, although I believe that a reentry in the China market can't be too far away.

ZRH-NBO to increase from 3 x weekly to 5 x weekly

http://allafrica.com/stories/200610020808.html

...Swiss International Airlines has announced plans to increase its flights from Zurich to Nairobi by the start of December due to increasing tourism passengers.

The airline will now have five flights instead of the previous three flights. The new flights will be using an Airbus A330, which is set to resume operating to Nairobi with effect from October 31. The carrier had leased an aircraft from Hapag Lloyd to operate on the Nairobi route because of a delay in acquiring additional A330 aircrafts, the airline's Nairobi General Manager, Mr Yves-Alain Yersin, says.

"Effective from December 2, we will operate 2 additional flights between Zurich and East Africa, bringing the total to five flights weekly," ...

it appears I was wrong. I was on LX yesterday and the inflight magazine said that the 3 Airbii are actually coming in the spring to strengthen the fleet.

Excellent news

Swiss seems to be getting the left overs from other parts of the Lufthansa/Star Alliance farternity. JFK could use a third flight from Zurich, kust as the "old" Swissair had before it became"SWISS".

Not a smart move for now, seeing as they have just recently started their second JFK run, so I don't see them adding a third daily in the near future. An expansion on the lucrative African routes (like ZRH-NBO as staded above) seems more likely.

And I don't see them returning to China either, as Swissair's ZRH-PEK-PVG route never made money.
