Four A380's In 2007 - For Who?

Tue Oct 03, 2006 1:55 am

Who will be taking delivery of the four A380's Airbus is rumored to be delivering in '07. I am sure Singapore is one airline, who, if any, are the others?

I bet all four are for SIA. I don't know for sure how Airbus works, but UA received seven 777s before anyone else received any. UA received five 767s before anyone received any. With the 747 and 757, it wasn't quite as long for the second customer, but the first customer received their first four within about a month in each case.

This is necessary to ensure a full rotational schedule. After all, if SIA received one or two A380s and didn't have their third and fourth ones until the next year, it would make things very dicey for them.

According to Flight International as of June, 6 of the 8 "production" A388s which had been assembled were destined for SQ.

At this point, it looks like EY will be the first birds ready for delivery - MSN002, MSN004 and MSN007 are being used for flight-test and certification, I believe.

However, Airbus may be contractually bound to deliver the first birds to SQ - MSN003, MSN005 and MSN006.

The talk of a "ceremonial delivery" may be the way to get around this. Fly MSN003, MSN005 or MSN006 to SIN, snap some pics, then send her back to TLS. That way, the first A380 has been "delivered" per contract and then then can send EY her birds.

It's been stated before the first 4 are going to be delivered to SQ. This may be changed now, but if it is I expect SQ to be EXTREMELY pissed off. They've had marketting campaigns and other major costs around being first with the 380.

I think SQ and EK are the top priorities for obvious reasons for Airbus. I think most everyone else is SOL.
I don't care what you think of my opinion. It's my opinion, so have a nice day :)

Doubtful. MSN004, 002, 007, 009 will require considerable refurbishment/refit (MSN009 will need to be re-engined) before they can be delivered to EY. Prior to the second program delay, MSN007 was scheduled to be refitted with GP engines once the route-proving flights with the RR engines had been completed. I'm not sure if this remains part of the flight-test plan anymore?

IIRC, they were supposed to be delivered in 2007 under the original delivery plan, I guess they will be delivered in 2008 now, and as Leelaw said, they will have to undergo a considerable refurbishment.

Are the planes destined for EY currently flying with a different interior then EY intends to use?

While there may be a "ceremonial" delivery of the first SQ 380 before the end of the year, it will only be for a photo op. I have a feeling that SQ will pass on paying any moines due at "delivery".

From what I can tell, Airbus is working on the wiring for the SQ planes, leaving wiring challenges on other airline orders on hold until SQ is taken care of. Depending on the amount of variation from standard wiring the other airlines might have a fairly long wait for their planes.
