RUMOR: AirOne(AP) Considering Service To USA In 07

Tue Oct 03, 2006 3:11 am

According to an Italian Aviation website, Italian carrier AirOne (AP) is considering scheduled service from Italy to at least two US destinations starting in 2007 with A340 aircraft acquired from other Star members (AP is a Star associate I believe) This news was provided today on the sidelines of a press conference in Turin by AP's Commericlal Director, Giorgio De Roni. Destinations may include Star hubs like: IAD, LAX, ORD and DEN, along with one possible South American Destination.

Well, that basically leaves AC and possibly OS as the sources for A340-300s. Neither LH, LX, SK, TP are known to be willing to release long-haul equipment at the moment. Most of them are even seeking more frames... It appears that they more or less want to go head-on with Alitalia, flying from FCO to their long-haul destinations.

There have been rumors of Air One expanding internationally for a number of years. However, most of the talk was centered on Asia, and Africa. Namely in Mauritius, Mombasa, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Maldives, Phuket, and Penang. However, recently, of course I brushed off the rumors of North America. In any case the rumors which were heard from associates at an Italian travel firm based in Northern Italy included San Francisco and Washington. IAD. Namely from Rome, however Malpensa was brushed aside due to Alitalia's hub centric North American routes from MXP. In any case this is very interesting news, also the aircraft mentioned was A343, or A333.

Well I guess this shatters the old saying that Travel Agent and Flight Attendants talk should be taken with a grain of salt.

It seems not only "AP is considering", but it's quite sure they will fly long haul in 2007 (in Italian it's reported "will" not "could"). According to what it's written in the thread it seems AP is looking at codesharing with UA to connect FCO (and Italy through it) to UA main hubs. In South America many people speak about GRU.

Wasn't Air One supposed to fly to MCO back in 2004 but that never panned out? I thought it was supposed to be with an A330 also.

I suppose that was eurofly (GJ) as charter operations, surely not AP.

Theres a lot of talk in recent days in the Italian press and govt officials an about AZ re-concentrating at FCO again.

I though Air One were currently considering either joining Star as a full or associate member but aren't presently a part of the alliance

I would be the first to welcome them to MIA. I know it's not a star alliance hub, but we sure could use a nonstop MIA-FCO. MIA is a top station for AZ in North America, and they get a pretty penny for their nonstop MXP flight. With Costa Cruise lines expanding here in South Florida, all I can say is benvenuti. There has to be demand. Darn I wish UA had not dismantled their mini hub here. Could have been perfect feed. Unlike most northern cities that have direct service to FCO, we don't have any.

Now AP is only main partner of Lufthansa but with many other partnerships with Star All. members or associated (like Croatia, Adria, US Air, Air Canada, Aegean, TAP, SAS)
