Which Is The Best US Airline?

Mon Jul 03, 2000 2:47 am

I will be travelling to the US in the near future and hope to travel around the country. Can anyone advise me on the best airline to use for, reliability, punctuality, quality of service and reasonable fares? I would also like to know which US airport has the best viewing facilities.

Definitely American. The best aircraft, service for a US airline, and many other reasons. Second, go with USAirways, TWA, or Continental.

Yes, I am biased, but.....

Southwest is by far the best domestic airline.

If you don't believe me, just take a look at the official complaint statistics filed with the United States Department of Transportation.

Southwest has had the lowest complaint rate, by far (the next best airline's numbers are 4 or 5 times higher that of Southwest's) every year for the last 26 years since the DOT has comiled this information.

Southwest has made a profit for 27 consecutive years. (since 1973). This sort of suggests that they know how to keep their clientele happy as well as be able to purchase a newish and well maintained fleet.

They were listed by Consumer Report magazine as as offering a "low fare, high value" product.

Plus their website is easy to use and gets you double FF credit.

One interjection concerning Southwest...

When people don't expect much, they aren't going to complain. I think that's the root of their low complaint rate. Southwest is good in that they fairly consistently deliver on their promise: transportation and nothing else. In some situations (last minute fares in select markets) they are a good value; in most situations, however, advanced purchase fares can be had just as inexpensively on other airlines as on Southwest. Long story short, will you get what you expect out of, and therefore be satisfied with Southwest? Yes, almost definitely. Will you enjoy your flight on Southwest as much as you would have enjoyed another airline? Probably not. Especially if travelling on a longer itinerary, Southwest's lack of meals, entertainment, and preassigned seating would deteriorate their appeal, even while they deliver on their promise 100%, whereas receiving these luxuries on other airlines would make them more appealing, even if they do not fully live up to the passenger's expectations.

Midwest Express, hands down. First-class seats and service for the same fare you'll pay on other airlines! Although their route network is smaller than the majors, they serve almost all major US cities via MKE, OMA, MCI and IND.
If you can't fly them, fly Southwest. Although the service is minimal (but the tix are cheap!!! ), their planes are clean and reliable and their people are really friendly and a lot of fun to fly with! I've never had a bad flight on either of these airlines, and both treat you like a human being, a rarity in the US airline industry!
Enjoy your trip!
Cheers,
Ryan

It depends what region of the country you'll be in as to what the best is. On the east coast through some of the midwest, I try for AirTran. If heading into the heart of the midwest, I go for TWA. Cross-country, I almost always take US or DL.
My overall preference has to be DL, with CO close behind. I avoid UA and AA at all costs- they've gotten so big that they lost all sense of passenger comfort along the way.
If you want to fly on some classic jets that you don't see around Europe anymore (DC-9-10, 727), fly with Northwest and Midwest Express. Midwest Express has excellent seating and food, and NW uses so many of the older planes that you'll more than likely get one. If you'll be in DFW, make a point of getting on a Legend Airlines a/c (if you can afford it!). A truly classic experience.

I would say both Delta and United. Continental is not too bad either.

Just my opinion, but I see you have bought into the"Southwest has a low complaint rate because their passengers do not expect much" hook, line, and sinker.

A lot of other airline executives like to think that and then they wake up and find that SW is carrying a whole lot of the passengers they used to carry, to include business travelers.

I won't argue about entertainment or meals...however seeing as how much travel in the United States is of 3 1/2 hrs or less in duration...can you tell me how many airlines offer entertainment? I just got off a 3 hr trip on AA from ORF to DFW and the most entertaining thing I saw was a rude flight attendant.

The baseline truth, as I see it...is that Southwest does the basics very, very well. Decent prices, frequent schedules, and (believe it or not) a lot of nonstop flights from point A to point B that don't force you to connect at a hub.

Bersides, as we all know....what is really important is an airline's paint scheme. And nobody will argue that Southwest's paint scheme isn't the prettiest...ROFL

Take care

It seems that American is a strong contender. Anyone care to let me know which airports have the best viewing facilities?

Delta is the best.

I noticed that you live outside the US, this lets you qualify for 2 types of packages. Discover America and Visit USA. These rates are based on about a 2 month maximum visit and can be purchased as open coupons or set flight day sets. You must purchase your international ticket first then show your travel agent proof of living outside the US.

Both are very flexible and allow you to change your routing and flight days.

Enjoy the US!!

I'm not saying that Southwest deserve to have more complaints; they don't. They deliver on their promise, and that makes passengers happy. Airlines that promise the most wonderful five hours of your life generally don't deliver on their promise, and so it is understandable that their passengers are going to complain. I, for one, usually take domestic trips of over 3 1/2 hours, my most frequent route being ORD-SAN. On this route, American offers movies on 737 flights; I believe United shows movies on all ORD-SAN flights. I get dinner when I'm heading home from school, something WN wouldn't give me. I'm not saying they're bad, I'm not saying that they deserve more complaints, I'm just saying that they're different; that they provide a different travel experience.

BTW, as for their "low fares", they do lower the average fare in the markets they serve, and they do offer lower fares than were generally available before they entered the market. More often than not, however, the same fare can be had on a full service carrier if you are not buying a last minute ticket.

You would better take the bus than flying any US Airline.
I have made a lot of experiences with different American airlines and I must admit that you are better off with the Greyhound or the train.

I am surprised no one has said CO for their first choice. I have had most great experiences with them. The only bad expieriences I had was in 1998 when I first started flying them. They have real nice flight attendants, they have good food for the most part and their flights are usually ontime. The latest I have been is 15 mins. If I were you I would definitly give CO a try. For my second choice I would pick AA, they have excellent food and for the most part they are kind the only downside to them is connecting in Dallas, every time I have flown them I have no time to do anything their connection times are so close together.
