Dash 8 Delta Connection

Wed Oct 04, 2006 1:19 pm

Has any of you guys flown the Delta Connection Dash 8? How is this plane? Quiet? Noisy? Safe?

I'm flying this thursday from ORF to JFK.

Thanks,
Tony

Flown in a few of Mesa's dash-8-2's out west, they aren't Q versions so the ride is probably very similar.

For the small size, the comfort (in terms of the way it seems to fly) is actually pretty close to the way a larger airliner would fly.

Quiet: Not as much, the props are right out the windows so it is just a little bit louder but not uncomfortably so.

Safe: ...Duh?
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

I haven't flown on any of the Delta Connection flights with Freedom Air on the Dash-8's yet, but I'm scheduled to fly on one PWM-JFK on my way to TXL this Saturday.

I have flown on US Airways and NW Airlink (back in the day) with Dash-8's though and found them more spacious than other props I've been on. It's been a while since I've flown a commuter flight on a prop though, so I opted for the DL flight over B6 for this trip simply to get on a turbo-prop while I still can.

Personally, I feel that flying on the props feels a lot more like real flying than on a jet cruising at high altitude. You cruise a lot lower and the views are always spectacular! Throw in some weather, bumps and chop and that's my idea of a good time. You feel more connected to the aircraft in flight when it's a smaller plane. And noise...Good, the more the better. Planes are suppose to be loud!

I have flown a fair bit on the Qantas Link Dash8s I love em, they are great on the T/O roll quick to accelerate, great views with the high wing.

Totally agree. A great little A/C....

If the -8 is anything like the ATR42, then it'll probably exceed your expectations. I found the Continental Express "JetLink" ATR42 to be spacious and quiet. Perhaps a little loud on takeoff, but once the props got set to cruise rpm then it wasn't bad at all.

Not a bad ride at all,i did the BWI-JFK run a little bit ago and it was fine.A little loud on takeoff but once we got going all was good. The service was nice and even though it was full i didn't feel too cramped.

The only thing was a little ground/taxi delay at JFK,but i'm sure most of us expect that in the evening.Have a great trip and tell us how it went.

Great picture Bh. It looks awesome in the DL livery. I have seen them at JFK but I have not had the pleasure yet of flying in one.

On behalf of Delta employees we thank- you for your business.

I want to know are the Freedom Dash 8's the only ones with out APU's are all of them like that.

Sucks for you, cross your fingers that you leave on the day you're supposed to. Freedom sucks! Good luck!

I can't imagine flying that thingin the summer with no APU.

As far as the Dash being safe, the answer is VERY safe. It was built to be abused.

I don't think Island Air has APUs either. QX does, and Piedmont carries an MEL'd one along for ballast.

I only paid $64 with Taxes included for the PWM-JFK leg, so you're welcome for my business, but I'm sure DL is making no revenue from my seat with those fares! Go figure, B6 came out to $84 O/W with taxes included! So I'll be trying them on the way back to PWM from JFK next month.

Lets see.... 20 year old noisey, cramped, slow, dirty Dash-8 or brand new, roomy, clean Embraer 190 with Direct TV and XM Radio....I'll pay the extra $20.

Like I said, I'd prefer the prop. It's something different and you get to fly on A320's all the time these days, so why not? A320's and 737's get boring after a while, and flying on the smaller props feels more like the true flying experience I get when I fly light general aviation aircraft

Also, I've flown on a lot of old birds with the majors, LCC carriers, and Regional Airlines in the U.S. and I've yet to fly on a plane that I could genuinely consider dirty. Yellowed walls, blue-juice toilets, musky smell and worn or faded seats don't equate to dirty to me. Just a working aircraft. Hell, I've found ABC gum stuck under my seat on almost brand new jet airliners.
Oh, and sometimes on the props you get that extra whiff of Jet-A drifting through the cabin while you're still on the ramp or taxing/holding behind other aircraft and I just love the smell of jet fuel in the morning!

B6 is still flying the A320 to PWM until the end of the month, so I'll return with them after connecting from a DL flight from TXL.

These 2 Island Air Dash 8's do and of course thier Q400 did, to bad they parked it.

I have flown on a ridiculously high number of Dash8 flights being from the caribbean. They are nice props, my favourtite actually. Comfortable, and spacious as compared to other props. The non Q series aren't very quiet, but most props aren't. However I find the noise of a Dash 8 is alot more agreeable than other props like the ATR and Saab. The Q is great, more noticeably quiet after takeoff. Dash 8s are fantastic.

Have a good flight.

I almost fell out of my chair with that one. I was on one yesterday for about 7 hours that wasn't MEL'd but was just as useless.

just arrived in JFK from ORF flying the Dash 8. I thought it was a great ride. The seats though, never seen harder. Comfort is very bad.

Also, being from Brazil it was nice to see TAM here and lots of jet blue new embraers  Smile

Thank you all for sharing the info on the Dash 8
