AZ Has FCO-LAX And FCO-YUL In Its Sights For 2007

Fri Oct 06, 2006 7:18 am

According to Italian daily Sole24Ore (its a paid subscription site, so I couldnt link the article), Alitalia has its sights on reopening FCO-LAX and FCO-YUL in 2007. This coincides with rumors AZ is looking to acquire 4-5 777's to boost its long haul fleet. There is also talk AZ is going to realign its hubs once again with a new emphasis on FCO.

Heres some free links on the story:

News site for Italians Overseas, with regard to FCO-YUL.

The information has been available publically on the following sight for a number of months:

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alitalia

"A fine settembre Cimoli elabora un nuovo Piano Industriale 2006-2008, che deve però essere approvato dal governo. Secondo alcune indiscrezioni i nuovi punti sarebbero:

Apertura di nuove rotte intercontinetali tra cui Los Angeles e Montreal
Chiusura della rotta Milano-Washigton
Entrata in servizio di nuovi aerei a lungo e medio raggio dal 2007
Aprire nuove mini basi come quella di Venezia ed alcune affidarle a VolareWeb (la compagnia low cost del gruppo Alitalia)
Riconfigurazione a partire da ottobre dei Boeing 767
Rafforzare la posizione di Alitalia nel mercato domestico "

In addition and as an FYI - A few more intercontinental routes will be depleated as others are resumed.. Hint.. Hint!  wink

Well MXP-IAD is ending, so thats one (767 would work for FCO-YUL) and my other guess is MXP-Osaka (Thats a 777 route that would work for FCO-LAX)

That's awesome, I've been to Montreal and noticed they have a good size Italian population. I was in Montreal a couple years back and made chit-chat with this older Italian gentleman in a Wine shop, when he found out I was an Italian American from NYC he wanted to talk about Italian immigrants in America and Canada. He gave me his family's story about immigrating to Montreal, very nice gentleman.

I hope YUL works out well for AZ, same with LAX, some other's I hope AZ will launch..

San Francisco, Philadelphia, Houston *(codeshare with CO), and figure out some way to make Washington D.C. to work.

I believe if AZ ever makes it back to LAX it will be from MXP and not FCO.
At least MXP provides higher yield business and fashion industry traffic.

However this would the the 3rd year that AZ has indicated its "returning" to LAX. One year it even managed to published schedules to only pull them at the last moment.

I'll truly believe it when I see the AZ plane land.

I truly doubt they are actually going to fly to LA anytime soon. And if they do, it will be from Milan. They've been "planning" a return to Los Angeles for a long time, and nothing has come of it. Low yield, thin market, and neither Rome or Milan are "superhubs" like Amsterdam or Paris to make up for it.

They have pulled airplanes off YYZ/BOS-FCO, and IAD-MXP.

Therefore, they have 3 airplanes in the parking lot waiting for assignment.

Hope this is true. I think LAX has the potential to make this route work.

FCO-BOS/YYZ are summer only. Are they not returning next year?

Also, MIA-MXP becomes a 772 year-round next month, so that's one less 772 to potentially use to Los Angeles.

Having grown up in Montreal, I can tell you that AZ to YUL is very smart. Canadi>n used to fly to rome from YUL and I believe AC has taken over the route (too lazy to log on to AC.ca). The interesting thing is that the Italian Canadians have really not assimilated to Quebec culture as the Italian immigrants have in NYC, NE and Toronto. There, they have become really Canadians/Americans of Italian descent (or second generation italians). In Montreal, the second generation is really Italian-canadian. They are encouraged to learn the language and even choose a partner based on the cultural roots. There still is Italian language programming on TV during evening and week end hours.

Italians are also very interested in visiting a different culture within North America that will fill those planes nicely.

I know we have spoken about this already, but I think it's a wise move for AZ. What many people don't realize is that while Miami is very seasonal for North Americans, it is not for Europeans and especially Italians who have the month off. It is hard for many Italians to take longer periods off during the year as Italian corporate culture is very dedicated to its work.

They may be trying to capitalize on Italy's superior position for Middle Eastern connections from LAX.

Would SFO ever make a comeback? It was great seeing the AZ birds there for the short period they were there, I miss seeing them around.

Summer 07 Timetable of AZ isn't correctely loaded yet. What you find now it seems to be only an extension of the previous winter one (Nov-Dec 06). So for example you find FCO-EWR with 767 instead of 777, MXP-MIA with 777 inastead of 767, MXP-EWR only 5xweek, BOS and ORD 6xweek and so on.
I think we'll see again BOS and YYZ both from MXP and FCO.

It would be great to see AZ back flying on the West Coast again. I recall the pre 9/11 service to SFO from Milano.

Osaka, has reported revenue that is equal to if not greater than Narita. However, there are certain times of the year that both Osaka and Tokyo suffer from low yields due to decreased business and increased leisure demand.

checkmark  However, keep in mind that that as is the case with Osaka and Tokyo, certain months out of the year are business oriented traffic, and others are leisure oriented traffic. Finding the balance may very well be the key. There has been talk believe it or not of operating FCO-MXP-LAX only during the peak months of the year. Freeing the other half of the year to routes that require increased capaciy when LAX is not operated such as BOM, DEL, GRU, or EZE.

Miami is an extremely important destination for Alitalia. The revenue is one of the highest in the network.

From what has been heard Alitalia is expecting a number of additional 777, and is looking at taking on additional 767 equipment. Rumors(for the small change they are worth), includind mofidfying the following routes: Newark being replaced with New York.JFK concentrated service, Boston dropping FCO, Chicago going to a FCO-MXP-ORD rotation with less frequency, GRU being extended to GIG. The rumors also abound for adding the following services: MXP-NBO(763), MXP-JED(320), MXP-RUH(320), MXP-BAH(320), MXP-KHI(763), FCO-MXP-HKG(772), FCO-MXP-IAH(772).

Remember it is Alitalia, and things can change as often as the wind.

Lax has to be served from Milan, With Armani and all the fashion in Milan bridging it to Hollywood is what makes this work. Try booking a seat during awards season...

In the case of MIA-MXP, when it was first uploaded, it was showing as a 767, and just recently it was changed to a 777. That shows something. I would not at all be surprised if it stays a 772 year-round. MIA is one of Alitalia's most profitable long-haul routes.

Too bad. That flight is always full and/or oversold year-round in both classes. Alitalia has the second highest average load factor of all airlines from MIA (after Alaska Airlines), at around 98%.

MAH is right, that MXP-IAD flight was constantly empty. and the MIA-MXP load factors are dead on, took it a few years ago, one of the worst experiences of my life...filled to the brim, no ptvs and no cd players allowed! Non ci potevo credere!
Also, given AZ's recent attempts to eliminate its two hub structure at the expense of FCO, if alitalia were to start LAX service, i'd assume its from MXP.
