Crazy Airline Website Prices!

Fri Oct 06, 2006 8:01 am

Yesterday, I booked and paid for a United Airlines round trip ticket from LAX to GIG via IAD and GRU. The return is GIG-GRU-ORD-LAX. I used two internet search engines (mobissimo and Kayak) to check for the lowest fares and was able to find a fare of $830.00 using an internet based wholesaler, which if you know anything about fares to Brazil from the US West Coast, is a pretty good price nowadays. I then tried pricing the same itinerary on UA's website and the price quoted was $1509.00!! This is for travelling next week. This begs the question, why would anyone book travel with an airlines website when the price difference is so huge?
I have assigned seats, I will accrue full mileage with UA's mileage plus and I saved $679.00 by doing a little checking online. Frankly, I'm quite shocked at the price difference!
Anyone else have similar experiences? And which air fare search engines do you use?

Just booked myself on a PHX-LAS daytrip at the end of this month... I got a fare of $117.10 on US/HP's website.

I booked exactly the same segments in our Sabre terminal and got a fare of $103.66.

I'm not shocked at all, it's what I had expected - and it's well within what I'm used to... but I've long since stopped arguing with people on here about that ever-present myth that airline websites are always cheaper.

I guess it's no surprise that I did not use the airline website for my flights. Big grin

Yes BA.com are usually cheaper than any online agent / wholesaler. Best fare for an open jam LHR-LAX/YYZ-LHR online was about £500, on BA.com it's £386. Not bad.

Finnair is not always the cheapest choice from HEL to Asia, but luckily they regulary have really good website offers:
At the moment Helsinki - Shanghai return 399 Euros.
Also seen Japanese destinations for 500e return, Delhi 385e, Dubai 470e (charter).
Last year I flew HEL-BKK-HEL for 500e.

You can say that again! I wanted a one-way MAN/HEL - on AY's website the fare was £470 and on BA's the very same flight (it's an AY flight with a BA code share) I got it for £90.

Hi Halfa

Thanks for share this info as now i'm one more looking for cheap deals to GIG from JFK.
The daily light TAM introduce to JFK will help a lot and i wish the future flight GIG-MIA could help also as demand remain very high as well as prices.

I got a great deal on American's website. $445 rt SEA-LHR. That's the first time I found something the wholesalers couldn't beat.

Aircanada.com also good: to fill the gap in my open jaw LHR-LAX/YYZ-LHR, they'll sell me a oneway from LAX to YYZ for £96, which is incredibly cheap for a five hour flight on a full service national flag carrier. And it's not cos I'm on the redeye, every flight every day in Nov is that price. So much for global warming.

I bought a oneway ticket CAE-CLT-MSY on US for $189 and change back the end of Aug. I then took the trip back (oneway) MSY-EWR-CAE on CO the end of Sept for $179. The other fares on AA, DL, US, NW were no cheaper than $300-400. Plus I booked both trips on the respected airline websites. I very frequently book on Travelcoity, Expedia, Orbits, etc. and sometimes I find better fares on the airline sites. I guess it's just when and where you look and LUCK!!

Hardly surprising given that Finnair, unlike BA, has not changed their pricing model to one-ways. You were thus probably quoted a business-class fare or an unrestricted economy fare.

Not exactly sure what change you ment here but AY do changed their pricing model a year or two ago, I have bought those new one-way tickets many times, also to MAN. Just checked 15th Nov: HEL-MAN 118 Euros, MAN-HEL 101 GBP.

Of course strange if BA and AY have so different pricing methods.

We have been planning a trip from MCI-GRU for January and most of the online fairs were $1100-$1500 (not including fees/taxes). Went through a Brazilian travel agency in NY and got it for $970 (all taxes/fees included) on DL through ATL.

From HEL you can get to HKG for around 280e return (AY) at cheapest, but of course HEL is two or three hours closer to China than London.

Mhhh, maybe they have different pricing models for different markets ? I looked up some fares from the continent where they compete with the likes of Lufthansa and KLM (no one-ways either) and it appeared to me that all pricing was based on round-trips. Maybe they have changed that for the UK market in order to remain competitive ? Just recently Lufthansa has introduced one-way domestic fares, obviously because of the competition by dba/Air Berlin, but they keep round-trip pricing on most European routes, so as always it is just a question of competition and not a dogma.

Quoting HALFA (Thread starter):
This begs the question, why would anyone book travel with an airlines website when the price difference is so huge?

- Maybe they don't want the lowest price, but require a fare with more flexibility
- If booking with a consolidator many fares don't earn FF mileage
- Many airlines such as UA have a low fare guarantee so people think the fares won't be cheaper anywhere else.
- Many airline websites offer 1,000 bonus miles for booking on their website

Of course if the fare difference is very big then I would go for the cheap fare, although only if I could ascertain in advance if the fare was FF miles earnable as a few years ago I made the mistake of booking an AA flight London - San Francisco with a consolidator and it turned out to be an O fare and I got nothing. From that day on I have always checked first and if they can't tell me the booking class I go elsewhere.

I always shop around for fares but more often than not find myself back whee I started on the airline website. They are not always cheaper but often are. With UA though one doesn't need much of an excuse to avoid united.bomb

AA.com has a "Lowest Fare Guarantee" in which, if, on the same day after you purchase a ticket for American Airlines flights on their website, if you find a lower fare anywhere online, they will refund the difference, and give you a $50 credit to use on a future booking!

Klm is not that cheap. I have been shopping for a cheap ticket from YYZ to ACC and the cheapest I got was about $1450 so I want on KLM website only to get a price of $5000 and I was shock so I called KLM reservation line to get a quote and they quote me higher than what I got on their website. Ever since the take over by Air France, I have notice price change in KLM fares and I as for BA they are somewhat cheap without the taxes but once you add the taxes it is a lot.

AA.com is one of the places I usually check for airfares. The other day I booked NAS-MIA-SFO-SYD-LAX-MIA-NAS there. The fare was about $2,000, which, for a next day departure, wasn't too bad. I think I had limited choices, as most of my usual websites don't give you next day international flights.

Anyhow, AA screwed up the credit card transaction, so the next morning at the airport, the guy at the check-in counter couldn't do much but sell me another ticket. Same flights were now $1,700.

Bottom line: Thank you, AA, for not being able to process my credit card, you saved me $300! (BTW, that ticket was paid for with the exact same credit card they couldn't process the day before.)

I've found that the little aa.com loophole whereby they charge less tax on BA flights than BA do has been closed recently, although aa.com is always a good place to look as it sometimes comes up with some interesting options.
