Will Mexicana Join Oneworld?

Sat Oct 07, 2006 9:07 am

After abandoning Star Alliance and now with code-share agreements with AA and Iberia, will Mexicana be on track to join Oneworld any time in the future?

Does anyone have inside information on this?

Thanks !!

MX is bound to join Oneworld, especially since it has been privatized. They might have had a Gentleman's agreement with Star to not join an alliance for awhile after they left.

Hola Fernando, how are you? Welcome to airliners.net. I am completely certain that you will enjoy reading the threads in this and the other forums, looking at the pictures, and posting your opinions and questions. I look forward to discussing interesting aviation matters with you.

It is not just AA and IB who codeshare with MX. It is also QF, JL and LA, which indeed suggests MX is leaning towards applying for membership. Moreover, little by little the codeshare agreements with Star Alliance carriers have been dropped, like AC, RG, NZ, etc. I am sure that the LH agreement will be dropped quite soon.

I don't know about gentlemen agreements, but I think that, at the moment, MX is very wise to not commit to oneworld. However, the discontinuation of the codeshare agreements with Star members suggests that they are maybe interested in oneworld. I support MX with the decision they make... I am sure they will be able to determine soon whether going solo with multiple partners or joining oneworld is best for them.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Certainly not in the near future, dunno if goodly or badly but certainly all these alliance's programa's have been discard from MX program so far. Codeshares seems to work better. As well as MX strategy for the next days will be very interesting, such as, increasing its fleet and destinations and continue with the battle against LCC's.

I think there is no advantage to be gained right now for MX to join OW.....they are getting the feeder traffic, have codeshares to important destinations and have other more important things to focus on. I do however believe that within 24 months, MX will join an alliance (as of now OW), once thay have completed fleet renewall/ expansion and route expansion, especially in central america and in europe/ asia!!!

Good luck to MX and would love to see you in OW!!!!!!!

PM, a couple of days ago I read in one of these forums that TAM might be leaning towards Oneworld but that doesn´t make any sense to me as they have LA.

I would love them to join Skyteam. I travel to the south very often and find it difficult to keep loyal to the alliance.

I think those passengers that value alliance benefits (elite check-in, boarding, lounge access, etc) would surely advantage from MX joining. Their FF programme is good but it is hardly valued since it only applies in MX flights

But I think LA codeshare with AM is stronger; LA shows many mexican routes operated by AM, not MX, but I think MX codesharing is working as wekk

The sense it has is to grow within Brazilian Market.

Anyway, I would love to see Mexicana under OW umbrella.

Strangely AA is not code-sharing on any MX Mexico-US flight, while on several domestic flights they do; AA code shares on legs such as MEX-GDL, or MEX-ACA.

I think TAM joining oneworld w/LAN makes perfect sense - their networks compete more in Chile-Brazil markets, but complement each other elsewhere, that is, LAN in Western South America, TAM in Eastern. It would be like saying IB shouldn't join OW because BA is a member. Check out the route network. Besides, TAM code-shares w/AA as it is. Might make a nice fit.

It applies for accrual and redemption on a number of carriers albeit with a lot of restrictions.

I usually can rely on a domestic reward with MX even within 2 days before the trip.
However on the International network can require longer.

But when it gets really really hard is when you try to redeem with the "partners" carriers.

Check the schedules again. I booked a someone a BWI-MEX for June 06 on an AA flight number (operated by MX).

Hey nzrich, thanks for the clarification. As much as I like MX and NZ being codeshare partners, I have to wonder if they will continue to be partners now that the QF codeshare agreement has become effective. Of course you could argue that the QF codeshare does not grant MX's passengers access to New Zealand, but who knows. As for the other Star Carriers, it has been mentioned here that the LH codeshare is short-lived.

I am not sure that is correct. I know they codeshare on the MEX-JFK flights. And I would not be surprised to see AA's code on MX's flights to MIA, LAX and DFW at least.

If the future of MX is uncertain when it comes to alliances, JJ is a complete enigma. They are very wise to be close to AA and AF, but I don't think there is any element at the moment that could point to JJ's interest in joining oneworld or SkyTeam soon. I would also love to see them join SkyTeam but for now it is better for them to codeshare with whoever offers them good growth opportunities. In any case, we should see JJ expanding their international route map substantially before they get serious about considering an alliance.

Personally, I regard the prospect of Mexicana joining oneworld as a matter of when, not if. It is a clearly obvious fit, and with Mexicana now deeply linked with AA, plus having strong bilateral relationships with oneworld Latin America heavy hitters LAN and Iberia, I think it's only a matter of time.

Agreed. TAM is being very smart by hedging their bets with both Air France (SkyTeam) and American (oneworld). Long-term, I think either partner, and either alliance, could hold strong promise for TAM, but it will no doubt be a difficult choice for them. The oneworld alliance would provide them with far, far greater feed and emphasis on the Latin American world, but the love-hate relationship between JJ and AA is a problem: JJ badly needs AA to feed thousands of passengers per month onto their planes in GRU and GIG, but they don't like AA stepping on their toes on the U.S.-Brazil flights. On the flip side, AA needs TAM to give them internal feed in the vast Brazilian domestic market, but has been heavily resistant to TAM infringement on the AA dominance between the U.S. and Brazil. If TAM hypothetically switched to SkyTeam, they'd lose all the AA feed and get some from Delta, albeit less feed with far fewer flights to Brazil from the U.S. An interesting powerplay either way.

AA codeshares with MX on the MIA-CUN and MIA-MEX route.

I belive MX has been formally invited to join oneworld. So now the ball is in their court.

I think AA code shares on all MX transborder flights, right? I know they also have their AA code on LAX-MEX...

Personally i dont see any problem with NZ and MX still code sharing..NZ has got some code shares in place with one world anyway like soon to be JAL even thou ANA is in star.. Also NZ is wanting to codeshare with QF between NZ and Aussie so why would it want to drop MX..If it is not broken why try to fix it..
