Liat Celebrates 50 Years.

Sun Oct 08, 2006 1:45 am

Yesterday, our regional airline LIAT, celebrated 50 years. Indeed LIAT has been around for quite some as has been her bigger sister airline BWIA. The two airlines have a very interesting history. It is only sad that though being such old airlines, things are still somewhat a mess in terms of profitability, management etc. Anyhow, Happy Birthday LIAT. Big grin Good to see that Caribbean Star has not put you out of business Big grin

Here is the LIAT i knew in my lifetime, except of course the BAC jet.  Smile

(Antigua) LIAT celebrates 50 years of serving the Caribbean.

LIAT 1970 Ltd., will be celebrating its landmark 50th anniversary in the aviation industry in a muted way due to the continued financial troubles plaguing the airline.

The celebration will be through a week of activities held in Antigua for the staff of the airlines' 19 destinations. The week begins this Saturday and ends on October 16 and over a hundred visitors are expected to visit the island during that time.

Robin Margetson, training officer in the Human Resources Department and a member of the 50th Anniversary committee, said that the staff felt that the milestone should not pass without some sort of fanfare even with the airline's economic struggles.

All the staff in the destinations were broken down through a random selection process into four teams: L, I, A and T. There will be a collection of sporting and cultural activities through which they will be competing.

Starting tomorrow, at 5 p.m. will be a basketball and netball competition at the YMCA, followed by a church service on Sunday at the St. Andrew's Anglican Church for 4 p.m., and then on Monday a cricket competition at Dredgers for 5 p.m.

A highlight activity is the Chat Night at the Pitch at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. On Wednesday 11 will be the Fun and Games evening, which will be held at the Airport Hotel starting at 7 p.m. and Friday is a Cultural Evening at the Botanical Gardens at 7 p.m. where representatives of the different countries will be asked to present a cultural item.

Yasco will be the premier sporting place next Saturday where the LIAT employees will compete in the fields of athletics, starting at 11 a.m. and football, starting at 4 p.m.

The day will be followed by the "Mad-Hatter Fete" to be held at Betty's off Factory Road at 10 p.m., an event open to the public.

Margetson said, "We felt we wanted to have a function where we could all let our hair down. We wanted to do it big and exciting and memorable just like the birthday is."

Chiki's Hi-Fi and the Taxik band will be providing entertainment. The organisers are encouraging everyone to enter with a hat. Wear a hat or cap, you pay $15, without one you pay $25 and anyone wearing a 50th anniversary LIAT cap will get in free. As a Digicel sponsored event, there will be prize giveaways throughout the evening based on the type of hat, funny, big, small etc.

On Sunday 15 Oct., will be a Beach lime at Ffryes Beach, with music provided by Chiki's Hi-Fi. Margetson promised that there will be competitions of tug-of--bleep-, swimming, eating, beer drinking, wet t-shirt, and male bikini as well as attractions like Bounce Castle, face painting and balloon art. This is also open to the public.

Lastly, on 16 Oct., will be the LIAT Back in Time (Story Time) at the Museum at 7 p.m. There will be pictures on display, presentations on LIAT from the very beginning to present day. Particularly, they managed to track the person who was actually born on one their flights who is invited to that event.

Hola Capitan K,

I'd like to see Liat one day at MIA and get a shot or two of their aircraft. Nice paintscheme they have, both new and old. I've seen a few Caribbean airlines bring their aircraft for maintenance here etc, but not Liat

Couldn't LIAT start services from MCO or MIA to the Caribbean?

With their current fleet of Dash 8s no. BUt there has been talk on the part of both LIAT and Star about EMBs. With those sure. Added to fact that LIAT already owns the route rights, which BWIA uses, it shouldn't be too difficult. But there always alot of talk about expanision with these caribbean airlines. Lets wait for official annoucements and actually planes Big grin

I am fond of their scheme myself. Big grin
