Sun Oct 08, 2006 9:57 am

Any chance we might see those again?

No. As their hedges expire and their fuel costs increase, they can't afford them ($19 fares).

Most likely no. Lowest Ive had for Ding fares was 39 o/w for BDL-BWI and return as well as BDL-MDW and return.

I sure as hell hope not. This industry has already hit rock bottom. Last thing we need are bus fares when airlines already can't afford 'em.

Before you know it they'll take out the seats alltogether and make you hold on to poles like in the subway.

Oh yeah, American Airlines already experimented with that concept (or was it NWA?)

I really miss the $19 fares from Socal to Vegas, just 30 minute flights as opposed to 4 hours of driving through the desert.

Especially now with the Caltrans Devore 2 project at Cajon pass. What a way to f-up traffic between LV an LA. I was lucky enough to drive down for a Yankees game before the project kicked off. I dont think I'll be driving back to LA anytime before the project is done.

Wish we'd get back to some of the $29 deals they had this past Jan - Feb for those "short haul" flights (between Socal, Phoenix, and Vegas). I was able to book some travel to Vegas, San Diego, and LA that I probably wouldn't have taken.

SLC - DEN was $39 for a while over the summer. Now it's up to $49. I'll be very surprised to see anything lower than that...from anywhere to anywhere.

Sad you don´t get these Ryanair-like deals in the U.S. ...

Although a bit "off-topic" to SWA i am glad i could grab some nice deals for a daytrip in Europe on Ryanair...

Itinerary: Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN) - Oslo-Torp (TRF) - Milan-Bergamo (BGY) -Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN)
At 10,-EUR (12,50 $) each segment (all tax incl. !!!)
All together slightly less than 4000 Km ( 2500 mi ) for less than 40,-$ ...
I miss the sound of rolls royce darts and speys

Blame the government. SWA is perfectly capable of operating at a profit on $19 dollar tickets, but taxes are killing cheap airfares.

NK may offer really low fares (see restrictions) but are they actually conducive to the company's long-term vitality? Me don't think so.

Yes, let's do away with those taxes!!! Mind you, we will have to give up the airports and air traffic control system that the taxes pay for, but yeah! Let's blame the government.  sarcastic

Based on their financial performance the last few years, I agree with you. I guess putting out these fares is their idea of yield management.

I can still grab the $39 fares on WN between MCI and MDW once in a while when I go to see my family there. Not $19, but still nice.

Sure, it would be nice to get the $19 fares again, but I can't complain about buying a r/t n/s MCI-MCO-MCI flight on WN for $117.10 with all taxes and fees included. I mean, that's a hell of a deal if I do say so myself. May not be anywhere near $19 each way before taxes, but $49 still isn't bad.

Luckily here we Have Ryanair

Yesterday I went to Paris.

I paid the flights

BGY-BVA
BVA-BGY

€ 25.

All included, taxes, charges and credit card fees.

25 € both the flights, € 12,50 each.

Ryanair is the top.

I love Ryanair, but I LUV Southwest. Now that I have flown Ryanair four times I can say it is OK, but Southwest is better IMHO.

A 70 lb bag on Ryanair will cost you $168. A 70lb bag on Southwest $25.

On Southwest you can show up early and check in without problems. On Ryanair you must wait until they open a check-in line for your flight. Once I got to the airport early so I could grab a byte to eat and no one was there to check-in my suitcase, so I waited and by the time the flight opened there was no time to eat.

Southwest gives you free Peanuts and Coke. Ryan air gives you jack.

Southwest seats actually recline. With Ryanair the seats are bolted upright and the interior could not be uglier if they tried.

Typically Southwest has at least 4 flights a day to each destination. If you are unlucky and miss a flight you can usually just catch the next flight --- no big deal. Typically Ryanair flys once a day to each location, so if you miss a flight you are just out of luck.

Southwest typically has a lot of business travelers, it looks to me like the only people who fly Ryanair are the "bottom feeders".

Southwest Airports tend to be closer to downtown, Ryanair seems to use airports like the one in Paris that is no where near Paris.

Ryanair is no Southwest and if they were in the U.S. I would never fly them, but in Europe Easyjet and Ryanair are my airlines of choice.

I completely agree with you, SJCRRPAX. I have flown Ryanair many times, but Southwest is tops for me in this category. Another thing to go along with what you said is that you can get further on Southwest than on Ryanair. Ryanair has a major lack of connecting flights, whereas you can get from practically any Southwest city to any other Southwest city with a stop or two.

Refreshing comment (wouldn't quote it all). Have never flown FR, partly because the concept doesn't apeal to me at all, partly because I'm not from an EU-subsidized rural community in Europe that happens to have an airstrip (hence I'm not in FR's market)

A bit cruel, but still. Love many of the things Ryanair have done to air travel in Europe, but what WN did in US with style, Ryanair did in EU with no class at all - WN kept flying special and WONDERFUL while introducing lower fares, FR takes every exciting, pleasurable and exotic element out of flying, as if this was the airline's sole reason for being. I don't want FR to serve free meals - or peanuts and coke for that matter - just a pleasant atmosphere to travel in.

Southwest typically has a lot of business travelers, it looks to me like the only people who fly Ryanair are the "bottom feeders".

I always get a kick out of the the Greyhound bus community and the Jerry Springer crowd?!

On *ding* fares from MDW-IAD these past few days, WN was touting $25 one way. 'bout as close to $19 as you can get...

It seems nowadays that those fares are available in EXTREMELY low quantities. Meanwhile, I have heard that some use the "$39/one-way" as a strategy to lure passengers in, i.e., offer $39/one-way and charge $169 for the other way back, hence, it's probably the same price you would've paid without the promotion. Just a thing I've heard that I thought could've happened.

That can happen if your travel plans do not contain any flexibility. However, if you adjust your travel plans by a day or two you can usually find a fare back for that attractive $39.

I wouldn't be able to tell for WN, but it is my impression that WN wouldn't try to "cheat" its customers by only offering the cheap fares in one direction. However, the strategy is used elsewhere: Take Sterling - they do it ALL THE TIME; to the great disappointment to consumers. CPH-BCN DKK 298 (including 160 in apt tax). BCN-CPH starts at DKK 1.000 or so for the entire promotion period. Flights CPH-AGP are always 10-25 % cheaper than flights AGP-CPH, diff in apt taxes cannot explain this..

And might I add.. WN RULES!!!! Come to Europe and open a base at CPH!!!

Probably because it is only a point-to-point airline, like U2, and doesn't offer connecting flights.

Exactly...that's what I was pointing out. I was simply saying that's a reason I prefer Southwest to Ryanair.

Fair enough. But what you must remember is that point-to-point flying seems to be far more normal in Europe than in the USA.

I can only agree Southwest is classes ahead of basic LCCs like FR. Southwest introduced low fares to overpriced markets and changed the U.S. aviation scene - but has always remained focused on customer service.

I'll agree with that, yes, especially when it comes to low cost carriers and those airlines in the "corners" of Europe, such as Ryanair, BA, and easyJet which are focused in the UK, Iberia in Spain, etc. and thus that makes connections nearly impossible (LH and AF, for instance, do tons of connections, transferring people around Europe and worldwide).
