NZ 744s In SIN And ROK - Upcoming

Mon Oct 09, 2006 3:14 pm

A Singapore based company Safe2Travel have chartered an NZ 744
to transport Singapore Military Troops from Singapore to Rockhampton.

The schedule involves 25 Charter flights mainly between ROK and SIN carrying the troops and 2
flights AKLSIN,
2 flights ROK – AKL,
1 flight AKL – ROK and
1 flight SINAKL positioning sectors giving a total of 31 sectors.

These flights will be done in 3 waves from
3 – 6 November,
17 – 22 November and
5 – 11 December.

Good opportunity to see the Koru in SIN again and a rare 744 visit there.

Why are Singapore military troops on their way to Austrailia? And, since they are Singapore military, why NZ??? Aren't there a bunch of old SQ 747s lying around? Also, last time I checked, Singapore Airforce had a bunch of C-130 trasports. Why not use those?

The SIN armed forces travel all over the place. Some posted to Australia, some come to NZ for a stint, others go to the States etc. It's not all solely in SIN.

Great to hear than NZ will be seen in SIN, even if it is only for a unscheduled service

They do these trips every year for annual exercises. Interesting to note, the training area they use here in NZ is larger than their entire country.

I'd say the job was tendered out and Air NZ came up with the best deal.

Quite simply, they're not big enough to carry the numbers required. Smile

What does this suggest about utilisation on NZ 744s... is the Air India lease still on, or is it in limbo? Rumour has it that loadings are now so strong on daily AKL-SFO that the route will change to 744 daily, on a permanant basis.

It would be very interesting to see if this deal was made because:

1) Air New Zealand - a Member of Star Alliance - could do it more cost effectively for MINDEF

2) Singapore Airlines Limited - A Member of Star Alliance - has no spare B747s around. (Extremely likely)

3) The Latter has no spare 777s around

or a combination of one or more of the above.

Obviously I doubt we'll find out but even so, food for thought.
Anyone can fly, only the best Soar.

Which would leave NZ with a spare 777?

I would imagine NZ were able to tender quite agressively for the contract, because of the current spare 747 and crew capacity. 31 747 sectors is definitely not income to be sneezed at.

Many charters for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) are done by airlines other than SQ. Eg Royal Brunei to Brunei, EVA Air to Taiwan, and NZ to AKL. Though my friends did go on the SQ 744 to Rockhampton about 3 years back I think. A tender is put out and the company that puts up the best deal is selected by the SAF.

I know the officers get to sit in J and the junior ranks sit in Y, but everyone gets Y food. But who cares about the food though, those lucky officers get to sit in NZ's Business Premier! Good for them!

That's cos any war that's fought by Singapore will never be fought on Singapore's territory. By the time *they* get to us and our little island, we're dead. Singapore will always make the first move and fight it *there*. Queensland has rainforests and landscapes very similar to *there*, a certain country to the north of Singapore.

With bases in Australia, Thailand, Taiwan, France, USA and Europe, it ensures that if Singapore is ever attacked (presumably by the countries to the north and south of the island, again I am not mentioning names!) SIN troops and equipment can then be deployed from the north (Taiwan, Thailand) South (Australia) to corner those countries.
