737-900ER At Edwards AFB, Why?

Tue Oct 10, 2006 5:39 am

Anyone know why the one and only 737-900ER has been at Edwards AFB for the past 4 days. Very strange.

That's correct, Edwards has a long history of being used as a test center for flight certification. With that long runway, you have plenty of room for anything you want.

Cross wind landing tests, perhaps? Certainly something having to do with certification.

They tend to do engine-out stuff, MTOW RTO, and other extreme tests at Edwards...having all that extra pavement is a nice safety feature for that kind of testing.

Yes. Boeing always brings the "new types" down there for flight testing. Considering you can basically do touch and goes down the dry lake bed in a 777 there is more than enough room for anything that might happen.
This is normal and expected.

I believe Boeing also does all its tail scrape tests at Edwards AFB.

Does Boeing still operate their test facilities at Moses Lake, Washington?

Yes and every aircraft that comes off the line goes on its first flight to Moses Lake (with a few exceptions).
This is talking about a new type. Boeing always brings them down to Edwards. They have been doing this for a long time. I'm sure you've all seen the pictures of the Boeing 720 with oversized tires doing mudd landings at Edwards back in the 50's?

Thanks Beach19; I know Boeing uses Edwards AFB for tests, as will as everyone else, as I lived about 30 miles from there for almost 40 years.
