It's on every channel...CNBC, FOX, CNN, MSNBC, etc. Some are reporting a chopper and some are reporting a small plane.

Bloody, I hope this was an accident!

Possible helicoptor, FAA says could be small general aircraft. Near east side Manhattan heliport. Hit building at 15th/16th floor of about a 25-30-story building. Fire on those 2-3 levels engulfing across several floors. Building hit 525 E. 76th Street, NYC, near York Avenue, near East River. Confirmed by FAA as a small plane or a helicoptor, possibly doing photo work. Some debris of a/c landed on E. 76th Street. No info as to casualties on the a/c or in the building or street, but now sign of any any casualties in building or street. Building fnear Hospital for Special Surgery and some apartments in building may for as to that hospital. Fire Department has reached the apartment and getting the fire under control. Weather cool, some haze/fog/mist.
Not believed to be any terror attack - only an accident.

From what I see on FoxNews only a few appartments on fire (thankfully).

and FoxNews says it's a helicopter, but AP says it's a small plane.

I can see the water shooting out of the building (obviously from the FDNY Fire Fighters on the scene).

Nope, no confirmation. The building was struck around the 20th floor so figure 250 feet of altitude or so. Unless it was intentional, helicopter at 250 feet sounds more reasonable.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/11/plane.crash.ap/index.html

It's nowhere near Rockefeller Center though.

Could be a case of an engine failure with nowhere to land the plane (if it was a plane).

And just found out at least the 2nd tier, which includes CLE is also in a ground-stop.

Uh oh... someone going to drop the T-word??? I'm surprised that FoxNews hasn't said anything yet....

God help those involved and their families. Looks too much like an accident rather than intentional. Besides, FAA is reporting that the helicopter reported in the area before the crash.

I'm on the Upper West Side, and I just went to the top of my building to see if I could see anything -- nothing from the crash, but at least half a dozen hovering news and police choppers distributed around Manhattan. Lots of emergency vehicle sirens as well. Hope the people trapped in the building are rescued soon.

Latest word: Small fixed wing aircraft our of Teterboro, NJ airport. Probably just doing a 'sightseeing' run. Was in the 'exclusion zone' where small aircraft in the NYC area are allowed along the east side of Manhatan. US DHS to say at 4:00 pm that this was an accident. Probably at least 2 killed on a/c. Correction as to building, was about a 50 story building, built in late 1980's, crash into the 40-41st floor area. NTSB on way to site to investigate.
