DL To Announce JFK-PSA/OTP; ATL-ICN/DXB/VIE/PRG

Thu Oct 12, 2006 9:29 am

There has been much speculation on this board about where Delta Air Lines will be expanding next summer. Tomorrow they will announce service to six new destinations. They have already updated their schedules to reflect the new routes. They are JFK-PSA (Pisa), JFK-OTP (Bucharest), ATL-ICN (Seoul), ATL-DXB (Dubai), ATL-VIE and ATL-PRG.

Delta will be providing the only transatlantic service out of Pisa and Bucharest. Delta will be the only US carrier to Dubai, Vienna, and Prague.

It will be interesting to see what ac DL uses on the new routes. Certainly DXB is a major focus for business traffic although it will be hard to compete vs. BA/AF to the major busines destinations in the US.

As for Pisa and Prague this could make tons of money in the summer but I don't really know the rest of the year

Does Delta not share Atlantic revenue 50/50 with Air France as do United-Lufthansa and Northwest-KLM? If not, I see the logic of these routes....get it all for yourself and don't share with Air France. But Northwest and United seem to send most of their passengers through the hubs of KLM and Lufthansa.....though there are some exceptions.

Yes, unless the rumors of Delta hunting for the ex Varig types are true.

Wonderful news for Delta Air Lines!

This is all very exciting--it's like the ghost of Pan Am is waking up. It's great to see a nonstop from JFK to PSA. DL really has Italy covered now--in addition to MXP and FCO, they are also the only airline flying between the U.S. and VCE.

Pisa? With a 767?

I know its too far... but a 767 seems like an awful lot of capacity.

The second JFK-LGW is also loaded...however the summer seasonal 3rd ATL-LGW is not. I'm guessing that's because it was moved to become the 2nd JFK flight.

I can't seem to pull up CVG-AMS or CVG-FCO. Are these two returning? Almost everything else seems to be loaded even seasonal flights like ATL-ATH and ATL-BCN, so its odd to see those missing.

Wow... DL continues their quest to take over the Atlantic.

Great to see new service to other areas of the world, though. DXB and ICN could be great flights for DL, and establish their presence in the market for future expansion in the area.

If they can make VCE work with a 767 (and if it's survived this long, I'm guessing they can), then a 767 to PSA shouldn't be any harder to fill. Even if it's mostly tourist traffic headed to Florence, Siena and the rest of Tuscany, that's relatively upscale tourist traffic--sort of like JFK-NCE, which from what I understand has been a cash cow for years.

I cant find them either. I think some of the growth over the atlantic from ATL and JFK will be at the expense of CVG.

Perhaps but don't forget that the flight only runs 4 days/week thus reducing DL's risk. Though I do agree that if it was w/in range, the 757 is the ideal equipment for such a route.

Don't draw any conclusions regarding CVG-FCO and AMS. DL has far from completed its schedule for next year. The announcements today are just to start the marketing efforts for the new flights. There are 8 764s to be allocated and they have yet to have schedules loaded. Also, it is highly likely that some of the newer flights did not do as well as CVG's existing int'l flights, esp. FCO. It doesn't make sense to drop a good flight in order to develop another one. Far too many people here have a fatalistic approach to CVG which is just not supportable based on DL's statements or actions.

There are rumors that the PSA flight is being revenue guaranteed... or there is some type of financial assistance.

Interesting that DXB gets a single digit flight number.

Delta flying to PSA actually helps AZ. The revenue share arrangement will ensure that AZ gets a piece of the action and if AZ does what I've read it might do, then the code share revenue on long haul will be a big deal to AZ...then again, who really knows?

good luck to DL. IMO the new routes, except PSA will do good, if not great(ICN,DXB,OTP) also if the PSA route does have incentives etc it will make life easier for DL.
I really think that eastern europe is where the money is currently and will be a future cash cow. Look at how IST and SVO doing, hopefully OTP will turn out the same way.

Great job DL.

That means that DL and UA are the only US carriers with non-stop US to ICN service. Will the ICN flight be NW/CO/KE codeshared? Almost all DTW-Japan flights on NW are DL/CO codeshared.

Nice to see Delta in Bucharest. Considering its existing North American network, JFK-OTP will be a money making route for them.

Bucharest really needed the higher standard of service that Delta is capable of.

Not to mention that the airport is often fogged in in the morning, and facilities are generally inadequate, even after a reconstruction. And most European carriers only fly various types of RJs into FLR..

KE is not going anywhere..since DL's ICN service is less than daily (4x weekly), KE still needs to be there. The DL service will just be supplemental...

ATL-TLV/NRT/ICN/DXB combo will require 6 777s
ATL-JFK-BOM will require 2 777s
There the total of 8 is maxed out; since both DXB and ICN are not daily, there will be cushion/downtime there to take care of MX issues, etc.

Yes, to the tune of US$6 million, a not insignificant amount of money.

Quoting Gokmengs (Reply 31):

Yes, DL's goal is to get into the Central/Eastern European markets now and establish themselves as the only U.S. carrier (and in some cases like OTP, the only carrier) with nonstop transatlantic service from those cities. Many of these markets may never grow to be big enough to warrant additional US-flag-carrier service - which means that DL will pretty much own a significant chunk of the market. Markets like BUD, KBP, OTP will likely not see another US competitor for a long, long time....

VCE is a really good station for DL not only for the leisure traffic, so it's not so simple to compare it with PSA.
VCE-JFK is operating since 2000, never as seasonal service. In 2006 DL adds VCE-ATL that will be extended to all the year round due to its well trend. According to DL, in the 1st 100 days of operations to ATL from June to September, DL carried about 17.000 pax recording 84% load factor (only in Italian)

Anyway I think PSA will be ok, especially during the summer season (who knows if they will continue to fly there in the winter time).

I'm also really happy finally to see the 1st American carrier into VIE, well done Delta!

So with the latest additions, Delta will have nonstop service between the U.S. and 30(!!) European destinations or 33 destinations across the Atlantic (the 30 European cities, plus TLV, DXB, and BOM). While Pan Am actually served more cities in Europe (about 40+ during its peak), I believe that no US carrier has ever had nonstop TATL flights to 30 European cities before. We'll see what CO announces for summer 2007 (CO currently flies to 26 European cities or 28 TATL cities (including TLV and DEL) - they may be able to hit 30 as well)

ATL will have nonstop service to 25 of the 33 TATL destinations while JFK will have 23 of the 33.

ATL-exclusive TATL destinations are: EDI, CPH, MUC, STR, DUS, ZRH, VIE, PRG, TLV, and DXB

JFK-exclusive TATL destinations are: NCE, TXL, PSA, IST, BUD, OTP, KBP, and BOM.

Bah, again no HAM  Sad .

Forget new planes then...ATL-SSA would require a new bilateral.

Actually, as some of our resident Brazilian members have pointed out in other threads, it could happen, as ANAC after the collapse of RG is more willing to allow US carriers temporary additional frequencies (that can become permant temporaries, so to say), which is how DL can add another ATL-GRU flight and AA add another MIA-GRU flight, despite the fact that both of them were already using all of their assigned slots as is.

I believe that ATL-NCE is not returning next summer...

Is Florence not capable of widebodies? I went past it on the train into the Santa Maria Novella train station, and saw smaller a/c, but no heavies.

According to AY, PSA is "Pisa/Firenze". Big grin
AY and ANA rock!

No they arent, they have a small runway. At the very most maybe a 757 can land there. But typically a32x's and 737s, props and m80s land there
