MEA Fleet

Thu Oct 12, 2006 10:02 am

What do you guys think about MEA's fleet? I think they need to get some more planes. They only have 9 planes total.

3 A330-300
6 A321-200

I would like them to get some A340 and maybe some 767's. They also need to make some routes to the US.

BEY-JFK
BEY-BOS

Maybe?

What for ? to display at BEY airport ?
If ever they want to expand, which is quite uncertain considering the political situation in Lebanon, they would need more A321 and maybe A319/A320 for the European & Middle East network.
And a fleet of Regional Jets for the local traffic to AMM, DAM, CAI, ALP, SSH, ALY, etc ...

From reports and sources, MEA has no interest in the A340. Currently, they would like to see few more A330-200s in the fleet as their wide-body choice.

The wide-body future is being planned around the 787 and A350.

The A340-500 or -600 could be brought in only as temporary solution for ultra-long flights if there were the need.

MEA's fleet is efficient for the job they need and very well appointed for the passengers we all are. Yes, I'd like to see them expand but - like any airline of their size - I don't think they should multiply types in their fleet.

Sure, an A330-300 would be acceptable for higher capacity to CDG and A318/319/320/321s would be welcome for lighter destinations. Maybe a regional jet would allow frequent flying in and out (mini hub & spoke) of nearby destinations (AMM, LCA, CAI) and free up the current longer legged fleet for reasoned expansion while allowing long thin routes during the day.

In any case, I would guess for now that MEA's target is to be in the black this year without having to take much aggressive measures. Then, in light of the stabilization that still has to take place in the country (animozity, weapons, Shebaa) and associated perspectives, they may think again at more flying.

Ban or no ban, MEA will be allowed to fly to the US - it's a matter of time. Yet I don't see them open up many routes and the A330-200 may very well be sufficient for BEY-JFK (9,000 km). A daily flight between the two cities would already be an achievement and requires nearly 2 frames.

Besides to CDG, MEA's problem is frequency and I think that's what they have to target first and foremost. Building/obtaining daily at LHR (332) and at FRA (321) is a must, having the rest of the network as well, with the exception of the African routes.

So in my optimistic view there fleet in 5 years would be like:

- 5-6 A330s (the 3 current 200s and 3 new ones whether 200s, 300s or a mix)
- 6 A321s as present
- 3-6 regional jets/A318 or A319/320s

New destinations could include: ALG, AMS, CMN, JFK, TIP, TUN. And more frequencies to existing destinations.

Long live Cedarjet!
I want the European Union flag on airliners.net!

They could do just like Emirates... but MEA is not Emirates, and BEY is not DXB.
Long Haul destinations for MEA are just viable in A.Netter 's dreams.
At least for the moment, and certainly not before the conflicts about Palestine is solved ... which means quite another few years.

I think every destination listed in the quote should be added by MEA. Even though some destinations listed above are already offered by some other airlines, MEA can do the different timing. For example, an KLM flight that departs to AMS leaves at 2:00 AM is already offered. MEA can depart to AMS that leaves in the afternoon or possibly evening.

AMS-BEY-AMS OFFERED BY KLM
ALG-BEY-ALG OFFERED BY AIR ALGERIE
TUN-BEY-TUN OFFERED BY AIR TUNIS ( i think there is already 2 flights daily on this route)

I would love to see MEA start to fly to JFK, EWR, LAX, YYZ, BOS.

A question I've always have is when The president or the prime minister use an MEA aircraft, do they pull it out of it's normal scheduled destination or cancel the flight? How does that work for MEA with such a small number of planes. Why don't the gov't have their own specially designed aircraft. if MEA at all flies to US, canada or south America I'd rather they have like 3 777-200LR with a new livery to start with. I'd like a stylized lebanese flag on the tail ala BA or Virging or even Aeroflot? What ya think.

KLM will not reinstate flights to Beirut

COPIED FROM KLM WEBSITE-

AMSTELVEEN, August 23, 2006 – KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will not reinstate flights to Beirut, Lebanon. The route was already loss-making before Beirut Airport was closed to commercial flights as a result of the state of war.

As soon as Air France resumes flight operations to Beirut, KLM passengers will be able with KLM’s French partner airline to fly to and from Beirut via Paris Charles de Gaulle.

This is a shame.

My whole point Cedars747 is that a 13 year old is getting upset that there isn't 1 connection via AMS anymore on an extremely obscure routing, that I'm pretty sure he has no intention of ever even flying on. I'm sure there aren't many people in Orlando thinking "it's time to visit Hezbollah in BEY", and there aren't many people in BEY thinking "it's time to visit Mickey". This is a very obscure route with next to no traffic, so who cares if you can't do it with one change via AMS?

The days are over when small countries like Lebanon can afford a national carrier operating a few widebodies to worldwide destinations. MEA's previous efforts to operate three 747s delivered in 1974/75 to Brazil, Australia, USA etc. almost bankrupted them. Political events of course didn't help and the 747s spent most of their lives leased to a wide variety of airlines before being returned to MEA service for a few years in the 1990s before being sold.

MEA made a strategic decision a few years ago to focus on regional services to Europe, Africa and the Middle East where demand justifies sufficient frequency to offer a competitive product, vs. operating a 747 to distant points like Brazil once or twice a week at very high cost.

Photos below of the 3 MEA 747s in their previous and current lives. All 3 are still flying after over 30 years service. All now freighters...2 with US carrier Kalitta Air, and 1 with the Dubai Air Wing.

I usually go down evey year with my family. We have a summer house down there. Luckily, this year we did not go down because my family was coming to me. I care about one more stop because with brothers and sisters is a pain in the neck to control them. I mean if I was by myself I wouldn't care. And plus, just because it says 13-15 doesn't mean that I am retarded.

Phxtravelboy,

Look this is an AVIATION FORUM, you should not be racist and not every Lebanese is with Hezbollah. We should not be discussing politics. Every year I go down to BEY with Martinair and KLM the planes are FULL. You have to book 6 months prior to departure because a lot of people to go down to BEY in the summer. Martinair uses a 767 from MCO-AMS which fits about 220 people. Out of the 220, 70 go on the AMS-BEY flight. Phxtravelboy, pick on someone your own age.

So you would like MEA to jump on the ( flag on the tail wagon ) . A lot of Airlines have flags on their tails nowadays : Emirates , British Airways , Ethiopian , Aeroflot and to some extent Etihad Airways ( that looks by the way like an Official Emiri theme ) .
I don't mind a flag on the tail as long as it is nicely designed and appealing to the eye  Smile .

The optimum fleet for MEA at that time is:
2 Airbus 330-200
9 Airbus 321-200
1 Boeing 747-400 ER or 1 340-500 for long range flights to South America.

Quoting MEACEDAR (Thread starter):
I would like them to get some A340 and maybe some 767's. They also need to make some routes to the US.

There is no need for that, they can sign code share agreement with Egypt Air for flights to USA.

Isn't this already done with the so-called Arabesk Alliance ? It is not a code-share but aren't the carriers involved supposed to co-operate in some sort ?

According to an interview with MEA CEO Mohammad El-Hout after the war ended, MEA is going to be placing an aircraft order very soon. It will be for 1 A330-200 and 2-4 A319/A320s.

MEA's focus for the time being is not to open up long haul routes, but to reinforce its existing route network with additional frequencies.

What is the current situation in BEY in terms of traffic levels?

It's returning to normal. All airlines have resumed service or are in the process of resuming service to Beirut except for KLM which was planning to axe BEY along with DAM and AMM this winter anyway...

It's sad because I really like KLM. Oh well...
