You have hit the nail exactly on the head. Alitalia has always oriented itself to do business from Italy before bringing business to Italy. This has much to do with the government being involved, the concept being Alitalia is for Italians. This is a strategy for failure...the only way AZ will ever get out of this morass is a) the government gets out and b) the unions get out and c) an external organization...American, Brit or German come in and run the airline the way it should be run. Of course, this is like turning a battleship without a rudder.
I'd say hell will freeze over before the Italian government stays out of AZ
's business. That said, their dual hub strategy, with numerous duplicating routes is certainly not helpful to their business. They have to finally decide one airport to use as a true hub, say MXP
, and keep the other focused on O&D pax wanting to visit the city. Doesn't have to be by cutting routes, but adapting frequencies would certainly be a start.
