DL: 10 Flights To Italy Next Summer From USA

Thu Oct 12, 2006 10:29 pm

All existing summer flights seem to have been confirmed for next summer plus the new JFK-PSA. In total DL will offer 10 flights. LAst summer DL had 717,000 available seats to Italy for the summer season with 619,000 total pax, an 86.6% LF. Geez AZ missed the boat that DL took to Italy.  banghead

Not surprising considering that Glenn Hauenstein, Delta's head of Network Planning and Revenue Management used to work for a short period at AZ (in between his job at CO and his current one at DL)...he knows the Italian market pretty well...

AZ has missed the boat more often than anyone can imagine! They do code-share with DL on many of the higher O&D U.S. routes and immediate connecting flights. Even SLC has a couple of AZ/DL code-shares. It seams that's the only way they know how to do business coming into the U.S., but then I wouldn't expect anything different from a government run socialist enterprise like AZ. If AZ ever became an investor run airline like the real world, then perhaps they would quit missing that very boat!  airplane   idea

Good point. Besides which, given AZ's rather questionable state, it certainly isn't too bad to establish oneself as the future transatlantic carrier of choice for Italian pax, especially those outside of Rome and Milan, should AZ actually ever be forced to stop operating.

You have hit the nail exactly on the head. Alitalia has always oriented itself to do business from Italy before bringing business to Italy. This has much to do with the government being involved, the concept being Alitalia is for Italians. This is a strategy for failure...the only way AZ will ever get out of this morass is a) the government gets out and b) the unions get out and c) an external organization...American, Brit or German come in and run the airline the way it should be run. Of course, this is like turning a battleship without a rudder.

I'd say hell will freeze over before the Italian government stays out of AZ's business. That said, their dual hub strategy, with numerous duplicating routes is certainly not helpful to their business. They have to finally decide one airport to use as a true hub, say MXP, and keep the other focused on O&D pax wanting to visit the city. Doesn't have to be by cutting routes, but adapting frequencies would certainly be a start.
