TWA A330s

Tue Jul 04, 2000 11:29 am

I read in a book that TWA had ordered several Airbus A330s and they should have been delivered in 1998. What ever happaned to that order? US Airways is the only US carrier so far to fly the A330.

I think that order may have been canceled due to some financial difficulties that TWA had and still has. The airline must save what it has and become profitable again before it can make major deals like that. If TWA stays alive (which I personally think will not happen considering the airline is near bankruptcy) you will finally see what you wanted to see.

I think the A330s were converted to A320/319/318 recently. Correct me if I'm wrong ...
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

If TWA is so broke, how did they buy all those new MD83s and the 717s?...Just curious...

The 330 order was converted when TWA ordered the 318's. For TWA's purposes renewing its short-haul fleet is far more important at the time than getting new overseas aircraft... a large portion of the trans-atlantic routes have been cancelled (remember Karabu) for various reasons, mainly they weren't making money. TWA has been able to supplement and upgrade their long haul fleet through leaseback deals with GECAS and ILFC.

FYI 1011 Fan:
Just to let you know, the old Pan Am was buying BRAND NEW planes (Airbuses) up until their last gasp. Buying new planes is not an indicator of financial stability. CO was receiving new 737-500's a year after they came out of bankruptcy and had hardly made a dime.
