AF And Their A340s

Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:28 pm

Is AF ashamed of their A340s?
Why did they decide not to send them to premium destination, using 777s and A330s?
Is there something wrong with their A340s?

It might cost more to send the A340s than 777 and A330s. Or the places that they are sending the 777 and A330s are not equiped for the A340s.

Its just a guess?

AF A340s are configured in a 2-class layout only and as such do not operate the most premium of routes which still feature a 3-class service.

Nothing wrong with them, it's just that AF has their B777s fitted with more First class seats that can't be filled where they send their A340s.

It's a business driven decision, nothng to do with "shame" o "wrong" with the plane.....

I would love to see B777-200 in BOG but it surely won't haven soon......not a premium destination  Sad

AF having both A340 and 777's really assigns two missions to the two airplanes. A 772ER is bigger then an A343, so it might send a 772ER to a destination with more demand, say 10% more(that about the actual difference in the the two planes)There is no shame in A343 having no First Class, when they did they only had one row of six seats. The 744 flying from CDG to Miami has no First either. AF flies to so many diverse destinations, from African colonies, Vietnam, Montreal as well as the financial centers in Asia and North America they need mutiple classes of long range planes with two versus three classes.

Well from a passengers view I don't see anything wrong with AFs A340s. Their inflight product is more or less the same throughout their fleet so no big difference when it comes to business or economy cabins. I flew their A340 to PHL (econ) this summer and although there were a few minors signs of wear and tear in cabin the overall product/comfort was just fine.

I'm surprised how often I read post here "bashing" the A340. I'm not a technical or engineer type of person but it seems when Airbus introduced the A340 it allowed many medium/smaller airlines to operate more non-stop long distance routes. Also, it came at a time when some airlines were looking to replace older DC-10s, 767s, and A300s, etc.

If any airline was "ashamed" or unhappy with the A340 they would have replaced them by now.

P.S. France doesn't have to any colonies in Africa.....they're FORMER colonies  duck
A330 man.

A340 have served AF well to distant but less demand destinations like Bogota. Some cities in the USA with two AF flights daily are well served by this and its twin A330.
