Their Eurpoean operations seem to be staying on the east coast for now and the A330 and 767 have more than enough range for this and ETOPS is not as much of an issue.
US may need some new planes *if* they decide to start some European ops out of PHX
but the A340 would not suit these places well. The summer heat would really kill it on takeoff and the plane would be weight restricted.
I agree that US has alot to do right now rather than aquiring a new fleet type, and a subfleet of 2 a/c at that. Lets wait for the merger to get more complete, the new employees contracts to get worked out, and then see where the airline stands. I think they are doing just fine for now with what aircraft they have and when the A350 comes online we will see some more international long haul expansion.
As of their last financial results they made $200+ million profit if I remember right, so for now I say stick to the business plan and stay in the black.
