Could US Utilize The A340

Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:36 pm

These 2 340s are up for grabs, & I was wondering if US would or could use these for a possible Intl expansion or capacity boost to their current routes...

I think it would be really neat to see an A340 in US colors. However, I highly doubt it would happen for a variety of reasons. US has a lot on its plate with the merger and I think adding those aircraft is not something necessary at this point. US needs to be focusing on its employees and its operations in PHL. To this point not much progress has been made in those areas. Also, no US company operates the A340, though US has a more Airbus-heavy fleet. I really dont see where US would need to fly with the A340, when the A330's range is sufficient at this time. Just some thoughts.

Their Eurpoean operations seem to be staying on the east coast for now and the A330 and 767 have more than enough range for this and ETOPS is not as much of an issue.
US may need some new planes *if* they decide to start some European ops out of PHX/LAS but the A340 would not suit these places well. The summer heat would really kill it on takeoff and the plane would be weight restricted.

I agree that US has alot to do right now rather than aquiring a new fleet type, and a subfleet of 2 a/c at that. Lets wait for the merger to get more complete, the new employees contracts to get worked out, and then see where the airline stands. I think they are doing just fine for now with what aircraft they have and when the A350 comes online we will see some more international long haul expansion.
As of their last financial results they made $200+ million profit if I remember right, so for now I say stick to the business plan and stay in the black.

US did actually place options on the A340 when they made the A330 order (or could convert 330s to 340s if they wanted, something like that), for planned expansion to Asia. However when the Asian economies went into crisis in 1998 they cancelled the plans and kept with just the A330s
