Emirates To Fly Hamburg To New York

Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:48 pm

Emirates will start Hamburg to New York flights. I think CO operates this service to Newark. I wonder whether this will impact CO badly or not.

Emirates will start Hamburg to New York flights.

It's been announced for a while and will start on October 29th according to emirates.com. The equipment will be a 77W, which is a major capacity over CO's 752. EK will use their 5th Freedom Rights out of HAM and the flights are to be direct on the DXB-HAM and HAM-JFK route and they will be well timed, so that the current DXB-HAM-DXB schedule is maintained.

Correct, CO is flying HAM-EWR while EK will fly to JFK.

Quoting Semsem (Thread starter):

Who knows. If EK has success with HAM-JFK, CO might have to think over their priorities and it could prove that HAM has become a very viable option for Transatlantic flights in general.

btw they have good fares on the flights, nearly the cheapest. much more cheaper than LH via MUC or FRA,

EK good luck, (also I am seeing good cargo loads on the flight)

Of course they have, that's their only chance to even remotely fill up 400+ seats each way on a daily basis.

Here are choices.
NYC-HAM on a Co 757
NYC-HAM with LH ( not sure if this route exists)
NYC-HAM with EK on a comfortable T7.

I think the choice is clear, EK.....

But is it as clear LAX-HAM? MHT-HAM? CLE-HAM? EK offers JFK as a destination with a chance to connect to another carrier. CO offers EWR as a destination and a direct connecting city. We'll see how this works. My one flight HAM-EWR had many people connecting onward, some who were on my EWR-LAX leg.

One more reason why EK has to join an airline alliance, preferably SkyTeam or have some kind of codeshare agreement with a US carrier. If Emirates management was in the hands of american executives, there would be no stopping to this airline.

Why? Emirates partners with a huge number of airlines. Why join an alliance and make that harder?

as for the one ticket thing, who's going to compensate the pax when one flight is late and they miss the connection? does EK have a codeshare with AA and DL?

Yeah right...! Only those two DXB-JFK pax who missed their nonstop DXB-JFK flight are on the DXB-HAM-JFK..

And yeah, fares are crazy, I've seen a little over 200 Euros return HAM-JFK... btw many airlines an TA's alike in Denmark have added HAM as a departing city along with the usual Danish departure options (CPH and BLL primarily).. don't think this has got much to do with EK in particular though

Personally, I'd much rather fly a 777 than a 757 over the pond (daaah, look at my username..), however, CO still offers slightly wider seats than EK in economy (3-4-3 in a 777.. uuuhhhhh.. but nice inflight otherwise on EK it seems)..

"Comfortable EK T7"? Maybe in F and J but certainly not in Y with their cramped 10-abreast seating.

Do any other 777 operators have 10-abreast in Y class? I can't think of any.

But since EK's fares in the back of the bus are often the lowest, that's all most passengers seem to care about these days.

It always amazes me that EK is able to get away with such an uncompetitive seating configuration on their 777s.

P.S. LH doesn't operate HAM-NYC nonstop, just via their FRA and MUC hubs. If memory correct, in B707 days in the 1960s/70s they did operate nonstop for a few years. I believe DL also operated JFK-HAM nonstop before 9/11.

DL inherited the route from PA if I recall correctly. That being said, given that they're going for an major international expansion, why isn't DL considering a return to HAM? Doesn't have to be from NYC but it could also be from ATL if the O&D traffic is there to support the route.

I believe if you fly Emirates they give Delta and United Airlines miles. I am sure the food and comfort will be a zillion times better than CO 757.

Are all EK 777 seats 34" pitch? I thought that some were 33 or 32". And I think CO is less than 0.25" wider. And no AVOD yet.

In 1969, I flew LH B707 JFK to MUC which first stopped in HAM, then JFK to MUC was rerouted over CGN and a few years later over DUS before finally becoming nonstop JFK MUC.

As recent USA airline history would show

When the US has a cold the rest of the world has pneumonia. My point was that considering all the problems civil aviation faces in the US, like labor union problems, pensions, healthcare, high fees and fuel prices, US airlines are doing great. If European airlines are faced with those same problems and without government bailouts, they would be instincts. It is also no easy task handling 25,000 flights a day. What I tried to say is that, with all the business friendly atmosphere in the UAE and with all the available resources, american execs would do wonders for EK compared to british ones. That's all.
