Are There Any 747s At BHX?

Fri Oct 13, 2006 4:03 am

Hi all

I've just joined airliners.net after a good few years browsing the photos and forums on here. A great place and a big thanks for all those involved and contribute to a fantastic source of information!

I have a couple of questions for those concerned!

I arrived at work this morning (just outside north-west of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire) at around 8:25am and I was alerted by a friend that she could see a low flying jet above us! At a guess, it looked like a 747 at around 9000 feet! It had look about it but now I am not so sure! It was heading to a easterly/south-easterly direction.

Can anyone tell me by visual, if not sound, the difference between a 747 and an A340? Also, would there have been any 747s taking off from BHX around just after 8am on a Thursday?

I did not have my camera with me to take a photo so it's just a memory now.

Can anyone help?

(Wellingborough is probably at a guess around 60 miles from BHX. I am not 100% sure!)

Thanks!

Birmingham does not have any regularly scheduled 747s. The largest aircraft they get is the 77W on EK39/40 BHX-DXB (summer season only) and also the AI 772ER on YYZ-BHX-Amritsar.

I do believe that there are a number of hajj charters wihch operate from BHX. I seem to remember a pic of a SV 744 at the airport.

Hope that info helps, and welcome to the world of airliners.net!  Smile

PIA used 747s to BHX in the late 90s/early 00s but there are no current scheduled or charter services operated by the aircraft. 747Fs have been known to visit BHX (Atlas Air were regular) but these freight services stopped a while back. There is even less chance of what you saw being an A340.

It is possible, I suppose, that the XL.com/Air Atlanta 747-300 could have been assigned to BHX that day, but I very much doubt it.

The aircraft was either from/going to somewhere else or your eyes were deceiving you.

Thanks guys! Interesting info!

How about EMA or STN?

I naturally assumed BHX because a couple of years, the flight paths were changed which saw more departures and arrivals in/out of BHX flying over my area!

I'll give you another example, approximately 3:20pm today, I saw a plane heading towards BHX over Wellingborough obviously below 10000 feet and moving quite fast (I know there is a speed restriction below 10000 feet). From the shape of it looked like a F100 or F70. This of course could have been a BMI flight from AMS or BRU inbound to either BHX or EMA!

Keep them coming!

EMA handles Kalitta 747s and the occasional MK Cargo. I'm not too sure about STN but I believe there are regular 747F flights in there.

Doubtful - BMI no longer have F70 and F100s. More likely be KLM to BHX.

(Plus BMI dont fly to BHX anymore on a sked basis.. only WW and they obviously only operate the 737. )

Guys

Maybe I have missed something (probably!!) but I was under the impression that BHX couldnt handle the 747 / A34x??

I also didnt realise the 777 could operate there. I was under the impression that the biggest bird BHX can accomodate is the 767. I think even I opened a thread here asking about that some time ago.

I'll try and find it!

I've seen a couple of 74F machines dep. from BHX. I recall one of those crossing the runway and taxiing the other side, so as to use the full length of the runway.

I think that BHX is capable of accepting 747's. Doesn't happen very often from what I can gather.

Was the An-225 not due to depart from EMA sometime today? Could that have been the aircraft that was spotted?

BHX really needs to get a longer runway before it can accept regular 747 movements again, its relatively short for such a type. There are also occasional 747 visitors early in the morning if LHR or LGW are shut by fog, the divert into BHX and then carry on down to their destination when the weather has cleared.

Yes. STN is British Airways World Cargo hub. They have sole use of GSS's three 744Fs and usually have an Atlas Air 742F or 744F on short term lease based there:

BHX can handle 747s and has done so many times in the past, although fully-loaded examples are a different matter. PIA and Atlas Air were regulars in the late '90s/early '00s, and some of last years Hajj flights were operated by SV 744s. The Corsair flight was a special charter (can't remember what exactly).

During the G8 summit (held in Birmingham a few years back), the two Japan Air Defence 744s were handled simultaneously, along with USAF 1, an IL-62, IL-96, a couple of DC-10s and a TriStar. Of course many smaller craft were also present. Needless to say, apron space was at a premium that day........

As for 777s, BHX has no problems handling those, however they must attend certain stands. Both EK and AI have daily 777 flights into BHX, with good loads too.

Thank you for all your help (again) guys. I do remember 747s at Birmingham in the past,

I've obviously lost touch in the past few years with aircraft movements with the airports locally!

Next time guys, I promise to take a photo! At least that way, one of us can probably work out what aircraft type it is!
