UA At MDT

Fri Oct 13, 2006 12:27 pm

This may have already been discussed, but I found this on the Harrisburg International website: http://www.flyhia.com/news/News.asp

Quote:
Two Treats from United Airlines

Beginning Tuesday, October 31, United Airlines adds its seventh daily flight to and from Chicago O'Hare International Airport! Flight #7463 is scheduled to depart Harrisburg daily at 12:14 p.m. and arrive in Chicago at 1:31 p.m.

Also on October 31, United introduces regional jet service offering First Class seating. The airline will upgrade their 4:40 p.m. departure to Chicago (Flight #5624) to a 66-seat CRJ 700 regional jet featuring First Class and Economy Plus seating.

Quote:
"United is the fastest growing airline at HIA and is on pace to set yearly records for total passengers and overall market share at Harrisburg in 2006," said Scott Miller, HIA spokesman. "We are grateful to United for providing central PA business and leisure travelers another convenient flight option and additional travel comfort when choosing to fly from Harrisburg International Airport."

As of October 31, United Airlines will offer a total of eleven daily departures from HIA: seven to Chicago O'Hare and four to Washington's Dulles International Airport.

Does anybody possibly see UA surpassing US as the busiest airline at MDT? I wonder if there is any demand for DEN. Any thoughts?

There is demand for DEN, it's been(being) looked at, don't look for mainline frames though.

Well, I wouldn't expect to see mainline aircraft used here at first. Still, it would be additional service to MDT to provide more connections at another hub.

Do you suppose this could be done with an E170?

That would be the most likely, given that the route is rather long.

Steeler83,
I do see UAX surpassing US as the biggest carrier out of MDT.... anyone who thinks that mdt will be a UAL ground handled station 1 year from now is kidding themselves.....does DEN warrant a flight????2 things have to happen.....#1...is there enough traffic(o/d) between those cities to warrant the flight????if i were a mdt 1k/1p/2p flyer i would avoid ord like the plague and iad a a viable option to ord....#2.....could a E170 make the leg???as this is the only a/c i can see doing it...my bets are no DEN flts and the more uax flying you get the better chance you will get mainline booted out....can anyone in here tell me what UAL ground handled station has no UAX flts????i know but want to see who knows Smile

The only reason UA will surpass US @ MDT is due to the capacity pulldown of US over the last few years. If US were at its historically highest levels of service @ MDT, no other airline would even come close to serving as many passengers. It's kind of sad when the fastest growing airline there is one that is adding 70 one-way seats to its schedule (one 50-seat RJ and an upgrade to a 66-seater on another flight). Travel continues to plummet at my hometown airport, unfortunately, and it's going to take a lot more than an extra CRJ flight to ORD and a single daily CRJ nonstop to DFW to turn things around. Sure, they help, but not nearly enough. At this point, every little thing they get becomes a big deal, because of how much they've lost. This sort of added flight would not have been significant 5yrs or so ago. A sign of the times, for sure. Hope more good news continues to come out of the HIA camp. The market needs it. I'll be watching.

Just think a few short years ago there were 5 or 6 733s with a 400 mixed in going between PIT and MDT daily. Now just a four Dash 8s. Its a shame that it took this long for someone to start to pick the seats up.

The additional flight to ORD is good news for MDT. Too bad it is on a RJ but at this point the airport will take any additional service.

Anyone have info on how the new Eagle flight to DFW is doing?

Working at MDT I see the terminal sit empty several times during the day. It's a shame to see a fantastic facility with no aircraft at the gates.

One of these MDT will score the big one...but when. I've said it before...which ever LLC starts service to MDT will reap the benefits of an untapped market.

I have heard it's doing quite well. They advertise everywhere pretty much, even on the radio stations here about how AA Eagle now has n/s service to one of the biggest hubs in the USA: DFW.

I don't see that happening either. It is an added frequency and an upgrade on another into ORD. I am just asking what the connecting traffic is like on flights from ORD to DEN; demand; etc, pretty much what you went on to bring up at the end of that post.

The state of affairs at MDT is rather sad now. Sure, 5 years ago or so, nothing even came close to what US had at MDT, with their massive hubs at PHL and PIT. Now with the demise of the PIT hub, and its close proximity to PHL, US' presence at MDT sure has dwindled... I do wonder what the op costs (landing fees, gate leases, etc) are in comparison with PHL, PIT, JFK and CMH...

From what I understand the landing fees are very high at MDT. A reason that G4 will not start service here. I bet the fees are high so they can pay for the new terminal.

I'm flying to ORD then on to PHX on the 21st. I'll let you know what load is out of MDT on the 0600 flight.

add DCA to that as well.
I wish UA flew mainline to MYR, that way you wouldn't be stuck in a smelly Saturn for 12 hours.

About 89 passengers a day travel from MDT to DEN, so there should be enough yield for atleast a CRJ-200, or 700, as it offers a ton of connecting oppertunities.

Ummm, there are many correct answers. All of Southern FL (if you count TED). ANC, DCA, and many of the International cites if you count them.

HNL has both Ramp and C/S.

I think all of UA's Hawaiian destinations are both Ramp and C/S right?

Anyway good news for MDT. They need more flights. It's a beautiful airport, and it's a shame to see it so empty. How wany mainline UA flights are there? I've flown on a 733 to/from ORD a few times. Oh DEN would be cool as well!

One mainline per day to ORD...usually a 733. On Sunday's it has been an A320 for some reason. The other morning it was a TED A320.

THANKS! That's strange that an A320 is on the route, interesting. Thanks again.

It's strange that the Airbus only runs the Sunday flight. Flight arrives Saturday night and RON's...so it's the same crew coming in and going out.

It was very strange...but a nice surprise to see TED at MDT.

Damn! Where was I? I need to look a little closer in my back yard! Great news for MDt and for those (like me) who are avid UA fans!

Now, lets see those fares come down!

Would love to see at least 1x daily to DEN. That would be a very attractive alternative to ORD.

While I never travel to or from MDT, I would like to see this as well. Any expansion to DEN is welcomed. It is much easier than ORD. We also need a flight to DEN from SAV as well, on average we get about 100 pax between SAV and DEN every day.

I agree. It would make for some easier connections to the west coast than ORD would. ORD is just a mess for connections all around really. I have yet to meet or talk to someone who didn't say that ORD is a mess...

Rather than using a CRJ on a 1X daily MDT-DEN routing, I could see an E70. It's a tad larger than the CRJ-700 (by roughly 5 seats anyway) and more comfortable, so I have heard. If the service does quite well and if demand should increase, then I suppose service would be increased, perhaps up to 1X daily A319?

Any thoughts? Think I am crazy for thinking this?

I would agree that MDT could support one flight to DEN. If the numbers are good for DFW I don't see why they wouldn't be good to DEN. An E70 would be my choice of aircraft.
