Why Are United's Boeing's Always 7x7-x22

I apologize if this has been asked or discussed before. But it seems as though most of United's Boeing's have the last two digits as 22, e.g.:

720-022
727-222
737-322
737-522
747-122
747-222
747-238B Where were these from? PA, QF?
747-422
757-222
767-222
767-322
767-322ER
777-222
777-222ER

Why?

Is this some kind of tradition that dates back to when United and Boeing were connected?

Does Boeing have a consistent numbering system for all airlines?

I noticed the following trends, is this correct?

AA - 7x7-x23
CO - 7x7-x24
DL - 7x7-x32
NW - 7x7-x51
US - 7x7-x01
WN - 737-xH4
TZ - 7x7-x3N

Does Airbus do the same thing?

Last question, is there really a difference between UA's 777-222 and AA's 777-223 besides the interior configuration and paint job? Is there a difference that warrants a different model number?

Those are the customer codes.

Each airline has a customer code. So, for example, every Boeing aircraft delivered new to American ends in -23 to denote its original purchaser.

I believe the last two numbers are the customer code for Boeing aircraft. So Boeing's customer code for UA is 22, hence B747-422, B767-322...and so on. Fair enough question. I wondered that for years as well.

Airbus operates a differnet system, I believe, but I'm not quite sure how it works.

That's right. It's kind of handy with some fleets because it's an instant way of telling who the intial operator was, since the airplane codes don't change when the airplane switches hands. I believe UA has or used to have some 747-251s or else NW has or used to have some 747-422s, since one of these airlines sold some of its 747s to the other.

I don't believe this applies to leased planes, since those have codes of ILFC or whoever as far as I can tell.

Airbus's codes are not based on this system. Their codes have something to do with engine type if I remember correctly.

They are Boeing's customer code for UA.
NZ's code is 19... ie 747-419
QF's code is 38
some airlines have letters in there as well.
It is a sense of pride for many airlines to have a good number...
NZ took its number over from NAC (a domestic operator it merged with a couple of decades ago) as before that NZ was a customer of McDD, whereas NAC was a Boeing customer.  Wink
56 types. 38 countries. 24 airlines.

Well then, United should have a lot of pride, since they have a great number, especially when they order a 200 series aircraft, e.g., 777-222!

Calling a 787-10 a "787-122" doesn't jive with me. Logically it makes sense, but I don't like. How about "787-1022?" Weird, kind of Star Treky, but I like it better.

That list tends to be a bit out of date. It's missing customer codes such as for example the new OS one (B8) and Etihad's code (FX). Here's a more recent list:

Airbus is Aircraft type (A320-2xx), Engine manufacturer (A320-21x) and engine variant (A320-211)

Many leased planes will have the airline's customer code, if they are actually ordered by the airline and then financed by a leasing company. Only aircraft that are pre-ordered by leasing companies get their codes.

UA has at least 1 of their 2 747-451s left. Also, a major portion of Virgin's 744 fleet has Alitalia's code. In both these cases, these were canceled orders by the original carrier after the aircraft was already in production.

Amazing, though not surprising, how many of the low-number blue-chip airlines are no longer with us.

As as been said above, the number or letters are the Boeing customer codes. Not sure how the B787 will work with the customer codes

The other difference there is between the two is the power plant. United's 777's are equiped with PW engines and American's 777's are equiped with RR engines.

If SN Brussels ever orders aircraft from Boeing, I think that the 29 code could be reused
If Swiss ever orders aircraft from Boeing, I think that the 57 code could be reused
But what about the codes 21 (Pan Am), 25 (Eastern), 27 (Braniff), 31 (TWA), 98 (Air Zaire)...I don't think those airlines will ever come back. Or maybe they will never be reassigned to avoid confusion.

I thought part of the whole 787-x numbering was that they were going to make the design more standardised, rather than every airline choosing from hundreds of different options? (ie standardised flight deck etc)

And BA ordered 772s equiped with both GE and RR engines and all these aircraft are designated 777 236 despite this significant difference.

Interestingly there is an instance of the same Boeing code being used for two entirely separate customers. All aircraft ordered by BOAC/BA and all 757s (but not 737s) ordered by ILG (International Leisure Group) for use by its then subsidiaries, Air Europe and/or Air Europa, and all 757s ordered directly by Air Europa were assigned the '36' model suffix.

This all arose because of the fifth 757 manufactured. This aircraft (22176/14) was originally assigned to BA as G-BIKE as part of their launch order. However BA postponed delivery of its fifth aircraft and the aircraft was reassigned to ILG for use by Air Europe. However Boeing still assigned the '236' model number to it:

Subsequently both ILG and Air Europa placed orders for both 757s and 737s. The 757s included G-BNSF and the 737s G-BMTC. While all the 757s were assigned the Boeing '36' suffix that has also been used for all aircraft delivered by them to BOAC and BA, they used the 'S3' suffix they assigned to ILG, Air Europe and Air Europa for the 737s:

A final point about the Boeing codes. The first two were '20' and '21' assigned to themselves (Boeing) and PA. They then worked through the numbers in numerical order assigning the next number either to their newest customer or prospect. When they had reached '99' they went back to '01' and worked through to '19'. At this point they started to assign either alpha-numeric or numeric-alpha codes but randomly.

How did Britannia get such a low number 04? Surely their first Boeing would have been the 737-200 in the mid/late 60s, whereas lots of other airlines would have operated 707s, 720s and 727s previously?

Also, I notice BEA with 18, who never ordered any Boeing aircraft before the BOAC merger? Weren't their only American planes Tristars?

It did. Basically, KLM took them as Transavia aircraft so the airline wouldn't have to go through the national certification process again. I believe that Transavia's 738s are similarly coded with KLM's code.

I may be totally wrong here but I'm sure I've read it somewhere. Didnt the Air Europe/ILG 757s carry the -236 suffix because they were originally ordered by BA? Wasn't it an arrangement between BA/Air Europe such that both parties (more Air Europe) were able to negotiate a better price by pooling their orders?

I thought Air Europe ordered the 757's to BA's specifications hence the 36 desigination. I read somethere that was why this happened.

Yep, customer codes. For DL it would be 32. (B757-232, B767-432, B737-832 etc.) For NW it would be 51. (B757-251, B747-451)

Well, if you know what the individual customer ordered at Boeing, it is still useful.
