DL Expanding At DAB?

Mon Oct 16, 2006 4:56 am

I heard a rumor (from a source that may be unreliable) that Delta is planning service to LGA and possibly BWI in response to Airtran entering DAB. Does anyone know if this is true or is it just talk?

My source works for DL at DAB, but that doesn't mean he's reliable.

you got it. I'm sure this is a shock to DL. Ever since time that FL opens a new route its oh man DL is going to fly 777's from ICT-MCO. GET OVER IT.

I would imagine that DL would be expanding at DAB as a result of this. If FL is introducing seasonal service, then I don't they will. If the service is year round DL would be wise to do this.

Who there is your source? ( I know 1/2 of them)

DAB was pushing for DAB-JFK for a while with little success. I certainly dont see BWI on the radar, nor DCA since UA already does IAD 2x. DL has cut back alot at DAB over the past 2 years... at one point when i worked at DAB there was over 10 daily with 3 destinations. This fall its ATL only and 2-3x mainline 2-3x RJ, CO and UA have stepped up to pick up the slack but even with that the traffic has still been down over 20% in recent months. With FL DL may see their DAB market share below 50% for the 1st time in over 10 years, but as they say.. snooze you loose...

Who knows maybe DL has learned being in bankruptcy that it is more important to have routes that produce revenue over protecting market share at whatever costs.

That depends on ones bias  Wink . Some people will only see DL adding ATL routes to Air Tran markets like BMI, while others will see DL dropping countless TPA/FLL/MCO RJ routes against varying carriers. Overall, DL has gotten tamer compared to the past, but if something "serious" were to happen, say B6 trying CVG, or ATL (again), Delta would open fire. But definitely not from a market like DAB that's not worth it. And sure as hell not with some random stuff like DAB-BWI that doesn't even closely fit into DL's route map.

I too, used to work at DAB for over 5 years on the ramp for DL. As RL757PVD states, DL at one time had flights to ATL, CVG and even DFW briefly. I think the current management has correctly removed so much focus and capacity from the low-yeilding FL routes. Those routes add great market share, of which FL is very dense, however extremely low-yielding.

It is a given that when fares are lowered, demand will increase. DL has stimulated the market in the past and can do it again. If someone else stimulates the market, you can bet DL step in to pick up whatever slack it can.

Have you seen DL's schedules from ATL to MDW and MSP recently? DL has a dozen flights a day to both cities; MDW is various Delta Conx while MSP is a mix of mainline and Delta Conx but both cities have far more frequencies than DL has ever had.

DL may not fight against every airline out of cities that aren't key to its survival but ATL IS Delta Air Lines. You can fully expect DL will protect its market there.

I really would not be surpirsed to see DL add some capacity at DAB.....the airport has been just about ignored for years (remember when EA/PI/DL had mulitple flights per day calling on DAB) and DL is certainly not going to make it easy for AirTran at DAB, why should they? DAB has been solid DL territory for years and will certainly put up a fight to protect their territory. Increased service by DL to ATL, a daily regional jet flight to the NYC area and maybe a regional jet service to CVG could all work...I kinda doubt we will see DL flying DAB-BWI however.

historically, the average fares from DAB are hardly 'low yield' compared to most other Florioda markets...

Yes, DL may add service out of DAB just to try and get FL to eventually pull out. IF that were to happen, DL would then scale back to the crap service we have here now in DAB. DL has tried this elsewhere with B6/FL and lost money so good luck DL with that strategy. Like someone said above, you snooze, you lose. I hope FL is here to stay. Steven Cooke, the director at DAB got FL and hopefully will have B6 here as well with service to JFK within a couple months. Right now they (DL) have 4 RJ flights and 2 mainline flights with the last flight out of DAB at 1800L. That sucks. Before DL went chapter 13, they had more flights into here and they were all getting good loads. Traffic is down now at DAB for the only reason DL pulled out a lot of seats out of the market. FL obviously saw this (landing fees and terminal rental fees have been waived for FL for one year which I am sure helped as well) and came here. I hope FL is here to stay. Good for them to finally come here and give DAB a chance.

I hope FL is here to stay too. My friend flew SNA-ATL-DAB-MLB on DL back in 99'. My grand parents flew the early MD88 to ATL then connected to SAN. I'm just hoping FL goes year round. Come on DAB we can do it.

I remember when CO had three daily flights each to Daytona Beach and Melbourne, all with 727s, M80s and 737-300s.

I believe you are wrong. CO only has 2 daily flights to EWR and an extra frequency on Saturday. This is 15 weekly ERJ flights. CO is hardly "picking up the slack".
DL is pulling back capasity to increase revenue! If you haven't noticed, the fares in DAB have been going down. This is due to the SUPER low fares into MCO. Since there is a great difference between MCO and DAB fares, a lot of people are going to MCO. Thus, DL is trying to maximize their revenue and profit from people who need to fly to DAB. Now, you may see a reaction from DL but, my feeling says it will be lame and FL will be in DAB for a while.

I was referring to the springtime when CO was running 2x 737 with 1-2 weekend ERJs (3rd EWR or CLE) Even when CO had that bump in capacity and UA was there, traffic was still down...
