AS To Install Winglets On 739 Fleet

Tue Oct 17, 2006 7:54 am

Just read on Alaskasworld that Alaska is planing on installing winglets on its 737-900 fleet (sorry, employee login required, but you can see the question underneath the watercooler logo). It says they are still working on a timetable, but the decision to go ahead and install them has been made.

It also says that only 9 of Alaska's 12 737-900's are suitable for winglets. Anyone have any idea why that is the case?

Thanks for the info ASAFA. Maybe the cost to refit the wings on the older 3 jets to handle the extra weight outweighed the benefits of them. Where does AS mainly send their -900's. I thought I heard somewhere that they mainly sent them transcon, but my memory is foggy on that subject. I know that in Feb 2005 that they had a daily -900 going to Vegas. It was my first ride on a -900. It is a long plane compared to the -700/-300's I'm used to.

Alaska operates their 900s on alot of the high density west coast destinations like SEA, LAX, SFO, ANC, GEG, LAS (summer), PHX (summer), PSP (winter), Mexico during the winter, and also for one of the BOS flights and to ORD during the summer. I am sure I am missing some as well though  Smile

I assume they can't be installed until the 739ER is certified, as it has winglets as a "standard option." AFAIK, the winglets have only been certified on the 73G and 738 to this point. Anyone know differently?

CO will not be far behind in retrofitting winglets to our 737-900 fleet, in addition to the winglet-equipped -900ERs that will be arriving in a year's time.
