Finnair FA's To Strike This Week?

Tue Oct 17, 2006 10:13 pm

A friend of mine is telling me that the AY flight attendants will start a strike on Thursday this week. Is this true, and is it about cost cutting or other "usual" reasons?

Finnair's cabin crew have earlier managed to negotiate a salary that's apparently 30% higher than the national benchmark. Now the company needs more of them, but is hiring through the subsidiary Aero instead, in order to be able to offer lower wages.

Usually I think unions are a good thing, but this sounds like complete bullshit. Finnair isn't even going to renegotiate any old contracts. The ones with the 30% higher salaries will get to keep them.

Do you have any info about the strike itself? I have some people coming from Finland on AY early next week, but I guess they can be booked on SAS just in case.

No info, and I'm also finding it difficult to even guess at what's going to happen. It could get really ugly, as Finnair obviously can't afford to continue paying them 30% more than competitors do, and the flight attendant union isn't exactly known for being flexible.

I don't think the current solution will work anyway, however. It seems a bit weird to hire people through the subsidiary and then have them do the same job as everyone else. Finnair probably has something else up its sleeve and is using this as a scare tactic.

It's called B scale. AA did this back in 1980 or 81. Robert Crandell didn't want to upset his employee's by asking for large concessions, so instead AA began hiring employee's on seperate contracts with seperate pay scales. Eventually, the A scale and B scale employee's contracts were blended, but not for many years. The B scales were what allowed AA to grow so large, so quickly back in the 80's.

Don't know how good idea that would be as the danish branch of SAS's FA most likely strike from next thursday, so unless your planning to go via ARN would I stay away from SAS week

It could go any way. It will be under mediation during the night.
I suppose http://www.finnair.fi/lakko will be updated.

So there'll be a strike! Only flights to Oulu, Kuopio and Tampere will be flown in Finland. MD-11s will fly to London and Paris. Other planes (not specified) to Brussels, Stockholm and Tallin. No international long distance flights will be flown.
Edit: all Boeing 757 charter flights will be flown however, but with some changes in schedules.

http://www.finnair.fi/lakko

"Kohteita ovat kotimaassa ainakin Oulu, Kuopio ja Tampere. Euroopassa lennetään laajarunkoisilla, noin 300-paikkaisilla Boeing MD-11-koneilla Lontooseen ja Pariisiin sekä muilla koneilla Brysseliin, Tukholmaan ja Tallinnaan. Kaukolentoja ei lennetä."

It's already reflected in tomorrow's official dispatch list, so it's pretty much official:

So an MD-11 warning sounds for spotters in Paris and London!
