Jet Blue New Tucson Flight

Wed Oct 18, 2006 6:09 am

I am just wondering if there are any preliminary results as to how Jet Blue's new JFK to TUS flight is going. I sure hope it will continue.

Though it is the slow season, I hear that it's doing pretty well. It looks as if more Tucsonians are on the flight than New Yorkers. Odd.

Looking at the FlightAware history, it is about 30 minutes late every day on average, but that's because it is flying out of JFK. It was nearly 2 hours late the day that storm moved through the Northeast. Nothing can really be done about that though.

That would make sense. The New Yorkers have just one destination on the flight... TUS. The Tucsonians can go to New York or connect on to many other destinations. Therefore, the flight serves a greater market segment from TUS than it does from JFK.

That's true. However, keep in mind that New York is JetBlue's base of operations and that it has great brand awareness. Tucson is a new city with very little brand awareness, so one would think that at least the first few months or even first year of service would see more New Yorkers than Tucsonians. In any case, I'm pleased to see that the service is being well received by them.

I sure hope it sticks around. I'm booked on it in March. Can't beat $300 round trip.

The flight seems to be a little delayed each day but hopefully scheduling is working out that problem since obviously the plane needs an extra 1/2 hour in NY before take off.

Loads will progressively increase because the Tucson tourist season is just beginning and the awareness of this flight is still low.

It's been doing very well from what I hear. The station manager said though with the runway closure they've been taking about 10-12 denied boardings because of weight restrictions. The work should be done in the next day or so from what I hear...though the airport keeps delaying it.

I know our baggage office has been getting B6 customers looking for their bags....and lots of them! Seems they are having issues with that too! lol Their staff is only there for a few hours each day so their customers come and harass everyone else.  Smile

You'd think that at midnight when the temp is now < 65 F, they could make it. I love how cool it is now during the day. Would not trade it at all. I also can't wait to see the resurfaced runway.

Yes I would have thought so too...but I guess not.

I'm loving the weather now too. I am so miserable in the summer here....now it's perfect!

Actually, JFK is a rather undelayed airport at most times of the day, which is one of the main reasons B6 chose it.

The reason it does not make sense (in my opinion) is because Tucson is a new city with very little brand awareness of JetBlue. View my argument above.

I am happy to see the flight doing well. CO had difficulty maintaining its EWR flight a few years back.

Yes the yields were pretty horrible...but we just heard CO is bringing the EWR flight back not only for the holiday...but permanently to compete with B6. They are supposed to run it during the day for about a month 1/2 then back to the red eye. My manager thinks the day flight will do very well...I guess they are seeing if they can skim some pax off of B6 that don't like flying red-eyes...have to see!

Depending on the amount of business/corporate travel in the market (TUS-NYC), there is a lot to be said for a daylight e/b flight (departing AZ in the morning.) Of course CO will also have the European connex to tie in with as well.

B6 seems to do very well with the red-eye scheduling (from the West) but they are not likely to get many business travelers with that timing and I don't think they expect to.

I think if both cx are patient and keep adjusting flight times, they could both succeed in the market.

The thing is, the drawing end of the route, particularly for business travellers, is New York, not Tucson.

why would people in tucson not know what jetblue is? i would think the brand awareness has no role in the performance of the flight. before they started flights here to phoenix i still knew what jetblue was. but not because im an aviation fan but because its on the news and its not just another airline but a unique airline.
