LAX Upgrades In Progress -- Any Updates?

Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:06 am

A lot is going on at LAX right now.

25L is closed and being demolished. Looks like they were starting on the east end and working west. Anyone know when the demolition will be done and when they will start grading for the new runway?

The TBIT lounges are closed. I've heard there is a "temporary" lounge for ALL airlines. Anyone been there? Is it a dump? The press release states it can handle 133 people. It must be full before the big Asian departure rushes (midday for NRT and late evening for NRT and other Asian desitnations)! The plan is to have 4 new lounges. One for *A, one for 1World, and one for SkyTeam, and the last one for "others." Maybe the new lounges will actually have bathrooms in the lounges!

Gate 102 has been converted to an A380 gate. Is this done? Has it been tested? How many jetbridges?

I also read that gate 3A is going to be decommisioned for clearance issues between gates 1 and 3. The allready overcrowded Terminal 1 (WN and US/HP) will probably become even more of a nightmare. (The new security screening is an improvement.)

Anyone in the know have any inside information?

I have heard project is slightly ahead of schedule. Runway work is now likely planned to be complete in January, with associated taxiways by March '07 which will allow the re-opening of 25L ontime and the start of the center taxiway construction.

There are actually two temporary lounges that opened last week.
One a first class lounge facility in the Mezzanine level of TBIT and second a Business class lounge located at the AA hangar facilities which are reached by bus operations.
As you stated there eventually will be 4 large lounges, one for each alliance plus a "SUL" Shared User Lounge.

Both gates 101 and 102 are becoming redesignated gates as 101/101A and 102/102A to accommodate the A380. In addition work continues on 6 of the remote gates to make them A380 ready. (206/207/210/212/214/216)

I also read that gate 3A is going to be decommissioned for clearance issues between gates 1 and 3.

Due SWA's increased use of winglet 737s wingtip clearance issues have forced the carrier to stagger winglet and non winglet aircraft. Its been determined its easier for the carrier to decommission 3A completely to avoid the need to stagger aircraft types. As part of the project gate 1 will also get a replacement jetway and most other SWA gates will get re stripped.
Due lack of gates SWA has had its LAX schedule remain stagnant with about 110 daily operations now for several years now. Will be interesting to see how they manage with one less gate, or if the ability to park any 737 on all the gates will actually help with the carriers efficiency from before.

Thanks for the update! I guess this also means that there will be NO increase in US/HP operations out of LAX anytime soon. I seem to recall HP having some Mexico flights from LAX and a BOS and JFK/EWR flight a few years ago. Are these still running?

Re: WN. Anyone know if they are upset with their LAX situation. I'm sure they would want a good deal of frequency to new destinations to remain competative with the majors (specifically, DEN and Midway -- isn't WN's freqencies to DEN only 1 or 2 a day, with 3x Midway?)

It's cramped in T1, but WN's location there actually is quite benficial from a taxi/departure perspective. They are right at the threshold of 24L/R, which obviously makes it quite easy to get in and out. I'm sure they are hoping US decides to co-locate with UA over in T6/7/8. I'm not sure that will happen, however.

All those experiment flights failed and we're dropped.

Unlikely at the moment. US/HP have just recently begun a 6 month remodel of their non public facilities as they consolidate. They are building new bagroom, ramp and maintenance office facilities, plus new admin offices located above the ticket counters.

Originally they had problems fitting the 700's at all into the odd gates at T1 due to space restrictions. They made some fixes to 13, which allowed them to shift all of the odd gates down a little. Even still, only the even gates and 13 in T1 were able to handle wingletted 737's at first.

Runway 25L is supposed to open on March 31, 2007 right now. Wait for the April Fool's jokes. Big grin
What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.

Every time we taxi to the 25s, I see a lot of hangar space next to Century Blvd and wonder if with some reorganization, a new terminal can't be built there instead. WN could be moved to this facility, freeing up gates in 1/3 for everyone else. It would be like LAX Jr. for WN, with their own entry exit point for traffic, and still close to the end of the runway for simple departures.

In the meantime, it's actually great to spot from In-N-Out now, because a lot of planes that usually use 25L on landing are using 24R. (just a tip for those that like burgers and spotting).

Several of the "master plans" envision moving the terminals west (away from Century). (At and west of current TBIT.) Most plans envision less terminals on the south side.

In T3, they ripped out all the payphones and removed the kiosk for the Southern California Regional Transportation District (which became the Metropolitan Transit Authority back ca. 1990). The restrooms, however, are in desparate need of updating.
