Why Is Qantas In Lima Now?

Thu Oct 19, 2006 1:11 am

I have seen a QF 744 in Lima for over 3 days now. Does anybody know why they are here? Perhaps someone from inside QF can give some ideas. My only thoughts were some sports/government or similar events. I also thought about a mechanical problem on their flight from South America to Australia and thought this could be why. Any ideas?

their flight from South America to Australia

It is LA who flies from SCL to SYD via AKL, not QF.

Maybe, as you say, it is because of some sort of sporting event. I hope someone can snap some pics.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

And the SYD-LAX flights don't come anywhere close to LIM so mechanical problem doesn't make sense.

Could it be a political/government/diplomatic mission? Does the Aussie government use QF like the Brits use BA?

Humanitarian mission? Food or medical supplies?

Could it be another www.captainschoice.com.au charter tour?

Although their website doesnt specify that the south american tour leaving Australia on 06Oct is not a QF charter journey the tour does pass through Lima on 19/20 Oct.

The Qantas 747 is indeed a Captain's Choice charter tour. The group is visiting Cuzco from Oct. 16 till the 20th. The plane stays in Lima while they take smaller domestic flights to Cuzco.

I would love to see the 744 try and land in Cuzco?  Smile

Thanks for the replies. Getting decent photos are almost impossible in LIM unless you are flying out on a domestic flight and can take some pics of the plane you are flying on without being caught. I say domestic because they have no jetways there otherwise the photos are through the cabin windows and are not very good. If a tour was available there are easily almost 100 planes just being reclaimed by mother nature.

May be they will discover a huge secret ancient runway in the future
And, you will be surprised by the amount of people who have no idea of Cuzco

There really are ancient runways not too far from Cusco, but they have a name and that is Nazca.

That sounds expensive, having a 744 sitting on the runway for several days... and did they charter the WHOLE plane? Surely most tour groups are 30-40 maximum. Are QF's 767s ETOPS capable?

Mind you, there aren't many flights across the south pacific from Aus or NZ, so perhaps the LA flight isn't convenient or available?

There original 763's are 180m ETOPS not sure about the Ex BA 763's with rarely see International ops. IIRC Captains choice has used a QF 763 in the past.

The 763 would seem a better size (unless they plan on taking a group of 350 people around Machu Pichu!)

Last time I was there, there were jetways for domestic. The planes park away from the jetways when not flying or overnight, but I believe they use jetways for domestic now. However, there certainly aren't ENOUGH jetways for all planes yet. That's in the near future.

Yes! Probably the same 747-300 (not 744), registration VH-EBT " City of Wagga Wagga" . The plane arrived on friday night and departed monday morning. It come from MAO and departed to IGU.

Also at GIG:
